That's the draw for me too. The main story is way too angsty. Not to mention separating the couple that drives the best part of the story for pretty much half of the entire story while she gets regular beatings from the bad guy is just a recipe for disaster.

I'm not really sad there might never be a third season, as there's nothing really worthwhile to see in the rest of the story.

Fumoffu is on the other end of the spectrum though. Being nothing but precisely those wacky school shenanigans you'd think it would be great, and it's certainly amusing, but it's all fluff and nothing behind it. There's no development between them at all.

Did you guys miss that a new season was announced or something?

No, seriously. In the original first draft, she was the designated love interest. Chidori was originally written to be a once-off character who would get off stage after she was rescued.

However, Chidori's chemistry with Sagara was such that Gatoh decided to keep her. And thus the original heroine got demoted and replaced in the published version of Full Metal Panic with a violent tsundere.

All because Sagara is a submissive man, who is happy to take orders and don't mind being physically abused. He was a perfect fit for Chidori.
