Suabru's development doesn't show too well in the anime, particularly due to cut content and poor choice of end point. Through the first three arcs (the anime) he sees himself as the defacto RPG protagonist hero, and therefore the rest of the cast is supposed to revolve around him. Up until very late arc3 and mid-early arc4, he treats Rem like a literal puppy most of the time and only sees Emilia as the designated herione/love interest character. It's not until Rem confesses before the Whale fight/tricks Subaru into confessing after that he truly respects her as a person rather than a character.
