While the shit-to-good ratio was exactly the same as today, 80's and 90's anime was superior to today's.
The main reason why anime was so good during the 80's and 90's was Japan having money to invest on it.
The worst anime period to date was early to middle 2000
Westerners have no right to complain about things like "moe" or "idol" because they aren't anime's primary customer. Why would the industry ignore a fat otaku who spends millions of yens in Love Live! merch every year in favor of a random nobody who watched Cowboy Bebop in TV a decade ago?
A good anime is the one that entertains; a bad anime is the one that bores; that's the only valid metric.

If you don't have those earlier shows as a foundation for comparison, NGE is a pretty bland show these days, but it was pretty great when in the context of its time.

The problem is that the vast majority of people that rave about it don't fall into that category and are just bandwagoning. Unless you're 35+ and actually watched anime in the 80s then NGE shouldn't be anything special. I'm not even convinced it's not just a mediocre series filled with so many plot holes that people accidentally misconstrued it as being deep.
