I don't think Pokémon is any good considering all Pokémon names and their moves are made-up pun names. Only few of those games have Kanji also, and because of most of us were/are used to play those games (i.e. quickly advancing through the game), it'd end up being too slow and frustrating to read all the dumb shits trainers have to say before you get to battle them.

If you're just mad about all the irregular Kanji readings your first couple of thousand words, you should realize that things get more regular and predictable the more your vocabulary grows. A good chunk of the language consists of straightforward onyomi+onyomi content words that double as verbs if you stick on suru.

>In the days of his youth, a sharp-tongued colleague of mine once had a serious falling-out with his Japanese employer over "the" and "a." He was working in Japan as a translator at the time, and his boss suggested that they were paying him too much because English was so full of these useless litelle definite and indefinite articles. Since he was being paid by the word, the employer suggested they ought to omit all the the's and a's from the word count. The prospect of a pay cut did not set will with my colleague, who somewhat impetuously replied, "Better yet, you do the translations, and you can pay me to put in the the's and a's." For this impolitic thrust at one of the most insecure areas of Japanese knowledge of English, he was fired on the spot.

The translator is a loser. If he really knew his shit he would write a few Japanese sentences that demonstrate similar problems/ambiguities, to give his boss a taste of what he was requesting.

If it didn't dissuade him, I'd ask to remove my name from the credits and put my boss' instead.

And then probably start sending some anonymous feedback on how shitty the new translator is.

>I and a few other american scholars were at a party and one of us tried to compliment our Japanese host by saying, "Konban wa oishii mono ga takusan arimasu ne." By this he intended to say, "What a lot of tasty dishes you're serving us tonight." The host laughed and remarked, "You mean I'm usually stingy on other nights?" By putting "wa" after "tonight," my colleague had in effect said, "Tonight, for a change, you're serving us a lot of tasty dishes." To be fair, the related vocabulary seems to be right. I'd assume they chose "a period of time" because it's impossible to fit every definition in just a couple words.

Still, I think they could've chosen a more general keyword like "interval" or even "lapse"

I don't see how line 1 connects with the other two because of ながら into それは, and I guess what line 2 and 3 really mean. I'm guessing the とする isn't the usual "try to" here, maybe "as if"?

I'm beginning to learn now and quick question. Will the characters -a section, for example, always be for -a? like, would the character for 'n' only be for a or can it be used on i,u,e or o?
>>
>>149532863
ん is only the n-sound. It's just placed there for convenience, pretty much. It's also the only one placed like that, all others are followed by the vowel-sounds of their row.

ん is it's own character. It's a stand alone. Just ignore the roll it's at. It has now particular relation to -a characters whatsoever.

http://inishie-dungeon.com/

>>149538488
No, taking classes is retarded. Even if you do only 1 hour of Anki as your routine every day, as long as you finish tae kim and read on the side you'll be far ahead of people who take classes.

Tutoring can be quite expensive too, and honestly isn't worth the investment. Redditors will be quick to disagree, though. :^)
>>
>>149538488
>classes
Memes aside, in this day and age you can learn pretty much anything they teach in college/uni by yourself with help from the internet.
>>
>>149537654
Don't buy physical books as a beginner. You'll be looking at your phone every five seconds.

I suggest that if you have <2000 vocab, work on getting it to 6k while reading manga assisted (using OCR programs) or VNs with a text hooker. Otherwise if you really have to use physical media, get some really easy manga.

>J>J dictionary

Be familiar with at least 2.5k kanji. Just recognising them, not having to write them out. J>J isn't really beneficial below advanced though, so you can use J>E for a long time without needing to switch.

>kindle

Check out the CoR for the 2GB LN dump. Not all of them are LNs, some of the ebooks there are literature/foreign (western) classics. No LN or book is really going to be easy for you if you're a beginner, so I suggest that you read some manga or NHK easy first. Refer to the Reading List if you're stumped as to what's a good beginner manga.
>>
>>149538546
That being said, having someone to ask questions makes a HUGE difference.

No, /djt/ does not count as having someone to ask questions. Unless you are a masochist maybe.
>>
>>149538521
>Tutoring can be quite expensive too, and honestly isn't worth the investment. Redditors will be quick to disagree, though. :^)

I agree with you but I think paying the "community tutors" on italki can be worth it. It's just conversation where the other person is paid to try to keep the conversation in japanese instead of switching to English, whereas if you learn them on a language learning site it can be hard to get them to speak their native language unless you are already near fluent. Of course your main learning still comes from solo study, but it's kinda nice just to build confidence in speaking and to get pronunciation corrections.

If there's anything this thread should teach you it's that "living in japan" is, although useful, extremely overrated and some amount of focuses study can be extremely useful.

