I admit her devotion to Touma is admirable. But yea, I hope this is just one aspect of her character development.

I always saw things like this.

Mikoto's character in Index is a girl in love with the MC. Within Touma's world she's a sometimes creepy and frightening, but loyal and brave friend.

Just like how Kuroko is a hyperactive tag along kid within Touma's world.

When we enter Mikoto's world through Railgun we see more of her personal character arc.

Imagine the life you've lived up to this point. Within your own life there's been people who fill generic roles like love interest, cold old mentor, bully, etc. But when you think about their own lives you're just a generic archetype yourself.
