Not really, they just thought it was abnormal. It could be that there might be some katana wanking coming forth, but it could just as well be that they think it's just a really unusual way to make a sword.
Ultimately, the concept of folding metal in order to purify it is not exactly an uncommon concept, but it's very outdated, seeing that it no longer became necessary to go through with that process when petter quality metals became available.

The way you can fix a broken blade like that is that you either reforge it or grind a new point on it.
Now, if you reforge it, you may end up with something different seeing that you'd fuck up the tempering.