>Just read out the lines in VNs out loud :^)
The point is to get confidence to speak despite knowing some thing you say will be wrong. It's not just confidence in pronouncing things. Sure you could just watch anime until you can understand Japanese perfectly and then try to learn to speak but most people will want to talk to a Japanese person before studying for 3 years.

>watch more anime
Unless you want to sound like an anime girl you're better off watching drama for pronunciation. Shadowing that could definitely replace talking to people to the most part. But there's still some things you'll just never know you're doing wrong if nobody points it out.

No, but the azw3 dump in the CoR has a decent collection of Morimi's more famous books. 太陽の塔 is more unpolished as it's one of his earlier works that reads more like a recounting of his own college life, which is why it's not as popular as the rest. I do have a MAL, but MAL doesn't tell me in which order I read them. I just thought having the historic would be nice. My MAL also has a bunch of things I had read in English back then so it's kind of a mess. I do plan on re-read them all in Japanese though.

Is Japanese concept of verb different from my concept of verb? Here an action doesn't exist by itself, it's always a state of someone, so the verb of sentence is inflected in accordance to what the subject is. But do Japanese treat action as an independent entity? If that is correct, would the correct way to translate Japanese speech be to make it looke like something Frankenstein's monster would say?

How much time did you waste not learning Japanese?

I wish I had gotten serious earlier, maybe I could've gone for a session of 留学.
>>
>>149547174
So much. My biggest regret in life is that I wanted to learn Japanese when I was 12, but I didn't because there weren't any classes or tutors in my town and I didn't think it was possible to learn a language purely through self-study. If I had started then, I'd probably be fluent by now. Oh well.

I can't be bothered tbqh

>that's some godlike taste right there.

>>149543583
1. You can read anything as long as you have a dictionary

2. I was almost 70% or so done with core6k and mined something like 2k words when I first started reading monogatari

3. I dropped monogatari because it's not something you can read without reading other books first because it relies on referential humour. Sure you can read it literally but it loses all the magic.

4. I'd already watched the anime dozens of times by that point so reading haruhi wasn't that hard. It's more difficult to read something without context at all as a beginner

5. Don't underestimate SoL manga, I still had to look up some words when I was reading NNB today.

6. I also omitted the thousands of hmanga/doujins I've fapped to
>>
Accordind to my experience you need to know 20000 word families to feel comfortable reading English text. Is amount the same for Japanese? If it it is, I might as well drop it now, it took twenty fucking years to perfect my English and I ain't doing that again.
>>
>>149547702
It's higher. About 30k.
>>
>>149547702
>If it it is, I might as well drop it now, it took twenty fucking years to perfect my English and I ain't doing that again.
Learning a second language is completely different from learning your native language.
>>
>>149547702
It's even easier dude, you just need to know 2500-3000 kanji.
>>
>>149547742
I am Russian, though.
>>
>>149547702
>it took twenty fucking years to perfect my English
How? It's literally and figuratively the easiest language on Earth.
>>
>>149547702
Learning via anki might feel really slow to you now as a beginner, but once you start recognising the kanji the process becomes a lot smoother. This should happen somewhere around the 3k-5k words done in the 6k deck. You'll be able to intuitively guess the meaning of words that you see as long as you're familiar with the kanji in them. For example:

百鬼夜行

You deduce that the first two kanji mean "lots of monsters". Third is self-explanatory. Finally the last one should mean "going around". Put it all together and you can guess that it means "lots of monsters roaming around at night". Sounds easy, right?

When you reach the point where you're able to comfortably understand words like this, you'll be able to drop anki and it's smooth sailing from there. Most people do this around 6000-10000 words seen in anki, sometimes less when they've done RTK.

>>149547370
Readings are overrated, I'd suggest not wasting your time on them

>>149547851
Probably didn't read/tried to learn it from a chink cartoon imageboard
>>
>>149547702
If your first language is a European language, then yes, you should probably give up. English is very easy to learn. The only difficulty is the seemingly arbitrary pronunciation.
>>
>>149547748
>just need to know 2500-3000 kanji
You still need to know at least some thousands words in order to speak at a very basic level, probably 20k words are still needed for a reasonably good understanding
>>
>>149547930
or if you only want to read you can go full chinese and just read tae kim/dojg a few times and just guess everything else from the kanji
>>
>>149547904
>Readings are overrated
Well you sure don't need to learn 新妻 because it doesn't sound like you'll ever see one
>>
>>149547977
hahaha that's pretty poorly understanding imho

>>149547851

Means gaining a ton (in weight) early in the year. The Japanese believe that a fat baby is a healthy baby so they fatten them until they weigh a ton (in the old measuring system which is equivalent to ~9 kg)
