Correction, GATE not rekting magic but medieval armies. But watching story focused on modern military destroying medieval warfare still kind of rare. The first time I watch the opening and saw there are elf character and magician who life in the forest, I thought this will be a story where our heroes is actually on the medieval side, trying to stop the modern military forces from colonizing their world and corrupting the peaceful nature and villages.

For a fantasy world to beat a modern force you need a few conditions to be met.

First if arrows and bolts are viable weapons without magic then the modern force dominates due to the massive advantage of firearms over bows and cross bows.
If you need magic to make arrows work then you make everyone into a magic user or the production side requires magic for arrows used against humans.

The same question applies to artillery. If the fantasy side never advanced to the use of field artillery against soldiers rather than just fortifications why would they have a defense against it? Sure you can say they learned and adapted magic to defeat indirect fire but to what limit? If a bomber drops 50,000kg of HE bombs will a shield just absorb all that power?

If you say no to range weapons that lack magic you must justify the energy diverted. If a sabot dart from a MBT is putting out 12MJ of power is it reasonable to expect a shield meant to stop arrows which are in the range of 60J to work?

Next can a handheld weapon damage an armored vehicle? It would need to be magic. So now we have magic arms that can cut through metal as if it was nothing. What industrial application in terms of machining and stone work does that imply?

Do they have magic armor that stops magic swords? Does everyone have this?

Does that magic armor protect them from flamethrowers and poison gas, as well as explosive forces and being crushed?

Simply put a fantasy force can do harm with magic but only if you take magic to an all inclusive level can it beat a modern force.

It makes sense because old equipment is adequate, it is cheaper, they could abandon them at a moment's notice and retreat without losing too much, and if the weapons were captured and used against them then they can pull out the better guns.

They even deliberately hid the true maximum range of their artillery by having them fire at shorter range than they need to be. You don't show all your cards unless you have to. It also helps that old equipment are easier to maintain in the field and needed less infrastructure like GPS satellites.

Except if you give armies that kind of power then there would be no reason to have men wearing metal armour and swinging swords. The entire Fantasy element gets destroyed if the classic footman became obsolete and disappear. If forces that can fight modern armies truly existed, then all the medieval weapons and armour would be necessity disappear too.
