I would liken Kimi no Na wa to painting on a giant piece of shit. In which the shit represents the story and characters. You can make it look as beautiful as you want, but the basic structure of everything that you are trying to obscure behind the colors and animation is still just that - shit.

What is it about this movie and Shinkai that triggers the contr/a/rians so much? Whether you like it or not, it is objectively an expertly crafted movie and the majority of people who have seen it love it.

If The Wind Rises and Miyazaki's retirement signaled the end of an era in anime, Kimi no Na wa. signals the beginning of a new era.

Shinkai is now officially one of the big dogs in the anime industry and will seriously revolutionize it.

With Miyazaki retired, the driving forces of the anime industry are now Shinkai, Hideaki Anno, and Akiyuki Shinbo. If Satoshi Kon were still alive, he'd be on this list too.
