Most of those profits are from toy sales. A second season always sells less merchandise than the first. Nobody buys DVDs anymore. Their profits are entirely derived from merchandise. So financially speaking, it's always a smarter decision to just funnel whatever new ideas would have gone into season 2/3/4 into their own individual show.
You can basically count everything Koani has made for the last ten years as one anime, given liberties.

Think about this like a businessman instead of a viewer because that's how the people who actually make decisions think.
