Sunrise took /a/ on a magical ride.

It's impossible to describe, you just had to be on /a/ while it was happening.

If you were lucky enough to be on here in 2011 when Penguindrum was airing, it was a little bit like that. The combination of insane characters, ridiculous plot twists and old /a/ still making OC all just whipped the entire board into a frenzy that has never really been seen since. I don't even think another show like that could ever come around in the same way -- Code Geass was something literally everyone on /a/ was watching.

Mayoiga did not have OC the way pre-2011 shows did. When I compare my image folders from the series I watched when I first went on 4chan to the most recent ones, there's a large decline in OC. The summer of geass was definitely the high point of /a/. This was back when "memes" were just jokes, /a/ was still elitist pricks, people still watched anime, and 4chan wasn't too overpopulated with normies.
Every sunday the whole board would shit themselves over sunrise's batshit twists. People would make tons of OC for all sorts of stuff every single episode, and it always more than just one thing. moot was less of a faggot and would play along with us. Plus this is before simulcasting was a thing so there was fansub drama and /gg/ trollsubs to add to the fun. It was the wild ride that kept going.

Back when watching streaming anime meant a 320x200 artifacted justin.tv player on NARUTOanimelife.com and VLC threads were a thing. It's impossible to get noticed anymore without putting in way too much effort, thanks to native catalog view and the greatly increased board speed, so most people just don't bother. The catalog view is especially bad, since it means that posts rarely reach people who weren't already actively browsing that thread. /a/ probably has thousands upon thousands of people lurking and posting each day, but you can only count on a couple hundred, at most, seeing any given post, no matter the quality. It's disheartening and demotivating to feel like you're a singular piece of flotsam adrift in an ocean of information.

While people weren't exactly mad about it, Naruto the Last and the whole Hinata wins revelations blew up the board, for days on end. And just when it looked like it was abating, Boruto revelations became fresh kindling.

Also, earlier during Pokemon XY, I remember pretty much all boards sort of blowing up when they heard Ash finally beat a Lucario, a Mega Lucario at that. While there were rarely any meltdowns, it was neat it happened quite a few times, and I recall it was a sort of meltdown in the run up to their 'date'. The last of that of course when Ash was defeated in the finals of the League, since so many people had hoped he may actually do it. But it did make for entertaining threads everywhere.

I remember the time when I thought /a/ could still be saved and there's still hope.
How wrong I was, nowadays I feel like I don't even belong here, which is probably true since newfags now take up the majority of the board while oldfags are the minority, the collective of stubborn fools who refused to see that /a/ is not their turf anymore, that this is no longer the special place they called home on Internet.
I stopped lamenting aver /a/ a year ago but sometimes it feels really painful. Also the fact that day by day happy memories of this place is slipping off of my mind really worry me.

The Oreimo shitstorm is overblown here because it was just the fanbase being really fucking vocal and autistic, throwing a fit everywhere. All sides were extremely easy to bait and it brought out some horrible tripfag cancer. Because of this, even more people jumped on the bandwagon when they didn't even care for the show one bit.

It was a horrible time for people who didn't give two fucks about your awful incest harem, especially when we already Yosuga no Sora which was miles better.

Kill la Kill was also overblown and pretty forced by the "hype train" crowd, pushing for it to be the next big thing on here.

Each time I see this kind of threads, I'm sad I never got to experience this kind of fun, but I'm also sad for you gramps. Just recently we had something that could have POTENTIALLY started an actual shitstorm (Re:Zero) and, while the reactions during episode 13 were great, a big part of it was some obvious haters pretending to participate just to have people hate the series because "hurrrr cancer".
Nowadays, EVERYTHING gets called "cancer", the word itself is questioning its identity and I sometimes find myself wanting to check the definition, just to reassure myself.
The board isn't fun. People shit on one another for petty reasons. The only part where it's fun is watching anime streaming together (Charlotte episode 7 was a fucking blast with you fags)
Otherwise it's just the remains of an apparently destroyed board culture that cannot hold themselves together and therefore keep fighting one another.
At least, that's what it looks like to me.
