Neither superior or inferior. There are genres of anime that are absolutely not my thing but a "get" that it's sort of like vidya in the sense that the last 10-15 years the Anime industry has slowly been chasing the market and changing themselves to do so.

Certain anime tropes and genres reinforce local cultural youth expectations for entertainment and even probably change and form local youth cultures (in Japan) - the youth or target audience/demographic then influence the tropes and genres.

I've been binging on Anime as of late after not having watched it for a very long time - I'm older and from the west. A lot of the things "I don't like" I understand is a matter of taste. - HOWEVER

There is a lot of wasted potential by production companies because I think they are sort of scared of alienating the masses. The tropes get progressively more acute and cliche while any artistic expression (especially in story structure and narrative) gets more and more suppressed and neutered.

The thing that has suffered the most over time I think is story depth and character development. It's almost like the whole thing that the Twilight series is accused of doing with Belle Bella? - whatever the female MC is. The MC of an anime needs to either be an empty vessel or a caricatured but bland trope that the audience can see themselves in - and most of the audience would rather watch an Anime than actually go out and do the things the Anime portrays - which means they tend to be hollow.
