Have you ever wondered how elusive Goku is to his friends? They see him like once every couple of years.
The only time he's ever been reachable is after the Buu saga ended, and maybe that one time he settled down to train for the androids for a year, but everyone was probably too busy to hang out at the time. Deep down they probably see him as a fucking legend.

In real life, that would be considered a pretty terrible childhood by most, but you have to look at how Goku felt - he was a happy kid and enjoyed his childhood. Very likely a break from reality there, of course, but yeah.

Gohan, on the other hand, had a very stressful and frightening childhood from the day Radditz showed up, all the way to the defeat of Cell (and the aftermath of that was really sad as well). If this wasn't a child-aimed shonen manga where trauma doesn't really exist, Gohan would be incredibly fucked up.

I agree, and it's something that I like and think is well done. Gohan's a lot more socially normal than Goku, but he's his father's son. He has a similar disposition and temperament in peacetime, like during the school episodes in early Buu.
