Is Spice & Wolf seriously the only LN series with good diction, writing, and wit?
Of the LNs translated to English? It's up there. One thing to keep in mind is the competency of the TL/editor.
Sky's a good example of this. Pretty much everything he translates is very coherent and flows well. That being said, it is a CN>ENG trans.
>>148772687Where do I get the epubs for this? I want to read everything on my phone. Season 3 will never come so might as well.
>>148772918Not OP, but 17 vols including the epilogue are on nyaa.
>>148772975
Just had a look and it seems it's by Drunken Wolf Translations. How is the translation accuracy/quality? What about when compared to Yen Press?
>>148772876
I seriously choked on my own spit and laughed for a solid minute at this part. It caught me totally off-guard.
The translation is definitely quite appreciable. Almost all fanTLs aren't remotely at this level of quality, but I guess that's the difference between amateur novel translations and amateur VN/anime translations. Less e-peen I guess. I'd say Yen Press > Drunken Wolf, and I think you can get it on bakabt.
I don't even know what to read now, even outside the realm of LNs. I read 10+ volumes in 3 days, which is at least 2000 pages. I could probably read endlessly about their SoL daily life, rendered complete with witty banter and hnngh-inducing deredere antics. It's a huge shame that Maoyuu never was localized in the west.
Also, I guess part of my vexation is that most vanilla novels don't have that delicate balance between a bunch of different disparate genres in equal measure - in this case; economics, romance, moe, and bantz, blending everything together with a modest touch of drama and tragedy, but still managing to have a happy ending.
I got my book on Monday, one of the last people to get it if this number is any indication.. Wonder who got 2000.
>>148772687
read more, you faggot.
I know I'm going to get shit for this, but I enjoyed the writing/TL of the Monogatari novels, both the fan ones and the official Kizu novel. (Which I actually just read last night.)
>>148773299
Apparently the collector editions sold extremely quickly and they've already started up a second run.
Hopefully we get the final Holo/Lawrence-focused chapter (Spring Log) and New Theory.
>>148773284
Why the fuck does the editor break the paragraphs so damn much? Each sentence does not deserve a paragraph break. Literally unreadable.

That's japanese for ya
>>148773453
Oh I'm well aware, considering I was on the Amazon roller coaster of not knowing whether I would even get a first edition copy or not until I finally got confirmation a week after the initial release date.
Spice and Wolf is some of the best written stuff to come out of Japan in a very long time.
>>148773415
Nisio is good but he can still be too... Nisio.
I love Monogatari but S&W has a much wider appeal and it doesn't need to rely on toying with old tropes to be good.
>>148773611
Just because the original Japanese breaks for a paragraph every sentence, that doesn't mean the same needs to happen for the translation. It might be nice if the editor took some creative liberties to make it flow slightly better. What do I know, though, since I'm not a professional editor or translator.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-10-17/yen-press-adds-spice-and-wolf-short-story-collection-sequel-novels/.107771
>Yen Press announced at Isuna Hasekura's panel at New York Comic Con on October 7 that it will publish a Spice & Wolf short story collection and sequel novels. The publisher plans to release Spice and Wolf, Volume 18: Spring Log and the first volume of Spice and Wolf New Theory: Parchment and Wolf in 2017.
Is Spice and Wolf one of the few series where the Christmas Cake wins?
>>148774618
Fairly sure that Holo would have literally torn out Lawrence's throat if he ever thought of her as a Christmas cake pre-second trip to Lenos.
>>148772687
I wouldn't necessarily say that the writing is excellent, but it's a lot better than most other Light Novels out there. I've read more LN's than I'd care to admit, and to be quite honest, they're all almost borderline fan-fiction tier writing. Spice and Wolf isn't a literary masterpiece by any means, but it's the pretty much the only LN I've read that could actually pass as an average novel for young adults.
>>148773130
>Drunken Wolf Translations
Amateur and terrible. The characters and the plot come off very retarded and the whole prose couldn't be any drier. I waited years to read this until recently when I got the Yen Press epubs.
>>148773779
>since I'm not a professional editor or translator.
You forgot to add that you haven't read more than 10 books without pictures in them in your life. Nor that you are not very observant either. Not every sentence is split with a line break (>>148773284), you blind fool.
>>148775275
Just checked, the only Yen Press epubs I've seen are from 1 to 12 from bakabt. Where do you get the rest, senpai?
Speaking of accuracy, can someone get the original Japanese 15th volume to compare the first paragraph in the prologue?
Yen Press (vol. XV; Prologue):
>Farewells were too brief. Lawrence’s feelings on the matter came from experience.
>No matter how anguished the moment, the actual act of farewell was over in but an instant. Like drawing the arrow of a bow, there was greater peril in gradually prolonging it out of fear. Hold your breath and go. Everyone knows how it will end.
DWT (vol. XV; Prologue):
>Goodbyes are simple things, at least as far as Lawrence saw it. No matter how upsetting a parting was, it was just another event in life. Much like removing an arrow from one’s body. Hesitating due to a fear of pain would be even more dangerous. One had to do it quickly, in one move, for the pain to subside as quickly as possible.
The bit about drawing the arrow/removing an arrow from the body is kinda jarring as they'd mean 2 entirely different types of peril. In the first case, the string could snap, meaning you could get hurt or you couldn't shoot any more arrows; in the other one, it's about the risk of having the wound fester.

