I'm mid way through watching this for the second time and some things seem really heavy handed the second time around.

Like when Shichika talks about how the sentou tsurugi and the various deviant blades want to be with their owner. Then 30 seconds later, Togame is questioning why he fell for her so quickly.

Both Togame and Hiteihime's life was indelibly marked by an event they witnessed at childhood which they had no other way of processing or coming to terms with except for confronting (The death of Togame's father for Togame, and the onset of Shikizaki Kiki's visions for Hiteihime). Their entire lives were literally defined by these moment. Sure, she could theoretically have come to peace with it at some point in her life, but that's no more likely than Hitei abandoning her plan to bring Kiki's plan to ruin. Both of them were good at heart but ultimately made into ruthless schemers by their environment. Neither of them was anything like a "good guy".

All these Katanagatari threads lately really make me want to rewatch it.

People always play up how ruthless Togame is but her moe moments are all genuine.

She's genuine when she acts like a child and like a princess, and when she gets jealous, and when she flirts. That scene where they're freezing to death and she says a family life would be better was a genuine wish as well.

Her revenge is a contradiction in her existence, but it doesn't totally define her.

Like pretty much every other character in Katanagatari.
Most characters were (or used to be) assassins, robbers, whatever, but all of them were shown to have a good side to them. However, they all made mistakes that ultimately costed them their lives. The main mistake most of them shared was not letting go of the past.

Hitei is a good person. The LNs elaborate but Togame's death was Hitei basically Old Yellering Togame since Togame had doomed herself.

Basically

1. Togame's revenge succeeds and she kills the man she loves.

or

2. Togame comes close to success but dies at the hand of the Shogun.

Hitei killed Togame because she knew that Togame was a walking corpse. This is reinforced with the Monk who spends an episode all but begging Togame to reconsider

You might even argue that Togame dying before getting her revenge is the best possible end for her, since she is legitimately happy she doesn't have to kill Shichika

She was too strong, even for her own body, so she was suffering, because of the strain her power gave her, but couldn't die, since she was too strong.
