Haruhi. That's literally it. They had the largest ratings for an anime in history. And all the shows since have used that fanbase. No show has gotten as big of ratings as Haruhi. But if even 1/3 the fans of Haruhi watch the latest boring KyoAni show, it's a success.

Kyoani shows always make me want to actually discuss anime, as in talking about character development, motivations, characterization, and visuals.
No other studio can consistently make me do that. Kyoani's characters are always extremely interesting except Phantom World or Keyshit

Yui is not a complex character. If anything, she's extremely simple - to the point that she becomes a "mirror" for the audience (ESL, sorry if that doesn't make any sense). The audience don't think much about Yui and the rest of the band, but rather, reflect upon themselves.

Nothing else can be more important when the writing and story boarding is boring as hell. I honestly don't even know why people like Hibike so much. You can pretty much guess how an event is going to unfold before it happens.

And when something big does happen it doesn't change the narrative a whole lot. Majority of anime is like this and that's what makes them boring. I mean, cool last episdoe we got a fan service episode. Which yeah, makes my dick hard but ultimately it was a shallow and cheap way to bait idiots. Nothing major happened. Nothing major will probably happen till it ends besides some very mild and predictable drama.

Are you talking about kyoto animation here? Because all the imagery, even though it's beautiful, it's not "on your face" everything is presented at the same rythm as the story is presented.

As much as I shit on SHAFT, I at least respect the fact that they've been able to produce some quality works using a multitude of different premises.

Any time Kyoani even slightly attempts to leave their high school drama comfort zone like with KnK, it's a total disaster.
