What's represented as lines in drawings are boundaries we perceive through differences in color or light and shadow. Not drawing lines everywhere you can imagine them to be because you have certain preconceptions about how things look, is something I'd argue a good artist should be able to do. In this case it's a stylization of the fact that shadows tend to be darker at the corner of your mouth.

It's stylisation to imply the lips pressing together since they're soft and deform when pressure is applied. The gap lets you cheat in the appearance of the third dimension, you can do it less stylised and just use lineweight to give depth, the gap does look a bit silly desu
