Shueisha Establishes “Dragon Ball Room” to Expand and Optimize Content

Shueisha revealed that it had newly established a “Dragon Ball Room” on June 21st of this year. Its goal is to break down barriers between departments to expand and optimize the globally popular Dragon Ball franchise.

The announcement was made at Shueisha’s new publication planning presentation held in Tokyo on the 12th. Although the Dragon Ball Room falls under the umbrella of the rights division, its section chief Akio Iyoku also serves as editor-in-chief of V-Jump, where the Dragon Ball Super manga (the original story of which is overseen by Toriyama) is serialized. Iyoku says that, “in practical terms you can think of it as handling both the rights and editing. It’s a new experiment to have a department that only thinks about Dragon Ball.”

Akira Toriyama, the original author, commented that, “I was wanting to keep this old series alive and kicking even in the modern day with help from Shueisha’s excellent staff, so for me this team is dependable and a real godsend. It’d really be great if this way I won’t have to do anything!!!!”

Dragon Ball is a hit manga that ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995; its comics have sold over 240 million copies. The story centers on Son Goku, a boy with outstanding fighting sense, his adventures to get the Dragon Balls (which grant any wish when all seven are gathered), and his stiff competition against various rivals. A TV anime began broadcasting in 1986, and its popularity has endured even beyond the end of the original manga; Dragon Ball Super is currently airing.

There IS NO "chain of command", Toei is nothing more than an animation studio. They derive their content from what they get, which in this case happens to be Toriyama's (possibly vague) scripts. The manga getting ahead of the anime again MIGHT allow the manga's plot to exert more influence over the anime's adaptations, but it doesn't actually inhibit Toei's rights, contracts, or the way they choose to adapt the material.

I don't think Super is so bad, but if they absolutely had to put out a series as opposed to movies every couple of years, I wish they had taken some of GT's strengths into consideration.

Vegeta's progress in particular was well-kept in GT. Even little details like his wearing proper Earthling clothes rather than Saiyan armor go a long way into detailing how his character has progressed after the final battle with Kid Buu.

Vegeta admitted that Goku was number one. He continued getting stronger, but it wasn't to chase after Goku anymore. It was for himself, for his family -- you name it.

I think characterization is a big, big problem in Super. I know it takes place during the time between Kid Buu's defeat and the very end of Z, but characters have regressed or changed so much that they're recognizable in design only.

GT was a hot mess, but barring a couple of weird choices, I think it cared for the characters a bit more (even if the show was "Goku saves the day!" from start to finish.)

Gohan was still strong enough to keep his family safe despite living his dream of becoming a scholar. Vegeta acclimated to life on Earth and became his own man. Trunks wasn't all that great, but he had some good moments. Goten at the very least had a character. Piccolo's arc (if you can call it that) didn't make much sense, but it led to a very touching moment made weaker only by a poor lead-up.

I don't know. There was a lot of bad in GT, but the essence of some of those good bits is essential for any DB followup in my opinion.

Above all else, I would have just preferred a movie every two years or something. Though Resurrection F wasn't that great if I'm totally honest.

that's the thing, it's not going to be Toyotaro's manga anymore, they're going to establish a source manuscript "plot outlines" that both mediums will adhere to in the Room. This is how they will influence Toei in quality control. Manga to get the authentic purist experience of reading the source material.
Kai is nice for removing filler and heavily enjoyed the return of Dragon Ball.
DBS is in an akward spot atm which feels very watered down in comparison to what it used to be but I still enjoy it for what it is.
