I learnt the basics of mahjong from Akagi. As long as you have those subs that briefly explain the terms they use when they pop up, then just go with the flow after reading the wikipedia page on Japanese mahjong.

It's one of those shows that you can rewatch again and again because each time you'll have a bit more knowledge about the game and be rewarded for it.

It's just the scoring system that takes a while to learn. The basics of mahjong is all you need to know to enjoy the game, and it goes through all the detailed stuff with over-the-top metaphors anyway.

Anyway, Kaiji is obviously very good, but in terms of gambru Akagi is much better. Akagi basically takes you on an adventure about true successful gambling while Kaiji is more about learning by mistakes.

I was just trying to convince OP that he is wrong if he thinks that Kaiji is better and Akagi is not worth watching. Also one of them appeals more to the casual bunch, one of them less.

It's not so different from poker, except instead of 5 cards = one hand it's 13 blocks = 3-4 hands and straights are 3 in a row not 5. Well anyway waiting on outs and difference between open-ended draws and closed outs is the most frequent mechanic. Akagi basically plays unlikely and thus well disguised draws (in poker we call players like these "fish").
