Well, I guess that's the end of that.
>>
You can basically just use HS to keep track of anime releases nowdays, there are usually less than 5 shows per season that aren't being simulcast.
>>
I don't remember ever using Baka updates for anime.

Just the manga updates
>>
Thank god it was only baka-updates. If it was MangaUpdates I would kill myself.
>>
>>148595431
>work and new families

I wonder how old they are? Probably mid 30s at this point.

Kinda sad to see them go.
>>
The end of the digisub age. Crunchy stole subs and got rewarded
>>
>>148595431
Well thank fuck lord I can still check the manga updates
>>
a) Were they still active?
b) Farewell, comrades.
>>
>>148595431
Jesus christ anon, don't scare me like this.
>>
I didn't even know baka-updates was for anime
>>
It's fine for me, as long as Manga updates still up.
Since MAL manga division is suck for tracking and shit.
>>
>>148595756
same
>>
>>148595431
As long as mangaupdates doesn't go down then it's fine. You don't even need the anime updates
>>
>>148595431
Almost shit myself until I read that last line
>>
>>148595431
It's kind of expected since fansub are basically dead.
Also, I haven't used it in at least 7 years.
>>
I give one year to manga updates.
>>
>>148595756
>>148596391
They already bent over backwards for Crunchyroll by censoring 1 centimeter x centimeter covers of manga tanks despite the fact 1cm x 1cm covers are covered under Fair Use.

If they gave a shit about the fandom, they release the source code and dump the entire base in case they ever get shut down.
>>
>>148596626
>fansub are basically dead
w-why you say that?
>>
>>148596866
he works for crunchy
>>
>>148596866
Only thing we get nowadays is Commie or their lite versions.
>>
>>148596866
Fansubs aren't dead.

Crunchyroll never subs OVAs for example.

Anime movies are still getting subbed as well.
>>
>>148595431
>2002 was 14 years ago
>>
>>148596636
Why?
>>
>>148597095
They are in comparison to its peak years.

True, there'll always be guys fansubbing series out there, but the community will most likely never be as prolific as it was before; unless picking up old, forgotten, rare series becomes a "thing".
>>
>>148596636
Unlike Baka, MU actually has a more active community. Crunchy and its Burger friends can't hog all the manga for themselves after all, even if they wanted to.

The way it'd go down is if it kept bending over to the suits.
>>
>>148595431
>Baka Updates
I stopped using them, because they weren't current.

Also: All hail Nyaa's Broadcatching.
>>
I stopped using them years ago,
but they were so helpful when i was first starting so sad to see them go.

Not him and I can't remember exactly but 2012 for example. Just try to remember a time when you didn't have to rally on HS.

Okay, how is this even worth boasting about?

In 2002, AniDB already existed, and did everything they were planning on doing, except it also stored file hashes and download links.

>>
Not really surprising. I could see baka tsuki/manga, AB, nyaa and other "old" anime sites going away in few years or so.
>>
>>148599951
At least one of AB or BakaBT will survive for old series.

Nyaa will be fine unless everyone migrates to another site like TT.

As long as there is a need, the sites will be around. The issue with fansubs is that there really isn't a need aside from specials, OVAs, and small numbers of series. As long as CR and Funi don't sub them, there will be a demand but it just doesn't take as many people.

A lot of torrent sites have been shutted down lately though. My ISP has even blocked access to some torrent sites. I just hope they don't care about anime.

Then I'd have to use IRC again to download anime. I had to do it last year because the army wouldn't let me torrent.
>>
>>148599452

Yes, they sub it themselves. But two groups doing actual fansubbing in one season is nothing compared to the years ~2007-2012 when BU was actually useful.

Who gives a shit about the anime version. Forgot it even existed.

>>
Anyone know who KickAssAnime group is?
It seems that they were big fish in '00 (since most of my classic anime are subbed by them).
>>
>>148600495
>something as iconic as 999 can't even be subbed in this shambling corpse of an era
Naw.
>>148600408
It's not like I don't agree with you. Just telling you the fact of what happened.
>>
>>148600438

Yeah, I haven't used baka updates in years. I can't even remember the page layout. I usually use anidb when I want to find information about anime now.

I don't really mind horriblesubs doing all the shows, I think that all in all it's better for me getting everything an hour after airing than having a perfect translation. I usually just downloaded the first fansub available in my days, be it gg, commie or FFF. Except Hadena I guess.
>>
>>148600321
>A lot of torrent sites have been shutted down lately though
Good, this puts more pressure into developing decentralized alternatives

>If it was MangaUpdates I would kill myself.

OP certainly had me scared for a moment. In all my years in the community, I've never come across a site as comprehensive as Manga-Updates.

Made me realize how the most basic information about manga and mangaka would be infinitely harder to find without this one site.
>>

Fansubs? What is this?
>>
>>148600876
>I was about to fire up the internet archive and export as much of my backlog as I could manage. Was going to be hours of work.

Happy to see someone out there is willing to put in the work should something happen. I'm having flashbacks to 2015 when we lost a couple critical sites with no alternatives. Despite the size of the community, we still have to many points of failure that would be devastating if lost entirely and unexpectedly.

>>148600942
>You can't even find manga sales on MU and the layout is terrible

True, but find me a site with even a quarter of the information of MU, and is regularly updated.
>>
>>148600846
>Made me realize how the most basic information about manga and mangaka would be infinitely harder to find without this one site.
Actually, you can find much more on the wiki alone. Except for rare cases when some fan added a bits of info from the interviews and such.
Too bad there's no decent alternatives, MU is such a shitty site with a bunch of retards for admins.
>>
>>148601343
Its shit like this that makes me lament the social structure of this place. If we were a cunthair more organized we could handle all these things ourselves. Oh well.

Read it and be depressed anon
http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.ca/2015/04/the-death-of-internet-pre-mortem.html
>>
>>148601430
Looks to be that way. The only things to survive will be financially self-sufficient communities run by an easily successable council that makes decisions. Situations like with 4chan where a buyer and owner is needed will slowly die off one by one like YTMND, or continue to be bought out by holding companies, like what happened to YouTube and Reddit.

However you slice it the future of the internet is and has always been terrible and inevitable. It's best if you don't think to hard about it. I figured this out years ago and have never been more depressed about being right. Enjoy your life online while you can. The worst is yet to come.
>>
>>148600574
I just don't even understand how that could happen, they're on funimation's radar and the only issue they had was that they were using covers for shows they had licensed?

It really feels like we are living in a decline. Every extra hoop that people need to jump through to get content knocks a zero off the population of the community.
>>
>>148601429
If it ever goes down you can expect some anon to be the one to pick up the slack. Hell, if Manga-Updates ever releases their database I'd be willing to front the costs for a server on a better version of the site.
/a/ is in charge of lots of things, it's just that if there is an alternative they won't bother. That's why it took the crashing of that one website I already forgot for us to get madokami. Pomf (and clones), most archives, etc are run by anon.

Those are all pretty ephemeral and minor services though. Who will fucking host /a/? I mean without factoring in the other alternatives like old 7. That one's not run by an anon. It's run by a tripfag. :^) No but really, he's got a decent history as both a programmer for hire and a freelance contractor.
