>A man can be destroyed but not defeated.
What did Hemingway mean by this?
One gun, one bullet, and whiskey, neat.
Not anime.
>>148770481
As far as my understanding goes, it's like cutting grass but not it's roots. You might have cut the grass(defeat) but not its roots then you truly didn't defeat it, since it will grow back once more. You have to uproot it (destroy). or maybe I'm just being retarded.

>>148770652

>>148770608
No, it just means that the will and the spirit of a man can be unbreakable even if the man may fail to achieve victory.
Within the story itself the old man failed to catch anything for a long time, and even when he did make a catch it was eaten away by sharks.
But he persisted because of his spirit.
Likewise you could imagine a man that will never admit defeat until you kill him.
I don't think Hemingway meant for it to be interpreted this extremely, but we should remember that he was actively involved in the Spanish civil war, so maybe he did.
>>148770686
but that's just water
>>148770343
I want you to hook up with that girl. Anyone know if that happens later on in the manga?
>>148770693
>Likewise you could imagine a man that will never admit defeat until you kill him.
The grass analogy works too.
Mimosa, no ice.
I got nothing better to do than sip a fucking afternoon drink at 11 and argue with strangers on the internet about why one anime girl is better than another.
>>148770744
The grass has no will. It just grows until it dies.
The point is to underline the beauty of courage and perseverance.

No joke. I still hear it in my head whenever I'm shaking a cocktail. Soundtrack aside, though, the manga is better.
Also, I wish we had more chill classy bars in my area, it's all just trashy clubs and sports bars around here.

I went to a bar straight out of Bartender once, a little place in the back streets of Gion, invited there by a cool old Japanese business dude who I guess really wanted to practice his English, even at the cost of picking up a whole bar tab that had to have been immense.
He ordered us a few rounds of Grand Old Parr, and in that setting, it was excellent. It'll always be the drink that springs to mind when I think of Japanese bars.
Funny thing, by the way - He never told us what he did or who he was, and I saw many people give him business cards without him giving one back. I wondered abut it for years, and then a few years ago I was reading the Bartender manga and it mentioned that Old Parr is famous as the drink of choice for Japanese politicians. Really makes you wonder, huh?
>>148771664
>Plymouth Gin
Holy shit, I didn't expect to find anybody on /a/ with such based tastes. I'm more of a whiskey guy, but Plymouth is the shit.
I may have to run out and get myself some, come to think of it. A martini sounds nice.
>>148770686
>>148770842
You know, as much shit as American beer gets, I've traveled the world quite a bit, and found that cheap local swill isn't much better in other places, aside from maybe Germany. I hated most of the Japanese beer I had in Japan, for example, even when it was stuff I don't mind in the US.
One rum martinez please.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxRzzm-mjCE
>>148772014
Germany's got quite a few cheap shit beer brands as well, from what I hear.
>>148772014
The mass produced beer isn't that good here. The micro breweries all over have quite a good taste however. I mean in USA.
>>148772014
Thanks man. Gin is my game. Plymouth is one of my favorites, but London No. 1 is close to being my favorite. Botanical are nice too such as Uncle Vals, but I have yet to try more. Need to go get some more this weekend.

Oh yeah, I was talking about the macro domestics, not the microbrew stuff. We've got awesome microbrews, I'm actually about to open a Sierra Nevada right now. (Although maybe SN has gotten big enough lately to not count as a micro.)
>>148772317
Do you drink all the time? What do you do with the cool bottles like those?
>>148772388
I don't drink an insane amount, but maybe a cocktail or a couple of beers most evenings.
This is actually the first bottle I've saved in ages, not sure what I'm gonna do with it. Usually I just throw liquor bottles in the recycling but this one is too nice to trash. It's well made enough to use as a decanter, but not sure what I'd put in it.

I'm generally not great with gin myself, I pretty much only drink it as part of a martini. Without vermouth to tame it, it always hits my pallete a little bit too hard. Plymouth is the only real exception for me. (Plus I'm the kind of booze hipster who likes that it was the traditional choice for martinis.)
Best song coming through.

