This movie had so many comfy and tense scenes. Truly the pinnacle of Kyoani.

Up until then Kyon had just been feverishly trying to figure out what was going on, who was behind it, and how to restore the world to how it should be. That was the point where he stopped to fully consider the implications and understood it all. The reason everything happened was because a friend of his had gone through a mental breakdown, and if he intended to get back the world he wanted, he would have no other choice but to cause her even more suffering. He had to choose between two alternate timelines. Whichever one he would choose, the other one would vanish into nonexistence. Having to make a choice like that would be a pretty terrible burden. In the light novels after the movie, he appears to feel guilt over it; he mentions that he misses alternate Nagato's smile and that he has dreams about her.

Also, he admitted to himself that even though he keeps complaining about Haruhi and her antics, he does actually enjoy them and isn't willing to lose them. That was a pretty significant character moment for him too.

It was asinine.

No, I'm not trying to be contrarian and against popular opinion. When I saw the scene I was rolling my eyes at how "epic" and dramatic the scene was trying to be with Kyon talking to himself and slamming his own head down in chastisement.

My problem with the scene is that Kyon already went through the development of "I whine and bitch about Haruhi but I enjoy what she does" in season 1. There was no need for this scene to reiterate again, especially considering the fact that the movie never really bothered to show why Kyon would want to live in Yuki's world in the first place. When he gets transported to the fake world he's panicking like a little shit and doing his best to restore the original world. We never actually see him enjoying the peaceful world. So when it comes to this scene of making a choice there's really no emotional uplift in Kyon chastising himself and choosing the original world.
