Show is mostly respected just because it's edgy, just because it performs this crazy twist on the magical girl formula. The novel art style is nice, though.

The characterization is just super weak, the plot feels totally arbitrary because it's so distinctly devoid of setup / payoff, foreshadowing, etc, and because none of it feels grounded due to the absolutely zero atmosphere / world-building, it's incredibly difficult to feel any kind of engagement with the story.

The biggest flaw is definitely the weak characters, though. If you're reading this and thinking "wtf, I thought the characters were good," then you don't actually know what characterization means. Here's a hit: The character with the most characterization was Madoka's mom. That's how weak the central cast was. To be fair, the characters were all a little stronger in the movie, though I was so not at all engaged with the plot of it that I can't really comment.

The entire concept of "we're now monsters, much drama" falls apart because the characters literally had to be told what happened to them, meaning that being a witch is strictly a benefit because you keep all your feelings and human thoughts 100% in tact but are also effectively immortal. Way to look a gift horse in the mouth you dumb idiots (to be fair the story actively points out that preteen girls are stupid, so I suppose at least they're honest)

The entire concept of this show being some sort of deconstruction of magical girl shows is bullshit because to make a deconstruction you have to take common tropes of a genre and take them to their logical conclusions. Madoka completely rewrites the "rules" of how magical girls work and then says WOW THIS IS MESSED UP RIGHT. I suppose this is more a complaint about the fanbase, but it's hard to divorce the show from the people that treat it like the evangelion of magical girl shows or something retarded.

Also, the show spends way too much time focusing on sayaka when she's a right cunt, leaving all the focus on characters that are actually interesting and likeable for single episodes or expanded universe stuff.
