> Any theories behind Mon's first metting with Higumadon and the whole teddy bear he was carrying?

> I thought Mon wanted to change the world so the ending caught me off guard, I mean he talked about power ruling over everything and being absolute, yet he didn't seem to ahcieve that in the end, are there any theories behind it? Did Maria change his outlook or something?

> Was the death of Mon linked to Higumadon's death? Like did he die when Higumadon died and had everything already set up for the ending?

Yes, that's the one. It's from the author's new publisher, Enterbrain, and each volume contains twice as much content compared to the original release by Shogakukan (YS). My only problem is that the covers are complete shit compared to the original, which were very beautiful to begin with. The problem is that the original edition is out of print, hence the reprint. You could still get it second hand though.

I loved Mon's character, he was fascinating, he was a complete animal functioning on instincts and completely oblivious to human society and its customs and ways of behaving. In reality this is rather common with generic shonen protagonists like Luffy or Goku that seem borderline autistic, but of course the difference being that TWIM is a more mature manga so even though it's an extremely odd character it doesn't feel stupid.

Seeing him fuck woman as if they were mere objects for his pleasure instincts was pretty cool because as sexist as it sounds it really wasn't because he'd fuck anything regardless of looks, age, or even gender, it was just basic nature for him to fuck something.

Has anyone read any other manga with characters remotely close to Mon?
>>
>>149314752
I loved it but what exactly was Mon? Was he human? Toshi's development throughout was brilliant.
>>
>>149327808

Yeah he was human, but the supernatural aspects in the manga are just never explored, it's just what it is basically.

My theory is that Mon for whatever the reason was "chosen" by god or whatever and for who knows what, maybe for the end goal that the manga showed. The good ol' "Humans have destroyed the earth, time to cleanse humanity!" story line.

>>149328031
What hurts the most is that we're never shown or hinted, not even once that Mon gave two shits about Toshi's death. Mon really was an animal and Toshi was nothing but a tool for him.

I wasn't expecting it either but don't really mind it, after all it explains very well why he was the way he was, a wild animal. Worth noting though that just because he was completely human doesn't mean there was something more grandiose to him, he was definitely special with his whole connection with Higumadon and whatnot.

Nah dude the "creatures" at the end are supposed to be a new species of human beings if you well that evolved and developed themselves for who knows how many billions of years thanks to Mon's body that was sent to some planets before the earth was destroyed, as he intended it to be. It is shown at one point that his body is sent in some cryogenic capsule of some sort, set to land somewhere.
>>
>>149331100
Yeah, The space capsule thing makes sense considering there was a page where Mon had a bunch of wires connected to his head. Sucked how Toshi was killed but fuck it was a good read.
>>
If anyones interested heres a pretty good analysis of the story : http://tooms1954.blog55.fc2.com/blog-entry-66.html

What it says about Mon and Higumadon: Mon was a barbaric killing machine that didn't know anything. Everytime he met with Higumadon he learned something new. The first meeting with Higumadon taught him pain. The second made him remember his mother and stopped him from killing and the final meeting evolved him to something more than human. He became a God. Thus Higumadon's role was done

Damn I like that explanation, it really adds a lot to the story in my opinion. I don't remember something quite right thought, wasn't Mon's first meeting with Higumadon when he got all gloomy and stopped killing? And his second meeting in the city he was technically back to his killing habit with the exception of Maria being with them and keeping him in control, until she fucking lost it (pic related) and was unable to control him, unleashing him on the city.

The writing's harder to grasp than most other manga I've read, but I think the main thing is that the art refuses to be cute. It's honestly pretty rough going for the first 30 chapters, but once Toshi has to kill someone for the first time and that whole devastating arc with his mom, I was all-in.

Arai Hideki is fucking great. He certainly deserves more love on /a/.

I hope someone translates SCATTER his ongoing manga. Its got seven volumes already published and only the first is scanlated by Habnero scans and they said they require help for the rest. It looks very interesting.

I've been begging scanlators here to pick it up to no avail.

>>149335556
Arai's an interesting figure to me. Doesn't really garner sales, but he seems to be well-respected among his peers considering that mangaka like Hajime Isayama, Kengo Hanazawa, Aya Kanno, Mitsurou Kubo, and Kouhei Horikoshi have dropped his name here and there.
>>
>>149335733
Even Naoki Urasawa mentioned his name in Manben

it's far from the best manga ever.

