Because it was pretty much sent out to die, with no confidence from the publisher, given to a studio with a less than stellar reputation, and a threadbare budget.

Decent direction, good source material, and a fantastic cast is basically why it ended up being a good show to watch (plus that season was kind of poor honestly). Hell, I recall a few interviews with the staff, and even they were surprised at the shows success.

I think that's part of the reason why it got a second season announced so quickly. The publisher panicked because they expected a flop, and instead got a lot of "why the fuck is this only ten episodes!" thrown at them.

And yeah, I actually like Aqua the most too (I find her and Kazuma's interactions to be the best part of the series, though I am an Erisfag). But Megumin's VA was by far the best in my opinion. Though Kazuma's was a really close second, he really nailed the scummy and "sick of your shit" attitude really well.

In this case it's good taste since it's not because they dislike her VA work (in fact people seemed to like it), but because they dislike the character she voices. The girl she voices is portrayed as a straight up Mary Sue. Other characters even call her out on it later. Nothing bad ever happens to her, unlike everyone else in the series, because a time traveling autist MC dies and rewinds times 50 times for her every time something goes wrong. So she gets a perfect outcome every time without having to lift a single finger. Yet the narration tries to act as if she's this poor unlucky girl who has bad things happen to her all the time without her deserving any of it, and she's this super nice and amazing person who helps everyone in need and is always doing the right thing and wants equality and just wants everyone to get along but she has to constantly struggle to make anything work out because everyone is being mean to her. Even though she does literally fuck all for herself (even before she met the MC) and basically has to have everyone else do everything for her because she's this amazing girl who they're obsessed with, or because they're trying to do under-the-table dealings with the MC and trying to influence him through her. 99% of the time she's only relevant because the MC is obsessed with her.
And the girl the Nips actually like is a girl who gets shit on by the world and the author at every chance, has real flaws in how autistic and clingy she is, and not just having the story try to appeal that "OMG she's super nice and amazing and she always goes out of her way to help other people even though she doesn't have to" is her flaw.
