The fact that so many books still name Kyoani as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" anime studio ever only tells you how far anime still is from becoming a serious art. Music critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Anime critics are still blinded by commercial success. K-On! sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they are the greatest. Film critics grow up watching a lot of films of the past, music critics grow up listening to a lot of music of the past. Anime critics are often totally ignorant of the anime of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Kyoani did anything worthy of being saved.
