Digibro here: to make a long story short - don't watch this, it's barely above Asterisk War.
Use your time rewatching K-on instead.

Even though Subaru goes through a lot of crazy and traumatizing shit, and is generally portrayed as a bit of an idiot, it isn't enough to balance out the aspect of the show that feels like it's full on daydreamy wish fulfillment. This isn't very different from what I used to think about in class when I wasn't paying attention in junior high and so it seems tacky. This ties into how it also uses a lot of western fantasy tropes, which seem a bit too familiar to me, like oh hmm never seen this before rolleye sort of reactions

But it's still not bad! At least it knows what it wants to be and goes for it

I'd be reluctant to give it a 10 given it's part of an ongoing story even if the anime never adapts any more of it, but I'd probably give it a 9.5. Sure there are some plot flaws but I think the final episodes title card summed up the series perfectly and judging the series primarily off of the story they wanted to tell (Subaru x Emilia) it was pretty perfect.

Long version: Re:Zero is the textbook definition of a masterpiece. It seemingly came out of nowhere, looking and feeling like nothing that came out before or since, and will most certainly inspire decades of anime to come.

I've completed just over 130 titles, but half of them are comedies of some sort. That's all sort of irrelevant though, ultimately my rating is my opinion of the show and I'm certainly not claiming that it's an objective masterpiece or that everyone should see it just that that's how I felt about it myself.

People tell you (not you specifically) that those shows are bad and you agree because you haven't watched enough anime to be able to make an accurate evaluation (and the aforementioned people probably haven't either) but you want to be critical to show good taste. Rare case of pacing being neither too slow nor too fast and the plot being interesting enough to keep watching
Wish it had better written characters though, mitsubisi was just outright unrelatable, esp his near instant emotional attachment forming(like falling in love with elf in one day of inshow time, falling in love with onis again durning in 1-2 inshow days despite them killing him and so on)

I would highly recommend it to anyone who has seen plenty of vanilla isekai yet usually likes a touch of realism in their entertainment.

Subaru is human and makes very human mistakes. He's in a game on insane difficulty where he has infinite tries but completing a level under the wrong conditions can have drastic consequences, and losing the will to cherish his own life as well can have extremely drastic consequences.

It's an extremely well thought out series and the animated adaption is clean and impactful. Probably my favorite anime of the last five years.

It does mean something, Subaru starts extremely simplistically and all those events flesh him out and he starts to feel like an actual character.
He begins to take things more things seriously, reflect on his experience, understand the weight of his action as the scope of the story grows, doubt himself and find a more meaningful resolve.

Yeah, to be honest this is what I thought too, and episodes 13-18 were the best ride I've had in an anime in a long time. The payoff was really disappointing though and the fight with the white whale, although pretty interesting from a conceptual standpoint, was done really poorly and looked really awkward half of the time.

Plus you never get to see Subaru struggle to get this shit together after his talk with Rem in episode 18. He makes a little comment about how it's "harder to do the whole hero thing than he thought it'd be" (paraphrasing) and then goes back to being great at it like it's nothing.

I think overall my biggest issue with the show is that most of the things I like about Re:Zero as a whole were taken out of the show. The spoilers are really what made the series exciting for me after episode 15 and half of that shit wasn't even delivered on. I think I'll probably pick it up and read it at some point, or if the manga gets continued I'll read that--especially since Subaru is much more likeable when you can't hear his voice.

I don't think I could be excited for another anime, though.
