why do we pretend that this is good
the same reason people pretend modern art is good
>I don't like it so that means everyone else is pretending to like it
Abara was better imo
I guess I can see why "cyberpunk" gush so much over it though
>>148491404
Literally what?
Because it is
>>148491404
It _is_ pretty good. 6 books instead of, what, 10? Bigger format and good paper.
>>148491404
>implying /a/ has a consensus about something
>implying everyone fakes liking something because you don't
you're kind of a cunt but in case you still wanted an actual answer the art is probably the main selling point. its immensely detailed and really speaks to the imagination. the story and world building although very cryptic are actually worked out very well.
>>148492128
I like Blame! But the art is the worst part about it. Nihei couldn't draw for shit back then, he couldn't even point two eyes in the same direction
>>148492957
The art only felt bad with humans, everything else looked really good.
>>148491404
Because it is.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others don't. Why even bother creating such a dumb thread.
>>148492957
I love the setting. Maybe not the humans so much but I think the setting is amazing.
>>148491632
This
>>148492957
I like most of Nihei's work because his architectural/environmental drawing really tickles my fancy.
>Biomega was en route to becoming Nihei's best work
>but then spaceworm
what the fuck man
>>148493256
He stopped giving a shit.
>>148492957
That doesn't make the art shit. It's absolutely amazing. No other manga creates mood with art alone as well as Blame does.
http://1000toys.jp/products/detail.php?product_id=9
speaking about Nihei
anyone buying this?
>>148493256
I'm still mad. Biomega could have been a masterpiece but at some point Nihei just went "fuck everything".
>>148492957
That's kind of a weird thing about Blame!, the architecture and world looked rather good, even the silicon creatures but as soon as something had a human face it dropped in quality pretty quickly
>>148493369
Since there were basically no conversations in 80% of the manga it relied on that
Your point stands true though, the vast megastructures give off a really eerie atmosphere
One thing besides architecture and tone that Nihei never gets enough credit for is how good he is at paneling, especially for action scenes.
A lot of manga cannot draw two characters fighting without resorting to hackery, I'm talking about shit like
>In the middle of punching each other I'm going to speak a full sentence to you and you're going to reply
>Thought bubbles explaining what I'm trying to do for the reader
>Action is conveyed through lines attached to moving body parts because otherwise you'd have no idea what direction movement is happening in
Nihei is amazingly disciplined about this stuff. His fights are simple and clean and actually engaging to read. When he's at his best you're reading still panels with no dialogue but you can tell exactly what's going on.
The Killy Schiff fight where they're fighting in darkness is a gem among manga fight scenes.
>Implying it isn't
>>148493651
this
the action scene and suit design in Abara and Sidonia was so good
I read that the new english translation is shit compared to the old one. Would it be worth trying to collect the original Tokyopop release instead?
>>148491404
>muh cyberpunk
>muh architecture
>muh mood
>muh show not tell
it's fucking shit and not even half as interesting as sidonia.
>>148493651
>The Killy Schiff fight
One of the best he's ever done?
>>148493743
Planetes, huh?
>>148494169
yep
>>148494226Picking my first book tomorrow.
>>148493903
trivializing things with "muh" is a great meme but could you also expand the arguments for your standpoint for the sake of discussion?
>>148494266
did you read the scans ? You should do so and buy the complete edition if you have 1 in your country
>>148491404
Why do you pretend that you're not a faggot?
>>148494327
No and no.
It only just got released so not like I have much choice.
I did download the anime, but only seen a few eps (not more like 3 I'm affraid).
>inb4 turbopleb
It's not like I didn't like it, I just have problems continuing watching/doing shit in a series or whatever.I'll keep buying manga even if I eventually get back to the anime.
Cheers.
>>148494422
No problem m8, take your time, I'm just curious, where do you live for Planetes to be released just yet ?
>>148494508
It starts with POL
and ends with LAND
>>148491404
Fuck off you insecure manchild.
>>148493374
>no female version
>>148494559
Speaking of, how do you feel about the fact that they changed the front font to this bullshit?
>>148494844
I had literally no idea.
>>148491404
We don't.
>>148491404
Pre-ordered volume 3 already
So how is the remake?
Why "Kyrii?"
>>148491404
We have to pretend we like something for appearances sake.
It's a bretty good art book
>>148496913
Did he redraw blame? I don't remember character not looking ugly.
>>148498800
Well that's how you pronounce his name in Japanese.
Kyrii's name is written as 霧亥 (きりい) in Japanese.
The characters for his name are as follows:
霧 (きり) means "fog" or "mist".
亥 (い) means "boar", and this specific Kanji for "boar" refers to "the Boar", which is the twelfth sign of the Chinese Zodiac.
Killy was the fan-translation, while Kyrii is closer to the original Japanese version.
>>148492957
(you)
>>148491404
There are people who pretend that Gantz is good
This is now a battlestations thread.
>>148500518
gantz is stupid and self-contradicting and hackey and i absolutely love it.
>>148499384
The covers were redrawn Sidonia-style.
>>148500518
Gantz was incredible until part 3 and the ending where oku decided he couldn't be bothered
