Tried to write a story with mystery and background without ever bothering to figure out the details. This left lots of holes in the world, and meant they couldn't give an explanation for events. It's why the ending falls flat, you have no sense of what's happening, what it means, how it affects the characters, because nothing is grounded.

I'd have to agree. The mystery worked really well for most of the show, but it really made the ending lackluster. And then S2 happened.
