I can't figure out why is 間違う in て form in this sentence. Context is the kid is holding a book and he thinks one of the kanji in the cover is wrong. I assume there is some sort of contraction with that ん but I can't figure it out.

Both of these with auto import to Anki.

This. Everything is doable.
If you don't understand something just look it up or ask here.

Same goes for watching raw anime.

I don't know what people are so scared of.
>>
>>149156580
>If you don't understand something just look it up or ask here.
The problem is when you need to look stuff up 3+ times every single page, and possible have to ask in here more than once per chapter.

Asking stuff here is scary you know? You never know if people will answer you like they did here >>149155253 or call you names until you feel like shit. Then having to ask several times per chapter?

Most people would rather just study more.

I think it's something like "you changed the wording of x (a word in the previous line describing unintelligent people) to あほ making it more harsh" due to the ざんした. I have no clue where the う or the ご are coming from though. Maybe I just conveniently warped the meaning in my head to match the situation, but it's the only way I can imagine the sentence making sense.

I don't get why some anons always get triggered when they see Yotsubato being recommended. It's a simple and easy to read manga, so it's just a good way to start reading.

If you don't like it then you can just read whatever the hell you find easier and more fun, nobody's gonna force you to read Yotsubato. But if you are just going to whine because of a mere recommendation then just fuck off.

This is archaic 敬語 like 「悪い + です/でした」 in modern japanese.

ござんした is pseudo dialect. This replacement makes a joking.

How many hours a day do you think it takes to make noticeable progress? I want to study as much as I can, but when I get back from work studying for the rest of the night is honestly one of the last things on my mind.

I guess that's the wrong mindset to have?
>>
>>149174138
It depends on what you mean by "noticeable progress", but you should always try to study as much as you can manage.
>>
>>149174027
悪いございます is wrong, you true.
悪うございます sounds good. But we no longer use this normally. I'll just say 悪かったです.
>>
>>149174138
You have to study 90 seconds every minute.

Never underestimate the power of a fraction of a second.
>>
>>149174138
Actual study? An hour or two a day is enough
Reading and listening? A few hours a day on top of studying
>>
>>149174138
Honestly except for anki and reading grammar nothing the rest is kind of fun.
Try things like
-Do your studying before work instead of after, if you can wake up early
-Instead of evenly adding cards, add extra cards on weekends and add fewer cards on weekdays. If you have anki synced to your phone you can even get some of your cards done at work during slow times or do 10 minutes while you're on the shitter
-do extra study after finishing the "hard" study by listening to songs while following along with the lyrics. But remember that this is only if you can't do any more real study, since it is much less effective.

But really if you do nothing but anki at an average of 15 words a day youll still finish Core 2k in reasonable time. And sometime between 2-4k words studying gets a lot easier.

I wouldn't go slower than that thought if you want to read manga in the next year.

Also, if you're really short on time, I think it's okay to delay grammar until you have 1000 words or so down, because all the grammar guides and textbooks will be using those words, so they will be much easier to read through knowing their vocabulary.
>>
>>149174245
That's not keigo though.

But yes, that's not how you would say "sorry" in keigo if you actually meant it. You would say 申し訳ございません
>>
>>149174402

And I mean not the same level of keigo, since I know someone is going to come tell me that teineigo is still keigo.

What is actual study? I do an hour plus some change of anki every day and as much reading as I can which is an hour or less on weekdays since I have very very little free time. On weekends I read for hours all day long and occasionally take breaks to watch anime.

How often and how much to you guys practice pronunciation to make sure you don't sound silly when you get a chance to speak in japanese to someone?
And what part of japanese pronunciation do you find most difficult?
>>
>>149175527

I don't plan to ever talk to a Japanese person outside of text. If I speak out loud it's because I'm saying some chuuni shit under my breath or something. Speaking is my last priority outside of writing.

>>
>>149154157
There was a chunk of it which was purchased for others. I'm sure a lot of anons who post in these threads have enough combined to reupload most of it, but like most anons with these sort of things, would rather take and not give back.
What could be fruitful is to make individual series request posts in the thread, linking the op post so others may be able to see it easier, and seeing if anyone is willing to reupload that. Anons are probably more willing to upload a single series with a couple of volumes as opposed to indiscriminately uploading a whole bunch of stuff.

That's ridiculous. If you want to learn Japanese, do it properly. I won't pretend that kanji is easy, but it's simply a matter of time, just like every other language. At a very leisurely pace, you could learn the 2000 most common kanji in 4 months.
>>
>>149185276

Nah like I'm seriously thinking about it... and I know what kind of commitment it is. Like 4 hours a day for 6 months to get even close to competent. Probably years for fluency in speaking/reading/writing of endless dedication.

I'm not a student so I don't have all the free time in the world.... but damn sometimes I wish I could rewind time to when I was 3. So hard to learn languages when ur brain is fully developed.