>NEW YORK, NY (10/17/2016) – Yen Press, LLC, manga and graphic novel publisher, announced two new light novels by Isuna Hasekura, author of SPICE AND WOLF at his Spotlight Panel at NYCC!
>Prior to the Spotlight Panel on Isuna Hasekura, author of SPICE AND WOLF, Yen Press revealed the addition of two brand new light novels to their publishing schedule, continuing the popular SPICE AND WOLF series. Kurt Hassler also announced that for the first time the SPICE & WOLF light novels will be available digitally in English! Yen Press will be releasing all 17 volumes of SPICE AND WOLF as eBooks!
Gosick has good writing too. It helps that the author has experience writing serious literature in various genres as well as LNs.
>>148773284
I remember seeing these types of sentence breaks in the writing from authors in the west. Though there' usually averages 2-3 lines before each break, but they're rather common during sections when the characters are talking to others. The Bartimaeus sequence by Jonathan Stroud is a good example. I only read the main trilogy back in high school, the literary writing was beyond anything I had encountered and I was above the average grade reading level. Fewer people though are able to appreciate them because you have people who can't even pronounce words correctly nearing adulthood though.
>>148776588

>>148777564
>look glossy
Well, yeah. Luxury editions usually don't have shitty grade paper. From what I've seen online, it's really good, at least it's better than most hard-cover editions.
The publisher probably felt like a mate finish would easily get stained by the cheetos-covered greasy fingers of weebs.
Why is it called Spice & Wolf?
Kino no tabi, Haruhi, and Baccano are better.

>>148776427
>medieval europe
>unusual setting
>wolf girl
>non-standard character
>>148772687
What is 12k?
>>148777943
The scale is that of a somewhat more realistic European setting, where there's no bullshit like muh thousand knights corp, mansions painted in gold, 100 blacksmiths per town, etc. The point he was probably trying to make was that it focuses on a smaller spectrum of daily medieval life, around trading and merchants, rather than soldiers, wizards, aristocrats or priests.
>wolf girl
Actually a wolf god. She kinda acts like a figure that's lived for a thousand years and not some silly tsundere best girl trying to win in a harem.
>>148777545
I wonder just how bad their warehouses are and how much they underpay the people who work there
>>148777943
For LNs it is an unusual setting, what with all the isekai fantasy worlds. Spice and Wolf is mostly realistic, other than the pagan gods. And i was talking more about the personalities, neither Lawrence nor Holo are generic LN character archetypes
>>148774618
Chobits.
>>148778569
I remember reading this story how they deducted the 10 minutes or so it took for their workers to make it out of their warehouses' security checkpoints when they went out for breaks or lunch, coming and going. It wasn't until it came out that they made an about face and promised to not do that anymore. Having worked in similar setups, that's as cutthroat as it gets. No surprise their workers would pass the shit on to consumers in order to damage Amazon's reputation in order to get back at them. It's like that saying "Don't talk shit about the people who handle your food." someone is going to pay for it eventually.
>>148777818
I don't want toilet paper tier, but glossy is just one shit level above that.
When I realized I couldn't get a limited edition one I cancelled, but I would still want a hardcover eventually if it's good quality.
>>148779369
The book is full of illustrations, and personally, I think glossy looks much better for colored illustrations. Depends on the gloss tho. I don't like the ones that look wet.
>>148779369
>>148779902
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvE_OPN9hbM
Doesn't look glossy, with the "wet, plastic" appearance that sticks to the finger when you turn the pages. It looks very good.
>>148779369
Poor unlearned boy. It seems like you've never opened up an encyclopedia or a course book in your life, and that you don't care about the quality of the craftsmanship of a bound volume. Thank God you didn't order it. Cast pearls before swine, etc. It's not a fucking monitor, you twat. You shouldn't care about glossy paper, and they can't just put only a few pages of illustration paper for the drawings it has and leave the rest in some other quality in a 900 page book.
>>148778613
>what with all the isekai fantasy worlds
Which are all based off medieval Europe
