>But i know you got the 1st one (3) right. Can you explain it to me?
I'm not sure myself, I just picked what made most sense to me.

If I had to explain then I'd say because of the sentence after the comma "and fell right back to sleep again" the ___ part has to be something that just happened right before, and only 3 fits because 1,2 and 4 are general statements and 3 describes the state of the person's eyes.

>Its because the 4th option means the speaker is more sure of himself.
I think I just interpreted that sentence wrongly.
国へ帰った could be returned to Japan or his home country for me. I'm not really sure.

Two questions:

>そんなのは、あるかよ!

In this context, is not the explanatory の, right?

>誰が盗んだのか、誰か知りませんか

Same here, what's the use for the の? Does it nominalize the whole sentence (誰が盗んだ) or is it the explantory one?

I really struggle to understand when this participle is used in the explanatory way or not.

仮にも神なので倒すことはできないが、追い払う方法はないわけではない。新潟では、大晦日の夜に囲炉裏で火を焚くと、貧乏神が熱がって逃げていくが、代わりに暖かさを喜んで福の神がやって来るとされる。囲炉裏にまつわる貧乏神の俗信は多く、愛媛県北宇和郡津島町(現・宇和島市)では囲炉裏の火をやたらと掘ると貧乏神が出るといわれる[3]。

There's pretty much no doubt he can speak japanese but his only video is from after he was living in Japan for a while, and who knows when he really started.

But it actually is possible to get quite good in a year. If you do something like spend 2 hours a day on anki and spend every other waking minute talking to tutors you'll probably get fluent pretty fast too. So it's not like it's impossible to learn a language quickly.

Sentence decks are garbage without full native audio though.

Okay, guys, I finally realized I was a moron and I'm starting to practice drawing, because I have problems remembering the stroke orders.

My first question is: do you always draw with your pen? I mean, I tried it a lot of times, but my characters always look like some abominations, being thin as hell and all. If I try to counter it by making them smaller, I can't really train my precision. Also, it feels really unnatural to imitate the sharp brush turns at the end of some strokes. Would using some kind of a brush be better than using a pen? Has anyone here tried it?

My second question is: how do I know I'm doing alright? I mean, I know I'm not gonna draw a perfect 永 at first and it's gonna look clumsy as hell. So how do I know what to look out for? I'm not gonna upload every sheet of paper and ask for guidance, I want to know if the direction I'm taking is the correct one. I'm afraid of doing something wrong and sticking to it for eternity without realizing I made a small mistake that could be really hard to unlearn later on.

Is it even possible to learn calligraphy without a knowledgeable tutor?

Don't bother with calligraphy before you can write Japanese normally. 書道 is the art of writing beautifully but to do that you need to be able to write normally first.

>>
>>149196685
I see where you're coming from. If you're just learning Japanese as a hobby and have no plan to live in Japan or find work there then you're right, there is no sense in learning to write. It's a waste of time outside of your personal preference and what you envision yourself doing with the language.

As for me, I just think of learning to write the Kanji as something that will help bolster the foundation I've already set out. That and also I won't look like an idiot if someone wants me to write something.
>>
>>149195065
> have problems remembering the stroke orders
Is there even a point to remembering them? Most of the time, stroke order is obvious isn't it? left to right, top to bottom. Just write out all the vocab that you're adding to your Anki deck once and it stroke order should become second nature.

Formal Japanese education is the biggest time waster of them all, though. You constantly see students come to DJT to bitch and moan about how their teachers are making each Genki book a year long endeavour, when most people who self-study and used Genki blazed through each book in a month or so.

Please leave and enjoy spending years on what is considered elementary Japanese. This is a place of learning, not of shilling retarded practices that do nothing but cripple progress.

There's one more use for it that I know of but it's a bit harder to explain. As far as I know, you use it to show your disbelief that something is going beyond normal. Here's the two definitions I found:

普通考えられる程度を超えていることをあらわす。

異常な性情であることを述べる場合、それがどんな点についてであるか驚きの気持ちをこめて提示する

exampels: この店のそばは、おいしいったら、天下一品だ」、「ほんとうにうるさいったらないね」、「面白いったらないんだ」、「汚いったら話にならない」

Now you can either awkwardly agree or explain to them why you're learning it and make them think you're a weeaboo.