It's actually very pretentious and has large sections which are not very effective.
It's pretentious and the way the storytelling devolves over the course of the manga are explained in detail here.

*pretentiousness.

Jesus Christ this is the most pretentious manga ever written.

I can't believe that a whole bunch of people from groups like mangascreener, Kotonoha, illuminati manga and gantz waiting room rave about this manga like it's a masterpiece.
It's bollucks.
The first volume is purely senseless and TWIM's supporters freely admit this. Then the next 5 volumes are readable and intruiging. But just look at what it turns into. I'm going to post some examples.

>>
The weird thing is that parts of it earlier on exhibit really good story telling. There are a couple of extremely powerful chapters.

But then the manga becomes progressively more stodgy and slow and bogged down and the author evidently just loses more and more self-awareness and writes more and more loopy, pretentious, stupid nonsense that even a 16 year old would cringe at writing.
>>
>humanity is bad for nuking a life form that was growing exponentially and would have covered the surface of the earth

How is it remotely plausible or good storytelling that a video guy standing in the woods saying "Sky, sea, rainbows, butterflies, love, the heart [etc.]" inspires a global cult revolution of people randomly committing horrific violence? detailed here >>149339185
You bought that? You expect other people reading this shit to buy that?

TWIM had some very good chapters, like the one showing the effect on Toshi's mom of his identity being reported by newspapers and the abuse she received, or the first confrontation between Mon and Higumadon, or the chapter where Toshi murders a woman tied up beneath a blanket.

But you can't defend what lazy, new-age, vague, pretentious shit it degenerated into.
It's clearly just shit.

You misunderstand, the pretentious shit is evidenced in earlier pages like >>149339073
>>149339090
>>149339109
>>149339133

Pointing out that the ending also has pages upon pages of stodgy exposition shoe-horned in that the reader has to wade through is an unrelated point.

If you think I'm wrong then you misunderstood this garbage, because that is exactly what happened.
>>
>>149339286
It's about two guys who decide to go on a killing spree.

One because he is genuinely detached from reality like an autistic savant, and the other because he is a weak edgelord full of frustration.

there is also a godzilla-like bear rampaging through japan.

the first volume is senseless and random and not very effective.
the next 4 or 5 volumes are intruiging and readable.

then it gets worse and worse after a 3rd female main character is introduced and eventually becomes a ludicrously pretentious mess.
>>
>>149339274
You can't really take away single pages out of context, especially when it comes to Mon's complex character. Here are some hints:
1) The Toshimon duo has had very charismatic appearance all throughout the story -- from the raid on the police station to the assassination website.
2) The Toshimon duo was paralleled by the appearance of Higumadon and many people made a connection between the two.
3) The Toshimon duo had managed to put the whole country on its knees, essentially, and remain completely unscathered all throughout.
4) Toshimon and their dynamics are quite extraordinaire. They were not your typical serial killers and their eccentricity, coupled with the immense charisma, contributed greatly to their popularity. All throughtout the manga, you can read about the escalation of their legend. Even the PM of Japan couldn't stop talking about them on national television.

So then, a character like Mon appears and out of no where starts to preach something. You have to understand that he has built a massive following already and hundreds of thousands of people try to understand him and connect with him. Suddenly, he reaches out and try to connect with people himself. Also, the careless reader that you are, you probably haven't noticed that the last volume spans over a long distance of time.

Last, but not least, all of your concerns are directly addressed in the manga, directly answered even, but have conveninently omitted these pages from your little fit.

In my opinion what the author was going for there was that throughout the story the childlike innocent brute(?) Mon experiences events teach him about humanity, pain, love ie how physically frail humans are and yet how even the weak like Maria are strong.

He apparently gains enlightenment and becomes god therefore he can talk like that.

I don't know anon, I don't see how it's pretentious really, I mean, it's certainly telling us a message that's rather cryptic and weird, but it's not like Arai is pushing that message onto as as a legit way of thinking or anything. All in all I found it interesting and despite how weird it is that also makes it refreshing in my eyes and quite bold.

I understand where you're coming from though, I have felt that way with other manga were I simply "don't get it", and I don't mean "get it" as if I understood the message and shit behind the manga and you don't, no, I just mean like sometimes certain manga just don't click with some people for whatever the reason, after all, it's art and art carries emotion (as pretentious as that sound) so you can't always rationalize and understand your liking behind it.
