>Funimation having an early release so it can qualify for the Oscars.
Who's ready for Shinkai to be the 2nd person to win the Oscar after Miyazaki?
Stupid Oscars aside, sweet I was hoping to see this in theatres.
Holy shit, Keit-ai is going to win an oscar?
>>149052751
Miyazaki just got lucky with Spirited Away given that the year it competed in had no western film with a strong critical reception. Your Name. has to compete with Zootopia, which was well-received or probably Moana if it turns out to be the better-performing Disney movie.
It probably deserves it and it has enough sales to be nominated unlike Miss Hokusai last year
>>149052910
Miss Hokusai wasn't even eligible, anon. It has to be released in US theaters.
>>149052967
I saw it in the UK theatre desu. Does it need a wide USA release surely somewhere put it on at least once
>>149052942

The Oscars proved themselves absolute retarded trash forever when Kaguya did not win. Who gives even a quarter of half a shit
>>149052967
It just has to be screened for 7 consecutive days in LA tobe elegible
>>149053027
There's some specific requirements, but I forget what they are. And a quick Google shows that it's actually arriving in the US this month. So it's probably eligible for this year's.
finds a way
>>149052910
How does Japanese sales factor into anything? It'll get its shitty Japanese Academy Award since they're even shittier and more worthless than the American one
>>149052751
Why bother? Finding Dory is going to win, and even if it doesn't, Kubo and the Two Strings deserves it more.
>>149053466
Actually, I forgot Zootopia came out this year. It'll win for sure.
Anyway, I'm glad it's getting screenings. Hopefully they're as spread out as the Godzilla showings were and not as limited as your typical Aniplex release.
Also please, Funimation, license A Silent Voice so I can see it on a big screen.
>>149052885
Lilo and Stitch was released the same year but Disney backed Spirited Away instead. Your Name wouldn't win even regardless given the competition (Finding Dory, Kubo and the Two Strings, Zootopia) plus its pretty mediocre all things considered
>>149052751
>giving a shit about the Oscars
Kimi no na Wa doesn't need to win one for validation. Fuck the West.
>>149052751
KyoAni and Yamada BTFO as usual. Shinkai too based.
You forget that Hollywood hates Asians. Spirited Away only got an Oscar because Miyazaki's Ghibli and Pixar were buddies.

The jews that judge the oscars literally don't give a single fuck about the animated segment. They don't even have to watch the title in question to judge it either. These kinds of awards are just an academic circle jerk, and the US is deep in the animation ghetto.

You don't have to have a wide opening to qualify for the Academy Awards.
All you have to do is have it play at a cinema in Los Angeles County for seven consecutive days. That's it. Also good luck getting an Best Animated Feature - most of the academy leaves that part of the ballot blank and a disturbing amount pick Pixar films by default because "their kids dragged them to see it".
The Academy Awards isn't a measure of excellence - it's Hollywood jerking itself off.

Yeah, good luck with that.
Spirited Away winning was a freak anomaly. Voters just doesn't care for animation unless if it's some movie (almost certainly Pixar/Disney) their kids dragged them into.
If it's foreign animation, expect a nomination at the very least- their chances of winning are effectively zero.

You couldn't be more wrong.
It's completely possible to have deeper subtext with the most simple of the subjects or settings.
The way he uses camera angles, color palettes, music and all the stuff he enjoy adding to his movies are in no way complex or convoluted.
Just look at the train metaphor on 5cm/s or the final scene of MC simply waiting and watching as they go by, how is that complex? It's a mundane common event.
Another great example is the story of Beyond the Clouds. The way he shows characters growing up through the change in music and scenario is extremely simple yet transmits a very clear idea.
For comparison, something that wants to be deep and strives to be deep in a blatant manner is SHAFT's adaptation of ef.

what about the supposedly poetic monologues that MC recites all the time? it is also mundane?and the enormous amount of detail, light and color that he puts in every background to make them the most beautiful possible? is mundane too? you can not make a simple story if the directing style is the total opposite. mimi wo sumaseba is mudane, only yesterday is mundane, kimi and 5cm are pretentious.