Kanji isn't a massive time sink because you have to just learn them all separately, they're a massive time sink because of how much they inflate the vocab learning process, even if you know all the jouyou kanji it doesn't change the fact that learning Japanese vocabulary takes much longer because a large chunk of the words have irregular and unpredictable meanings

The "you learn languages more easily when young" is a big meme to justify laziness really.
When you're young you can more easily sink hours upon hours on learning a specific thing, that's basically it.
Barely any neuroplasticity potential is lost upon adulthood.
>>
>>149185368
It really isn't. If you do 25 words from Core2k6k and 15-20 kanji from RTK1 or KKLC every day - fairly manageable, in my opinion -, after 4 months you will have completed either book and studied 3000 words. That's more than enough to start building vocabulary and familiarity with the language purely from exposure to Japanese content and occasional referencing to intermediate/advanced resources.
>>149185453
I would argue that kanji makes learning vocabulary much easier, if anything.
>a large chunk of the words have irregular and unpredictable meanings
That may be true, but there's also a very large chunk that's all but trivial if you already know the constituent kanji.

You'll probably have an easier time learning if you bothered participating in the /a/ "favorite japanese expression" meme threads.

When I was starting out I'd instantly remember a kanji if it was linked to a meme word that I liked.
>>
>>149185524
>a large chunk of the words have irregular and unpredictable meanings
Sorry I meant readings, but meanings as well to a lesser extent I guess, it is a mixed bag, sometimes words have really obvious readings if you already know the kanji, but a lot of the time even when you know the kanji it doesn't help at all with the reading at least, meaning the only thing you can do is drill them into your head with something like anki

In other languages that don't have the irregular reading system that Japan has this is never a problem because all words can be read as they are seen, meaning it's much less of a time sink, but then again those languages don't benefit from the easy to predict meanings like Japanese words have, so I guess maybe it evens out
>>
>>149185450
I learnt Japanese from watching subbed anime so yes
>>
I didn't realize I'm not supposed to spam enter on anki. Is this the reason why all of my cards are "young" and 0% are "mature"?

I didn't even see the easy/hard/normal/again shit until someone in this general pointed that out.
>>

Kanji is completely retarded. Its analogous to creating a digit for every number up to a million. Truly an ingenious writing system designed by the brightest mind in ancient japan.

Yeah, this is exactly what my response would've been if you had said readings instead of meanings.
>>

I have a love hate relationship with kanji, they have a bunch of benefits and look really nice alongside kana, but god damn I wish someone would fix the reading system

Learning languages is a long process. Some people are gifted and learn new languages in a year or so.
It took me many years to learn English even with constant exposure (games, tv, school lessons).

A god awful tie-in game for a shitty series that not even the dumbest of nerds would touch with a 10 foot barge pole has had a minor edit via a patch to meet a lower rating so they can sell it to 12 year olds instead of 15 year olds, because 12 year olds are the biggest market for this trash.

It's the same EDICT definitions from Jisho.org

If you want something to cross-reference the EDICT definitions with, try the Kodansha Kanji Learners Dictionary in the CoR. It's unfortunately not as easy to look up kanji in as Jisho is since it hasn't been OCR'd (meaning you can't CTRL+F to search through it), and the version in the CoR is an old version from 2001 which doesn't have the 2010 jouyou additions in it. There might be some other good resources in the CoR, but I'm not sure.

The best resources are probably written in Japanese for Japanese people, but I don't know of any. Maybe someone else can point you to some.

No, for any ready to review card. That's how the SRS in Anki is designed: to show you the card just prior to the expected forgetting period. Even putting off doing mature cards which show up once every few months for a few days has an impact on the overall accuracy of the scheduling. Anki2 implemented a means to compensate for missed reviews but it isn't perfect.
>>
>>149189321
And to add: While still learning a lot of cards.

But lets say you are only learning 10 cards per day, you don't need to review more than ~200 times.

There are also limits to learning per day.
>>
>>149189340
The exact date you review a card on matters less and less as its interval increases.

Anki's single exponential growth is not an accurate model of memory retention and will always be wrong by several days even on young cards.

>>149189281

Mature intervals are actually kind of conservative in the first place unless you press easy too much. It doesn't matter that much because anki's scheduling is wildly inaccurate in the first place.

In terms of the SRS used by the program, no it doesn't. The rest of your post is irrelevant to the discussion. We aren't talking about that. If you have nothing to further to say on the actual topic of discussion, I have no further interest in discussing this as arguments about retention models, etc. are ultimately pointless and have been discussed to death a thousand times over.

See above. The comment was in respect to a specific claim. I'm not talking about your difference of opinion as to the program effectiveness or not, I'm talking about the program itself. Your personal conjecture is irrelevant and if you have nothing to further to say on the actual topic of discussion, I have no further interest in discussing this as arguments about retention models, etc. are ultimately pointless and have been discussed to death a thousand times over.