I've only done this map 5 or so times, yet I can recall its name instantly. I think that might be because there aren't any maps that look like this one and because the boss of this area is particularly difficult, so I have strong memories associated with it. Likewise, I can remember the word 蘇生 without having studied it because it's associated with a particularly important scene in a visual novel.

I think that's really the reason (and why people use mnemonics). I should begin using them again, I stopped making them because they took a lot of time to make, but I think in the long run I was screwing myself over.

I'm ESL and would say am pro-efficient in all 3 languages I know counting Japanese (or will definitely be in Japanese by the time I have a kid if I'm not already) but I'm really not sure about that. It's a question I've asked myself quite a bit but without really finding a good answer to it.

It would really depend on where I live. If I end up living in Japanese and the kid is half I don't think I would bother teaching the kid French. I'd do my best to help them learn English properly but not from birth, I'd simply be sure they end up learning it properly by the time it matters to them (15-18y old+).

Sure the idea of raising my kid bilingual is a really appealing but more than anything I'd just want my kid to be happy and feel """normal""" around others. I wouldn't want to risk doing something that'd make my kid a loner or something. Skills are nice and all but there are more important things in life, and more important values and such I would like to teach him or her before languages. Things like art and computer skills also valuable for example (there are massive misconceptions regarding art still as of today). Still once again the goal would still for them to know English by the time they're 18 or so for sure.

I think Tae Kim's grammar was only most N5 and some N4. So learn more grammar from somewhere.

Really? I just did Tae Kim and never really came across anything I didn't know since I've started reading.

I know Tae Kim doesn't go in depth but I doubt one could say it's just "N5-N4". I feel like Tae Kim teaches a lot of things that are valuable on pretty much all levels and on which one can start learning the rest simply through reading.

Happened with me when I DIDN'T study Japanese.

The baker in my neighborhood lived for some time in the US, so every time my dad goes to the bakery, he speaks in English with the dude for practicing (or circlejerking, who knows).

So once I went with him and he told the baker: "Oh, my son also speaks English, he learned it by himself... and he also knows Japanese!".

By "he knows Japanese", of course, he meant "my son likes that annie may thing".

The baker turned to me and said: "Oh, really? Cool! What are some foods they have there?"

I was caught off-guard. I could list some Japanese food even with my weeb wapanese, but words failed me:

"I-it depends..." - I replied.
A few seconds of awkward silence, and then the dude went: "Ohh, I see..."

Why, dad?

I saw these "needle" tip pens while looking for some new pens to do my writing practice with the other day and figured I'd give them a try.

Holy shit, it's so much easier to write characters nicely with them. You get a lot more friction with the page so it's much easier to control than a rollerball/ballpoint tip which slides across the paper really easily and make it hard to do the sort of right-angle shapes that kanji are written with.

My only complaint is that you have to write quite quickly since if you hold the pen to a single place for a few seconds, a lot of ink leaks out onto the page and soaks it resulting in a big blotch.

My brain is failing me with anki. I stopped doing core months ago to start a mining deck and just do the reviews. I've reached a point where I have 1.6k mature words and just continuously recycle the last 600 as they slowly all turn into leeches.

My mining deck has words piling up within 250-300 reps a day range and I have 30-50 cards a day that I continuously have to keep hitting again on for like a half hour before I can remember them. It's getting out of hand. Japanese is a curse.

Is it just a matter of vocabulary, or is the grammar tripping you up as well?

If it's the former, just quickly scan through the text beforehand and copy all unkown vocabulary into Anki, study that for a week or so, and then proceed with the actual reading.

If it's the latter, I'd recommend you set aside a month or so to read the appropriate volume of the DOJG from cover to cover (15-20 pages a day) and note (not necessarily memorize) each grammar concept covered, so that you can at least recognize it when you encounter it in the wild. If you then still come across a lot of unknown grammar in your reading, it's time to find an easier text.

your retention won't improve until you pass 10k total words known (both inside and outside anki)

if you've already passed that point, tough luck

But don't worry, I make him very proud in general, and I'm not a NEET.

Hey /djt/ do you think it's possible to stop anki completely after a year and replace it with more reading or otherwise using the language?

Like instead of doing anki and 1hour of reading I would just read 2hours and consume raw material?

What do you think good idea or does that make me forever 出来ない?
>>
>>149212847
Of course it is possible. Anki style is just the most efficient.