I don't have enough to spend on alcohol but luckily I can get Drambiue for under $30 by the storenear the projects. So far I'm sticking with Canadian Club and rarely Jack Daniels. I might try to find Philadelphia whiskey since it's cheap and pretty good from what I heard but I'm open to all sorts of them.
>>148773744
It really depends on the drink. I'm not a big fan of what are typically called "mixed drinks" - i.e. alcohol mixed with a strong-tasting non-alcoholic beverage - but cocktails are great, and some of them are quite easy to make, too.
I drink a lot of simplified Old Fashioneds, just bourbon, a couple shakes of bitters, a bit of sugar, and some soda water, and it makes the booze last longer and taste better. Martinis aren't hard at all either, especially if you stir and don't shake.

Have you not read Akagi? There's a reason why One Outs is called Baseball Akagi.
Any of you ever make it to Tokyo, you owe it to yourself to check out this bar I frequented for a month or so. Me and a friend lived in Tokyo for a month, kind of a after-college vacation. Stayed in the Ogikubo ward. There is a bar there called Zyzzyx. After the street in Las Vegas. Tiny place, classy as fuck. Sells sandwiches at lunch, hosts drunk salarymen at night. My friend and I hold the record for most beers drunk in one night for that July 4th, which we spent with three salary men who kind of spoke english and were kind enough to drink with us.
Its the full deal, semi-formal wear for the bartender, nice liquor selection, vinyl records on play. If any of you ever make it there I die fulfilled. I picture nirvana and that bar is there.

Oh, derp, Sierra Nevada. Was thinking whisky.
Yeah, it's not bad at all. I'll probably pick some up when it hits the local liquor store.
>>148776095
Harmony, or 12? If it's for 12, I guess I'm fining the nearest Costco as soon as I can.
I've found that most Japanese whiskys are good, but vastly overpriced compared to their Scottish/American/French cousins.
>>148776159
Yep, from Sierra. It's what helped me develop some interest in IPA's
>>148776194
I've found both 12 and Harmony at Costco. Unless I found harmony at bevmo... I disagree about Japanese whiskys being overpriced, miles better than a lot of bottles in the same price. The exception being The 12 year old Hakashu by Suntory. That shit is just ok.
>>148776328
Most local places I've seen are asking $60+ for Nikka Taketsuru/Pure Malt, let alone any Japanese whiskys with an age statement. I can't fathom paying that much for a blend when a bottle of Glenkinchie or Highland Park 12 years are $20 less.
>>148770343
Water, please.
>>148776194
12. The bottle I posted in >>148772317 was from Costco, though I think it might've been $55 or $60, not $50, still a good deal though.
I've seen a few of the other Suntory whiskies there too, including some higher ends, but usually balk at the price, even if it's a good deal.
>>148776328
I'm a big IPA fan lately. I know it's kind of the cliche hip thing, but I like the character and the "taste kick" if you know what I mean.
I haven't tried too many Japanese whiskies, to be honest, I'd really like to do so though. I always stop in front of the Yamazaki when I'm at the Japanese grocery store and then tell myself it's a bad use of money, but maybe I'll get myself some for Christmas or something. (And honestly, a bottle of badass whisky isn't really any dumber of an expenditure than plastic figures of animu girls.)

Thats my shit, dude. But I actually recall seeing Takesuru for almost 70. I haven't been shopping for Japanese whiskys for a bit so you might be right about it being expensive.
>>148776545
I hated them at first but starting from a nice base really helped me discern flavors and enjoy that "kick". Magic hat Imperial Pale Lager is fucking delicious if you ever see it. I haven't seen many Japanese whiskys here other than hibiki, the hakashu and the bad-ass motherfucker I have in my picture. If you find it, buy it immediately. The best I've had.

>>148776732
If you like Highland Park, you'll probably like Taketsuru. That said, it's def not worth $70. More like the $40-50 range. I'd peg Hibiki Harmony in that range too, though it's not as much to my taste.
>>148776732
They actually have that at the Japanese supermarket I go to.
Also, I once saw Nikka Coffey Grain or whatever it's called at Costco, still kicking myself for not buying it now that I've seen what it normally costs. (Don't remember the exact Costco price but it was a similar discount to what they do on Hibiki.)