It actually does. Memory decay is pseudo-exponential, and being off by one or two days has a smaller and smaller relative effect on the interval, and thus, on the next interval, as the actual interval increases. Anki is not picky about exact dates. It literally randomizes card intervals by a small amount by design. Being late by a small number of days will, literally, inherently, by design, according to the SRS used by the program, have less and less of an effect as a card's interval increases.

Yeah, I know, I was just wondering if there was a poem or wordplay for ます ません ました ませんでしあ.

Anyway another question if you don't mind:
>I have heard on a number of occasions that the negative non-past conjugation as given here is not an "officially" correct conjugation. Instead what's considered to be a more "correct" conjugation is to actually replace the 「ないです」 part with 「ありません」. The reasoning is that the polite negative form of the verb 「ある」 is not 「ないです」 but 「ありません」. Therefore, 「かわいくない」 actually becomes 「かわいくありません」 and 「静かじゃない」 becomes 「静かじゃありません」.

How real is this?
>>
>>149190068
ないです is vernacular.
ありません is both written and vernacular.

No matter what you do to anki, the only ways to make its SRS malfunction are to misconfigure it, lie on your answers, or put off cards for so long that you forget them, thus putting them back to an interval of one day even if you only really needed a reminder. Answering a mature card a few days late makes the SRS mistreat it about as much as if you had some minor natural exposure to the term recently, which is to say not at all.

Push yourself as hard as when you used to play the memory card game with your siblings. It shouldn't be too hard.
Read the rest of the guide once you're done.

Does てしまう and ちゃう ever actually mean "to do something completely"?

As far as I can remember grammar guides always teach that it means that first, and then casually mention that it means to do something accidentally aswell, but I don't think I've ever seen the former
>>
>>149190515
It's more like "to end up in a state of completion", which can be a good or bad thing.

How much do you read? Doesn't seem like that should be a problem that far in if you're reading regularly

Or are you one of these core 10k ankidrones that don't start grammar and reading until a year in

Doesn't help that handwritten katakana is even harder to separate between those two.

Today i studied for six hours.
Almost at my eight hour goal.
It's only natural since the more i study the more i get gud the less studying become "studying".

Still didn't start to think in japanese though, fuck.

Also, this week i ate garlic each day so now my pee and sweat smell like garlic, cool.

>その人が買うんじゃなかったの?

What's with the double の here? I mean isn't

Sorry if stupid question.

の as a nominalizer for verbs
>なかったの
の as a gobi (sentence-ending particle)
>>
>>149190814
Bear with me a little, I think I get what you are saying but don't quite get the mechanics:

http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/nounparticles

But you are saying the の here refers to 買う? Kinda like 白いの (The thing that is white)?

But then why is の at the end again?

Isn't んじゃなかった and not じゃなかったの?
>>
Anon's tip of the day

KanjiTomo has various shortcuts only listed in the config.txt

These shortcuts actually make the entire thing usable
>>
>>149191066
>Using crutches

It would be better if you just learnt the language
>>
>>149191089
I'm using kanjitomo in combination with anki realtime import to do exactly that
>>
>>149191032
All natural languages have a way to convert verbs into nouns. English uses gerunds and infinitival phrases.

Issue: Japanese doesn't have a gerund like "jumping".
Solution: It simulates gerunds by appending の or こと.
買うの ~= buying
買うこと ~= buying

This is called "nominalization". Gerunds are a form of nominalization. Japanese has a form of nominalization that doesn't use gerunds.

(side note: classical japanese did have gerunds, but it doesn't anymore)

Nono, I understand that part,

勉強するのを忘れた。

"Forgot to study"

my confusion comes from の being at the end of the sentence again because example there always lists it んじゃなかった.
>>
>>149191150
Ask english. English lost its case system entirely.

Technically, it didn't lose its gerund class outright. Its gerund class was a "gerund-participle nexus", just like English's gerund (i.e. "jumping person" and "jumping is fun" used the same conjugation of "jumping").

What happened was its adnominal conjugation (the gerund-participle nexus) merged with the one put at the end of sentences, so using it as a gerund started sounding archaic and then stopped being grammatical.
>>
>>149191238
の at the end makes it a question.
>>
>>149191238
As long as you don't attach the same particle to the same word more than once you're fine.

There is a place where you might get confused, though. In tokyo vernacular, る can be pronounced and written as ん (always pronounced as n in this context).

するの->すんの

How the fuck do you guys pass the jlpt so easily just using anki? Its impossible, specifically the grammar. I cant into it at all.

"that is how the memorization just is"?

I forgot to write down the answers because im a tard. But i know you got the 1st one (3) right. Can you explain it to me?

Also, i think you got the 2nd one wrong (2), it was the 4th one i remember. Its because the 4th option means the speaker is more sure of himself.

Ill probably upload another one of these in the next thread with the right answers.
