>Why aren't you tutoring people with their English in exchange with them tutoring you with Japanese?
Tutoring someone with something is not the same as helping someone with something. I could tutor you with, or using, an English textbook.
>Why aren't you tutoring people in English in exchange for them tutoring you in Japanese?
Would be the correct way to write this, although the double use of "in" is slightly awkward.

>I agree. But best way to learn language is actually to use it with natives. They can still point out obvious mistakes.
The only major issue here is a lack of "the" before "best way", and "actually to" should be "to actually". But the second 2 sentences are a little awkward, it'd be better to condense them like this:
>But the best way to learn language is to actually use it with natives, given they can point out obvious mistakes.
Or, if you wanted to keep the meaning of "still", you could just add ", after all." to the end of the original post to make it clear that it's an addendum to the previous sentence.

Did anyone else here develop an inexplicable feeling of disgust towards anything of Chinese or Korean origin shortly after starting to learn Japanese?
>>
>>149384261
Not him but let me try to figure out what kind of problem he has with it.

"When I'll be X" is syntactically correct, so any problem he has with it has to be pragmatic or fluency-based.

One thing that ESLs from certain countries do is avoid the passives and pasts in non-declarative statements, such as "If the cereal is eaten too quickly". Instead, they might write "If the cereal is being eaten too quickly" or "If someone eats the cereal too quickly". "To be surrounded" is inherently a passive phrase, so they stranglehold it by shoving in an active participle. This might be what anon thinks you were doing.

A second thing is that the continuous mood in conditional phrases is sometimes relegated to express simultaneous condition, such as "if I'm running late, start dinner without me" or "don't bother me when I'm working". However, this is a soft restraint, and is only sort of reliable in situations where the speaker is talking about a condition that applies during an enduring state, not at its beginning or end as simple non-continuous conditions might.

I have an impaired memory. I have an extremely hard time remembering new words, even if I see them on a regular basis for several days. Sometimes I feel like I would have an easier time if I had a set event to "bind" new words to. However, anything I think of, such as rituals, schedules, or mnemonics, falls apart and becomes dull after the first few words. I've tried cycling them, but then that cycle itself becomes the dull ritual. Even doing them randomly doesn't help. I'm considering self-harm as a regular ritual to bind new words to, because it should never become dull, but I still live with my family, and self-harm is considered very culturally unacceptable. Does anyone here have a history with self-harm and how it affected your day-to-day memory?

You can think of the つく in 見わけがつきません similar to how in functions in 気がつく. The concept of "to be attached", as you put it, can provide different shades of meaning in terms of what exactly is being "attached". It is a highly contextual verb.

"answer to" is usually a phrasal verb meaning something similar to be accountable to someone, have to justify yourself, or to indicate that someone responds to particular things ("I answer to the name David.")

O Don't respond to him.
O Don't answer him. (only when "he" asked a question or expressed confusion, and the response is an answer to it)

I've used it and it's absolutely great for beginners (because you can pick things up quicker). I've been learning Japanese for quite some time and I'm going to Japan in late December too! Good luck!

You do realise they're just idiots who have some time on their hands? Aside from the few high functioning sperglords who can somehow master a language by reading through a dictionary once, the vast majority of self-proclaimed polyglots are just very stupid people who want to appear intelligent not through broadening their understanding of the world, but by "learning" lots of languages because saying you're fluent in 5 languages impresses very stupid people who think that language learning is difficult in any way, when in reality it's just time consuming.

If brute force memorization doesn't work for you, use mnemonics. Better yet, do KKLC (it's in the COR) and in 2-4 months (it took me 1.5 but I'm a NEET) you'll acquire vocab at twice your previous rate by simply tying the word meanings to the Kanji component keywords.
>>
>>149397322
KKLC teaches you 2300, gives you explicit stroke order for *every single character*, forces you to get exposed to vocabulary and readings even if you don't memorize them, and is designed in a way that funnels you into reading instead of allowing you to use the same kanji book for 10+ years.

WaniKani is unironically better than all of these for learning the kanji (ignoring handwriting). On top of teaching you the most common meanings and both on'yomi and kun'yomi readings, you also get further practice by exclusively learning vocab that incorporates what you know. Use the Anki deck if you're going to do individual kanji study at all.

Yes, my long term memory is fine. But it's not once or twice in the two minute stage. At the end of a day's Anki when there's review 30 cards left, that stage takes more than 30 minutes because I can't get those cards into my short term memory at all. The end result is that I can learn words, but it requires 3 hour Anki sessions a day which has prevented me from making any progress in Tae Kim or reading anything else.

>13 levels of WK, took nearly 6 months and only learned ~30 new kanji
>Picked up KKLC, 1 week later reviewed 300 kanji and learned 40 new
I'm sure it works for some people (maybe very early beginners), but it's way too slow. The reps take too long, are too strictly spaced, and if you get just a couple kanji/radicals wrong it can delay your leveling by nearly a week.
>>
>>149397855
Yeah, just do the reviews so as to not let your previous efforts go to waste, and go through KKLC instead, then pick things up right where you left them. You'll be amazed at how much easier this will have become.
>>
>>149398404

>>149398404
it's almost as if they're deliberately trying to slow down your progress and make as much money as possible
>>
>>149397874
Don't listen to this memster. By far the best feature of KKLC is the order in which the Kanji are presented; it allows you to learn similar Kanji as parts of 'sets' which are linked through common mnemonic stories, which means that your learning effort is a fraction of what it would be if you were learning them apart, and that you'll never confuse similar looking Kanji with one another.

