Because it either feels like a time waster within an anime or its the only thing driving an anime. Normalfags would care more about drama and scheme planning in Code Geass than too many mecha battles so some of the mecha screentime feels like wasted screentime. Secondly, if an anime doesn't have any worthwhile appeal outside of Mecha shit, it feels really mundane and bland and normies assert that Mecha is a bland genre.

Most of Gundam is not very good. If you start on release order, you'll be thrown into 43 episodes of mediocrity. And then you'll have a bad impression of mecha.
If you want something good, it's really confusing with all the timelines and different shows. It's not easy to find something that's both good, and that doesn't require 50 episodes of trash before you can see it.

When I started to get used to watching anime I was avoiding this genre. I thought it could not be interesting and that continuous robot battles would be boring. My friend was like that too.
