Ever notice how there's so much Christian symbolism in Anime and Japanese video games that take place in the West? I wonder if they really think we're all still die-hard religious fanatics.
They do it because they think it looks cool.
Abrahamic religions are almost nonexistent in Japan historically except for a few notable examples.
They use it the same way the west uses eastern imagery, for exoticism
They just do it because they think it looks cool. Most famous example is Evangelion.
They probably think we're all christians in the same way the west thinks that all asians are buddhist monks
>I wonder if they really think we're all still die-hard religious fanatics.
Speaking for yourself heretic.

This.
What if we just used symbolism from every mythology at once?
>I'm smart, I don't believe in God.
>>148929104
The Church used to be cool with badass crusaders driving the infidels out of the Balkans, Southern France and all of Iberia. Honestly our Pope needs to stop licking heathen feet and needs to set up crusading orders against Islam in Europe. Also Christian symbolism is badass due to it's history just to clarify.

KILL HIM NOW BEFORE HE BRINGS DOWN OUR ENTIRE FOUNDATION
>>148931763

Without dogma, God is an undefined concept.
Don't try to make logical arguments with undefined concepts.
For various cultural reasons, different people use the word god in different ways as part of constructing their personal metaphysics.
Unless someone brings up the notion of a tangible god, don't assume their god is anything more than a figure of speech.
>>148931763
Because the world is a merithocracy
Now, your contempt for "religions" while grouping every one on the Abrahamic paradigm comes off as extremely ignorant and closed minded

that's actually a myth, the crusades were only a minor part of christianity, christian europe actually spent most of it's time fighting among themselves despite the whole ten commandments telling christian "THOU SHALT NOT KILL".
At one point some french nobles sent an army to fight the cathars in france and they ended up slaughtering an entire city after a bishop told them to just kill everyone because god would be able to tell who the heretics were.
>>148933281
>christian europe actually spent most of it's time fighting among themselves
This.
>>148933281
"Thou shalt not kill" does not refer to killing in warfare - obvious since Moses gave that commandment and then led the Israelites in bloody slaughter. Does anyone think the Old Testament is pacifist? Didn't think so.
>>148933281
>At one point some french nobles sent an army to fight the cathars in france and they ended up slaughtering an entire city after a bishop told them to just kill everyone because god would be able to tell who the heretics were.
The Albigensian Crusade, yeah. At the time you gotta understand that the church was practically the state at that point in time. The only real reason they went after heretical sects of Christianity is that it challenged the power of the church if it got enough followers.
>>148933987
>thou shalt not kill
>unless you issue an proclamationn of war first, then its totally ok dude
Also wasnt the genocide sanctioned by god because of some dumb fuck reason? Like, the official reason was that god told them to go and commit genocide.
Judeo-Christian mythology, like almost all mythologies, is cool as fuck. Sperg out as much as you like about how Eva's symbolism was meaningless and random (wrong and overstated by memers who didn't actually watch it by the way) but you know in your heart that the show would be a good bit less interesting without it.
>>148933281
>christian europe actually spent most of it's time fighting among themselves
You almost make it sound as though this isn't true for pretty much the entirety of humanity throughout history.
>>148929104
>I wonder if they really think we're all still die-hard religious fanatics.

Thou is a singular pronoun esl-kun.

I wouldn't be surprised if God ordered a genocide. I mean, He ordered Abraham to kill Isaac and he also created the Great Flood to wipe out all life, so it only makes sense that He'd also order a genocide.
>>148934730
Yeah, anon's begging the question on genocide being a bad thing.

Nah, it's just that Christianity is exotic and different, which is what they want in something set in an exotic and different place, such as any Western country.
>>148935057
> Murder vs. kill
Translations are a bitch. Everyone dies, but the book frowns on wrathful killing.
Didn't Anno just say all the christian imagery is because it looks and sounds interesting?
Christianity in general probably looked really crazy to the Japanese when they started making contact with western society and the Jesuits and all that.
The symbology looks cool, the fervent believers didn't fear death, the rituals probably looked even crazier.
I mean, the sacrament would seem absolutely bizarre to anyone who didn't grow up in a western culture.
>>148929104
It's just the reverse of Westerners fapping over muh samurai/katana/eastern religion symbols
>>148929104
They do it because unlike the Muslims, Christians don't get pissy about their religion being used in good or bad light
>>148929104
It has a beautiful aesthetic that isn't very common in japan.
>>148935466
>the fervent believers didn't fear death
And this most certainly impressed the Nips who respected the Samurai who'll gut themselves just to regain lost honor. The whole death by crucifixion stuff must have been seen just as hardcore.
>>148935466
>I mean, the sacrament would seem absolutely bizarre to anyone who didn't grow up in a western culture.
The only really "bizarre" sacrament I can think of is holy communion.
And maybe confession but less so
The rest is
>Marriage
>ceremony at age if religious
self-determination (confirmatio)
>entering a holy order
>extreme unction
>ceremony at birth or conversion(baptism)
>>148929104
BECAUSE IT LOOKS COOL
The same reason japanophiles think random kanji is cool
Slap on some random bible quote or cool symbols and it's super cool now
>>148935940
Communion really had to seem insane.
I'm not sure how you'd explain it.
>Well, you see, when you eat the bread/wafer or whatever it becomes the flesh of Jesus Christ. And the wine becomes his blood.
>Oh, you mean it's supposed to represent those things?
>No, we believe it literally becomes the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
>uh
>>148935940
If they met the right sects at the right time, self-flagellation might still have been a thing.
>>148935674
>Implying Christians don't get butthurt about their religion being disrespected all the fucking time.
There are idiots of all religions Anon. The only difference is that the muslim ones tend to murder people, since they grow up in war-torn countries and all that.
>>148936276
Well Flagellantism is a heresy since the 14th century.
>>148936236
>Oh, you mean it's supposed to represent those things?
God damned protestants
>>148929104
Nah, they just think it's cool. I remember Anno saying he put a lot of Christian symbolism in Eva because he thought it would look cool.
Because christian symbols have almost universal meaning in the western world
>>148936306
>war-torn countries
Like Belgium, France and Holland?