Also, memorizing vocab/readings along with the keywords is a huge waste of time. Do that through vocab, after you're through with your Kanji study.
>>
>>149398337
That seems very unlikely, considering the "ic" ending is usually reserved for adjectives. More likely "mnemonic" the noun is short for "mnemonic device" or "mnemonic construct" or something
>>
>>149398686
the -ic is an artefact from its transfer from greek through other languages
>>
>>149397855
>>149398431
Also, do make sure add all the Kanji you learn each day to a deck of recognition cards (Kanji in front, keywords on the back).

If you use the pre-made one (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/779483253), be sure to double check each entry as it contains quite a few errors.

Good look.
>>
>>149398871
>recognition
Why? Recall is much more effective.
>>
>>149398898
For kanji as a gateway to vocab, you don't want effective, you want easy. You want retention to be high even if savings is slightly lower as a result.

>>149398404

it already hides things you're not "ready" for without the level system; the level system is just an extra gate on top of that

Oh, you mean like every other similar major kanji resource out there?

WK does it better, and you learn the readings and vocab using the kanji in the process. If you're not going to actually *learn* the kanji during individual kanji study, then just use the objectively superior RTK Koohii community mnemonics keyword recognition deck.

I like having the example sentence hidden inside the hint field on the front of the card.

Might be a placebo, but having a 'second chance' as such at getting the answer right is kinda nice. The card will still be failed, but moral remains high.

So I'm trying to figure out why when you add ろくつ together with 四 and tsu it becomes something different. Also 四 yon is four? I thought shi was four. O_O I'm so confused by why adding tsu to a number changes it to like itsuu..etc
>>
>>149399298
There's not such thing as ろくつ and itsuu, you mean 四つ (よつ) and 六つ (むつ).

That つ does have a specific meaning to itself, but it doesn't seem like you're past your first day of studies, so you don't have to worry about it.

Or am I just gulping down a pasta bait?
>>
>>149399276
>>149399154

>>
>>1493994
>四つ (よつ) and 六つ (むつ)
六つ (むつ) and 五つ (いつつ), I mean.
>>
>>149399458
no it should only be used as a supplement to any other memorization you might do, and not at the same time / in the same deck
>>
>>149399043
If you're unable to retain 90% of the 30 - 40-ish kanji per level after around 4 - 5 days of SRS, then you're clearly not ready to move on. Each level is optimized to require knowledge of the previous kanji for ease of memorization. WK is a tool used for actual learning, not an illusion of progress. I bet you give yourself a pass in Anki at least 20 times per session.
>>
>>149399432
Yeah, I'm fairly new. At one point I was memorizing all of the kana and then I forgot like 4-5 months ago. Just coming back, what meaning does つ have on its own?
>>
>>149399458
Shouldn't really be used at all.

After a while you'll be able to rattle off the example sentence on auto-pilot and have no thought about what the actual word is/means.
>>
>>149399089
>WK does it better, and you learn the readings and vocab using the kanji in the process.
KKLC also has vocab and readings, I just suggest not to bother memorizing them so as to get through Kanji study as quickly as possible and move on.

By the way, KKLC has an appendix listing (by reading) all Kanji the readings of which are predictable from their components, so in addition to its superior order and keywords, it's also superior for studying the readings (should one bother to do so).
>>
>>149399491
again, the specific kanji and radicals you forget on your way to the next level wouldn't have their successors shown anyway

all the level system does is prevent people from learning things they *are* ready for, under the veil of a gamification system
>>
>>149399542

>>
>>149398761
Ah, so that's where the adjective marker "ic" comes from. Very interesting!
>>
>>149399667
Depends of what "genitive marker" marker means.
>>
>>149399738
The normal -ic marker is actually "native" to english morphology, in the sense that it's not a fossil (the morphological -ic may itself be a loan from another germanic language, I never checked). Also, the morphological -ic and the -ic in "mnemonic" are cognates. The only difference is that the history of the -ic in "mnemonic" is irregular: it passed through New Latin, where it was turned from the greek "ikos" (approximately" to the latin "icus", which has a nominal (as in subject marker) meaning. Additionally, there's no "ic" version of "icus"; the transformation happened when loaned to english, probably per association with english's own morphological -ic.

Give me the longest answer possible.

No, I don't really know what genitive marker means, I'm not versed in English grammar terminology.

For Japanese explanation of つ, you can draw the dictionary
>格助詞
>《接続》体言や形容詞の語幹に付く。〔所属・位置〕…の。…にある。▽連体修飾語を作る。

>Meanwhile, you're shilling for some commercial website. Really makes you think, huh.
Yeah, commercial. Despite the WK shills having stated that you should use the FREE Anki deck in every single post that recommends it. FREE. Shouldn't you be making dummy accounts to further shill your silly and inefficient RTK rip-off on reddit?

"Genitive" is like what の does, but "genitive" is more specific.

No, I'm not the WK guy. Also, conning avoids mentioning kodansha on his site, so I assume he's legitimately vested in as many people as possible learning foreign languages (if they want to), rather than being a money drone. Of course, I'm sure he'd prefer people buy his book rather than pirate it.

Sure you can! Well, I wouldn't, unless you can texthook it.

If they use kanji that means they almost definitely use *some* sort of normal text encoding.
