I'm pretty sure people like it because it uses very basic storytelling and BL cliches but avoid rolling with them. Most stuff you would expect from a manga with exactly the same setting and type of characters is absent, for example you never had the extroverted side of the couple force anything sexual on the introverted one because "I can't take it anymore". It never turns overly dramatic or drags the drama far too.

Even at the very end of the manga is Hikaru going to see their school because it was gonna be turned into a mixed school and old classmates were reuniting for an event there and the teacher told them that stories like theirs don't happen in mixed schools (the "happens in all boys schools because they are horny and desperate not because they are actually gay") and Hikaru told him he was full of shit.

I also appreciate that Nakamura doesn't write men and boys like someone who has never talked to men and boys. 99% percent of BL manga has cringy dialogue because apparently men only talk about women and sex with women and having the introverted feels he has to compete with women.
