I find it a bit ironic that Nasu went back on his word in Kara no Kyoukai for Sakura.

Overlooking view: Killing yourself is weak, because you don't have the courage to live and make the world your enemy (in the example that Kokutou is a carrier of a virus that'd kill everyone in the city). However, he paints Sakura as being weak since she can't kill herself and prevent more deaths from happening, because she's too attached to the little happiness she found to let it go.

As for the character herself, same as Fujino. She grew to enjoy the murders, and became addicted to the violence. Sakura is an indirect mass murderer, because she's the host to the shadow which ate the town, and she is indirectly affecting it to an extent due to her bottled up grudge and hatred.

What made people dislike/hate her/her ending, is that she started enjoying the murders, like a twisted retribution against people who lived their happy lives while she suffered. She's petty (wah nobody love me so you should all die, etc...), sadistic, wants to avoid responsibility for her actions (dark sakura 'persona'). Its not fair for her that she had that shitty life so far, but its not fair either for the thousands of people that died because she can't kill herself that she got off scot free with the entire package in HF True. HF Normal, she is free of Zouken and the worms and is free to start her life anew from scratch, however without Shirou. Shirou paid for his sins with his life, sacrificing himself to destroy the Greater Grail and save the world.

Dilo is her shishou in both HF True and Hollow, Rin mentions an old man that is Kirei's replacement, and in Hollow it was said he became a father figure for Sakura. He is a bishop from the boonies of a foreign country. The best thing is that Sakura sought his tutelage herself, but it hardly ever gets mentioned. If I remember right, he helped her make that mystic code she wears (the black striped glove seen in Hollow and a seemingly improved one by Imaginary Around in GO).

In HF Normal, she just teaches herself, but ends up being the shishou for Rin's granddaughter before she passes on.

Dilo is actually a pretty important guy for Sakura, it's sad he still hasn't gotten a character design, but I hear he was in Strange Fake. Nasu needs to get on making some extra stuff for the HF movie, there is a shitton of things that True didn't get into, despite it being the longest, most informative epilogue.

It's sort of right and sort of wrong.

It's like how people take what Kirei's said out of context in the forest as the truth without first understanding a couple things. First, Kirei's has confronted Shirou about enjoying that people are on danger to satisfy his complex, something Shirou is never able to argue back about, it's the same principle as his talk with Sakura. He picks at what people are worried about with themselves.

Not to mention there are parts of the fight with Rin and her private talks with Shirou that contradict her being labeled the same as Fujino, who enjoyed taking lives. Nasu says she is a Fujino archetype, but only because he uses the same type of setting, "girl who has gifts in the supernatural is taken advantage of by corrupt society and works with a darker mindset", but they aren't the same. Sakura has bitterness, and she does have unresolved anger issues, but you have to know where to draw the line. Kohaku is also different in manner to Sakura, given Sakura is openly nihilistic, and Kohaku firmly adopts an alternate persona. The reason Medusa felt attraction to Sakura was because she tried to sincerely smile despite her problems, tried not to hate the world. That was a big takeaway one of Rider's scenes in Hollow (which should have been in HF, it would have been a nice kick in the teeth to people who say Rider is just a bland slave to Sakura).

I like how the HF manga did this part. the blank look in Illya's eyes in the second panel is really telling. She’s been raised and taught all these years that Kiritsugu was evil and never loved her, and that Shirou was the similarly pure evil child who “stole” Kiritsugu away from her. That’s why this moment is such a shake up to her, because she can't understand him sacrificing himself for Saber. It doesn’t fit what she’s been taught about him.

(That’s also why, since this moment doesn’t happen in UBW route, Illya never really seeks out Shirou there the way she does in the other two routes, because she has no reason to believe he is other then what she’s been told.)

Her face in the last panel there is great, because it conveys very well her somewhat childish frustration with finding out that things are different then what she thought they were. Tonight was supposed to be very simple for Illya. The war was officially kicked off and Shirou now had a servant (it would have been too easy, too boring to kill him before) so now she could have some fun slowly crushing them all, before taking her vengeance on shirou. Which as we see in the bad ends is pretty bloody and horrific.

And it would be really easy for Illya to just ignore Shirou’s sacrifice here, and keep going with her original plans, but she can't. She wants, has to know the truth.

Why is Rin such a pathetic useless damsel in distress character in UBW? How come she has a better character arc and is generally much more competent in H;F?
