What do you guys use your TVs for if you don't have a PC connected to them already? I've had a TV PC since 2004.

Cable subscriptions are silly. You could probably buy box sets of all the shows you enjoy for less then a year's subscription. There's also torrents for free and netflix isn't that expensive.

It's really nice to have a computer in the living room that you know doesn't have any restrictions or limitations in what you can do with it.

When I turn mine on it automatically mounts my music, movies, and a few other things from all my computers over ssh. It also controls all my stereo systems in and out of the house, and Steam streaming.

Why the fuck would you want to deal with the headache of bullshit software to use anything else? You don't even have to update a living room PC unless you play games directly on it or get a higher resolution TV.

I had my previous system for almost ten years until my 720 TV took a shit a month ago and I used it as an excuse to upgrade the living room.

Since I'm not a shit eater most BDs I download are raw Japanese DVD/BDMV which I store on 8TB server connected at 1000mbps Ethernet and watch on mpc-hc with madVR. I will have to add another 4-6TB soon though.

Good encodes from DVD sources are uncommon but definitely worth grabbing since there is no half decent realtime filter for deinterlacing or inverse telecine, and if they get rid of extra artifacts, it saves a lot of trouble.
Good encodes of old anime from BD sources are seemingly even rarer as even encoders are scared of high file sizes and prefer degraining and lowering grain retention settings. Most BDs of remastered old anime are 1080p with no interlacing or significant artifacts. They are usually encoded with H.264/AVC which is an efficient codec, and unlike digital anime there is usually no need to dither or downscale the image, so there is not much point downloading encodes unless you wasted all your money on PS4s and Xboxes instead of storage.

If you watch anime streamed or on a console, tablet, phone or TV box, go back to re:ddit, tumblr, twitter, 9fag, gaia or wherever the newest cool kids hangout is on the net.

It's nice to watch BDs of old cel era anime on a big TV screen in the living room on a couch. So yes, the size of the screen does matter as it makes for a nicer viewing experience, especially if you've got a nice sound system to go with. Watching stuff like wings of honneamise, patlabor movies or metropolis on the big screen is pretty sweet.

I can barely tell the difference between 300mib 720p and 150mib 480p on my 1270x800 laptop. I can't run anything above 260mib but it's not a big deal. If anything it's strange to see the lines with that much detail, it detracts from the viewing experience if you go above 720p.

FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.

The difference between FLAC and 320 is very slight. I notice it, but not all the time

However FLAC is not placebo, it has a purpose. Since FLAC isn't lossy you can make lossy copies of it without them really suffering.

If you had a 320 and needed ogg vorbis or wav copy (for whatever reason) there would be some loss. Then there would be a noticeable difference between the original and the copy.

That's the only reason you would need FLAC. Most people here don't really have that need though. I know i don't so most of my music is 320