If your vocab is already very good, it probably doesn't matter at all how you learn new words on demand.
>>
>>149211340

>>

>>
>>149212847
flash cards are for teaching times tables not japanese
>>
>>149212847
You could stop adding new cards, but dropping it entirely would be foolish.
>>
>>149212981
There's not really any reason to stop. When you're at an advanced level you can just not touch it for days at a time and come back to do the 100 cards that built up in 10 minutes while you're sitting on the toilet after fapping

>What kills me is when I know all the words but I can't wrap my head about what the sentence is supposed to mean.
Moreso than in other languages, you need context to disambiguate Japanese sentences and nail down their purpose within the larger text. One particularly frequent manifestation of this is elipsis (leaving out) of the clause specifying the topic of the sentence, when that is assumed to be understandable from context. Because the topic of a sentence is often also the subject, this makes it impossible to find the equivalent English sentence (because that usually requires a subject) based on the information contained in the Japanese sentence alone. So when you're stumped by something like

>ただ気分で思いのままに動いてるだけ。。。!?

where there is no explicit topic marker, just back up a little, try to identify and track topic shifts (ideally marked by は) leading up to the sentence in question, and see if it doesn't make sense after all once seen in that light.
>>
>>149212847
>Hey /djt/ do you think it's possible to stop anki completely after a year and replace it with more reading or otherwise using the language?
That's like asking if you can stop reviewing while you study and asking it if is viable. Yes, of course it is, but it means you have to put in more study than you would have if you were reviewing things on a daily, or more accurately, spaced out, basis.
If you are using Anki for vocab, for example, it just means you will have to be reading a lot more in order to be seeing those words on a consistently reliable basis.

>Like instead of doing anki and 1hour of reading I would just read 2hours and consume raw material?
Sure, it just means that it will likely take more man hours to achieve whatever comprehension you are after. If that doesn't bother you, do it. You'll find out in a few months whether or not you are content with your progression and if now you could always reintroduce Anki into your studies for a few months and see if it is worth going back to when you weren't using it.
Not the end of the world.
>>
>>149212800

You HAVE to use Expression Meaning and Reading for field names. I had the same problem until I spent a while this morning setting it up properly. You need to make a note type from scratch that uses just those, and paste the layout code you're currently using into the new note type and edit the "Vocabulary-English, Vocabulary-x" portions of the code into Expression Meaning and Reading.

Can someone teach me how to search kanji via radicals and what site is the best for that?

I tried searching several things already and always end up using google to draw cause I wasn't sure.

Like I used Jisho and looked for 荷 and I found these 苟 苛 before finding the correct one.
This takes too much time and kills the fun when it takes 5min to look something up every time.

I mean I know 荷 but the font was so weird so I wasn't sure, even more so as it doesn't make sense imo considering the context.

>>
>>149213381
Do you need to search by radical for some particular reason? If not, it's much more efficient to use https://sourceforge.net/projects/capture2text/ to get the Kanji into your clipboard and go from there.

What's to fuck up? If you stop reviewing for a few months and decide to go back to using Anki, just work your way through those reviews and after a few days or a week or so it will be back to normal.

It's not really about what it offers, it's about what works for you. I think they are shit as books and somehow he manages to have 300+ page books that in the end don't actually teach much, but as online courses it's pretty decent.

Assuming you already know kana anyway.

It's the only way anyone has successfully learned Japanese due to it's unique and clever mnemonics.

Nobody here can post a vocaroo proving otherwise.

He's a cool dude, but I don't like his approach. His audience is definitely the younger crowd, or people who would otherwise be 出来ない if not for his excessive handholding. His ask-a-teacher segments and content with native Japanese speakers definitely shows that he has a full grasp on the language, but JPFZ! is like the polar opposite of DJT's philosophies.

At least he's gotten rich off of the thing that he loves. Well, he was already loaded, making up to $12000 a month as an interpreter for medical facilities and Microsoft.
>>
>>149214293
You have access to the content of all 4 (5?) books and you can just storm through them on your own pace. The lessons are also better put together, no snail shit.

He doesn't teach all that TK does, probably like 4/5 or something, but what he does teach, I think he teaches well and for 5 bucks it's probably worth it. What is 5 bucks anyway, one icecream you won't be buying?
>>

Awful SRS, extremely useful content. If you're going to use it, get the Anki deck off of the CoR. Basically Core 6k combined with RTK, mnemonics all the way.