That's why I hate it. I'm sick of these garbage films.
You can look at all these films, Zootopia, Moana, Lego movie, Wreck It Ralph, Big Hero 6, Finding Dory.
It's always the same recycled trite with some differences in setting. It's the equivalent of a series of generic ecchi moe anime.
Caricature-ish artstyle with ridiculous looking characters that look less like humans and more like clay golems, same character archetypes, same kind of stories (I must save the world, protect my friends whatever) covered by really obnoxious passive-aggresive humour.
That shit drives me up the wall as I stopped finding it entertaining when I became 16 and 6 years later this shit is still popular.
I will admit Moana is visually very impressive but it set up all the red flags I am used to with these movies. I just feel like this doesn't aspire to anything other than selling pretty graphics and merch to kids.

yes, but as I said, the differential is the subtlety. balance is the key. if your goal is to tell a simple story, there is no need to be visually grandiloquent, because then you will be calling attention to the wrong thing. not a coincidence the aesthetic is the first thing that is mentioned when people talk about shinkai.
>>149053705

As long as the visual effects do not obscure what each scene is meant to convey it's perfectly fucking fine.
And Kimi no Na Wa does that just fine. All the visually grandiloquent scenes aren't just glamorous vistas for the sake of being pretty, they're all composited to highlight the focus of the scene.
I'd say the time lapse shots in the movie are the most indulgent Shinkai gets and even those serve the purpose of conveying the passage of time.

Seriously, kill yourself. Take a long walk off a short pier. Do a flip. Do some shots of Bleach. I don't care what method you choose, commit to it.

You should make a pact with the guy up there.

inb4 this and Kubo lose to Finging Dory
>>149072145
No, Shinkai adds all that beauty because that is what he is best at. What he needs is a better writer than himself, not making his movies look as bad as his writing.

Why blame me for posting something he posted too?
I can't wait for all your greasy weeb tears when this overrated shit gets btfo by some equally generic movie from Disney at the Oscars.

>B-B-But this is better cause it's Japanese uguu

That show went to shit at the end. So much promise, so much fucking salt due to NTR.
>inb4 hurr ayy-ree was better

>>149072458
no, i'm saying that he needs to learn how to better develop the interactions between the characters to better suit the visuals that he wants to show. as i said before, he does not know how to create balance. that's why feels heavy handed and fake.
>>149072724
Dunno, Garden of Words did alright on that front, even if the ending was super hammy.
>>149072709
What the fuck are you even saying.
>>149067216
No, the problem is you think you're some genius of cinematography while in reality you're just a pretentious faggot.
Mundane? Kimi no Nawa is mundane? Are you fuckin kiddin me?! Shinkai is extremely sentimental. That's the problem. He wants to make a bag flying in the street seem the most poetical thing in the universe. That's the problem. He romanticize everything. That's the problem. Mundane? Simple? My ass! It's the complete opposite. Go watch Isao Takahata and Yasujiro Ozu to understand what is to be mundane and simple.

I just watched this movie a week ago and I think it was fantastic. Except that in the end it was really teasing that it might have a crap conclusion, but it ended up good, so I was relieved
>Shinaki tries to be deep but isn't
I want kyoanifags to leave
>>149072824
garden was a step forward. but the development remains lazy. the characters change from "i don't even know her name" to "thank you for saving me" in a blink.
>>149073521
Ok, explain why Shinaki is deep. Pls.
>>149073598
Because you're too dumb to see past the pretty pictures.
So when are they actually announcing theater dates/locations? And it's going to be subbed, right? Because some people here are saying a dub is confirmed, and I can't even see anything on their site/twitter talking about the releasing the movie at all, much less any specifics.
People who said Shinkai's stuffs deep are just sentimentalfags
Well, considering how bad the voice acting for the MCs was, a dub might actually be an improvement._______________Nah.
Your Name will get the nomination but wouldn't win. But it will push Koe no Katachi to win next year.
>>149074035
> Koe no Katachi
That manga brought me to tears, and it has the potential to do the same to westerners because this time the concept is much simpler and easier to sympathize with, than japanese time-travel fuckery that western audience seems to hate.
It's gonna be gud regardless, I don't really care about the Oscars and i'm not sure who does nowadays. Who even trusts critics anymore when you have the internet and can research by yourself?
Both Kimi no Na Wa and Koe no Katachi are amazing works that don't need snot-faced western critics for validation, they hit their crowd.
