>>148404843
That video has nothing to do with the kana. That video is about the hordes that spend months upon months on texts that should take two at most. It's completely incomparable.
And yes, two days to ”””learn””” the kana is a ridiculous standard by any acceptable definition of ”learn”. Familiarizing is not learning.
>>148404976
Literally completely unrelated to the topic at hand, kill yourself
>>148404990
That may be what the video is about, but the advice applies to everything. For kana, for vocabulary, and for grammar, you are making a mistake if you try to understand it to 100% before moving on to more advanced material.
If you can read the kana somewhat accurately and maybe right 5 of them, that's good enough to start reading words and basic sentences. You can keep practicing how to write them on the side, but what you don't want to do is spend one week doing nothing but kana before allowing yourself to read a sentence.
This is the same reason that doing RTK before vocab is stupid.

be honest anon do you really think 9 hours of study over 3 days isn't enough to be familiar with the kana?
>>148405821
The meme is learn, not familiarize
>>148405873
And my entire point, if you were capable of reading without letting your butthurt interfere with your emotions, was that when people say you should "learn" the kana before moving on, what they really mean is something closer to familiarize.
>>148405440
Going to have to get used to that because it looks entirely normal and is far more squashed together in most contexts you will come across it outside of Anki with custom fonts and sizes.

>>148406545
It's because the general amount of 'ink' is so high it makes the component look like another
I'm not the one that called it horrendous though
>>148406545
>It's wider than the bottom two horizontal strokes and narrower than the second from top horizontal stroke.
That probably didn't make sense. I mean that the box shape is wider than the two bottom horizontal strokes of the four single horizontal lines, yet narrower than the long second from the top horizontal line, of 言.
>>148406578
>It's because the general amount of 'ink' is so high it makes the component look like another
You've lost me. That aside, which other competent does the 言 of 警 look like?
Is that what you were referring to?
>>148406656
I actually learned this particular word in display font form first so I can tell you exactly why it was kind of problematic. It took me like three weeks to realize the component at the bottom of 警 was 言 at all. As far as I was concerned it could have been 喜 or 口+三 or any number of things, because the top half blended into the other components and the bottom half was so stretched that it wasn't obvious that it was the base of 言. In fact the moment I realized exactly what components made up the character was when I installed a textbook font for shits and giggles.
With everything I've learned textbook font first since, I've had no problems with the components, and reading "distorted" fonts just takes like a second every time I'm reintroduced to a character I already learned with a textbook font, since I always know how the character is constructed formally and not just an approximation of its shape like "a combish thing on the bottom with some vertical lines at the very bottom and two radicals in the top corners"
>>148406887
>It took me like three weeks to realize the component at the bottom of 警 was 言 at all.
Without trying to sound like a dick, that really doesn't sound like a font issue.
>>148406967
It's because I always got the card right, so I basically never actually saw it. The distortion makes it so you can't tell at a glance unless you're already use to that radical being distorted that way.
>>148406039
Thanks for the link, anon
>>148406999
>The distortion
It's not distorted, that's how the character appears in print, on signs, in manga, etc. You've just going to have to get used to the fact that characters take up a set space and some characters are more involved than others. Do something like RTK if that sort of things keeps being an issue.

There are some days where I'm just so fucking tired of anki. I know that it'll drain my ability to focus for the next 45~ minutes after I finish it, and the time that I spend with it is a complete chore. I wish that it wasn't such a horrible idea to say "screw it", delete the program from my computer, and make reading, listening, typing, and speaking my only forms of study.
And I know from experience (namely, having done it) that the above is indeed a horrible idea. Anki is by far the best way to stockpile and review vocabulary until you reach a point where you can glean the meaning of most unknown words that you encounter entirely from context. In other words, almost native level.

>Toshiaki (としあき) means it used to be a default name of Nijiura board. When Nijiura board launched at the first time, a default name was Nanashi san (ななしさん). One day a guy named "Toshiaki" claimed to upload some hentai Doujinshi (同人誌), like "Kaiten sommelier 15 kaiten" (回転ソムリエ 15回転) and trolled persistently: meanwhile, because of anonymous BBS, other users used the name "Toshiaki" as well, and even teased original Toshiaki, therefore tons of Toshiaki increased and got tangled. Following the fed of Toshiaki, the administrator adopt Toshiaki as the default name by a mischievous idea, then Nijiura users are formalized as Toshiaki. Moreover, this fed brought about some names derived from Toshiaki: somebody who post a new thread is called Sureaki (スレあき, "Sure" comes from "thread"); female users are called Joshiaki (女子あき, 女子 joshi means a girl), shortly after the names became common names entirely.

>>148411061
You need a lot more than that to know as many as a native speaker, but of course you learn most words without anki unless you are terrible at guessing or autistic about adding everything to anki.
It's just that it's better to learn words that you have some context for and some interest in. So if you're at the point in Core where words stop "seeming" useful and interesting, and if you're reading/watching enough to mine your quota, then you might as well just learn the words you mine instead. They'll be fresh in your mind since you just came across them in context. It's like you have cute eroge girls speaking the line trying to help you memorize the word every time the anki card comes up.

Is learning English as hard for native Japanese as learning Japanese for native English speakers? Seems like a lot of Japanese people know English at least to some extent but pretty much nobody I know in real life knows Japanese, even my uncle who was married to a Japanese woman for like 5 years.
>>148414275
No idea if this is actually objective but I get a medical/technical feel from 眼 rather than 目
>>148414467
Because English is used worldwide across many if not all countries and Japanese is exclusive to Japan?
As for the first question I'd say it's easier for Japanese to learn English than for us to learn Japanese, but only slightly.
>>148414467
It's probably equally hard, difference is that English is mandatory learning for Japanese schools so they get a head start.
>>148414467
I'd say English is harder for Japs to learn just because of pronunciation, English has many sounds that don't exist in native Japanese
>>148414529
>English has many sounds that don't exist in native Japanese
It's true the other way around too, we're only approximating in many cases.
>>148414555
The amount of sounds that exist in Japanese is tiny compared to most languages though
>>148414555
It's probably easier for us to find reasonable approximations though, due to having more sounds to pick from in general. Japanese has a fairly small set of possible sounds.
Also English has some sounds like th or r which are not very common in other languages from what I've heard.
English and French have too many vowels

>>148417508
It gets easier as you actually read stuff. You should try to devote most of your time to this with stuff like Anki or textbooks being secondary. Don't worry if it's hard at first or if you need to look up every other word, your mind will pick up the most commonly used concepts faster than you'd expect.
How it worked out for me, anyway. Also I'd recommend you wait on grammar study until you're about to start reading actual material, since it reinforces it so much better if you can go in straight after your lesson and see the grammar points you just studied used in a real-world context.

Kanji and reading / English?
only kanji?
only reading?
I feel like Some words I need to practice reading the kanji, and others i need to practice recognizing a word from how its read since the kanji would give away the meaning.
For completely new words, do you make 2 different cards for the same word because of this?

>>148419823
I'm reading Harry Potter in Japanese now since I know the story and its relatively low reading level.
The thrill of learning new words is the very reason I keep reading. Why give up when you are actually learning? If you could read it already you'd be fluent and no need to practice.
I actually see all those words and grammar lined up in textbook listings put to use. Makes it feel less like academic study and more like real, human expression. Helps me remember far more than looking at english explanations every time i forget
Which anki deck should someone just starting out be using? I've been using the Core2k TaeKim one from the guide.
>>148420604
Oh come on. Russia is not better.
How does anon learn vocab, particularly compound kanji? I have been too reliant on (kklc/rtk) mnemonics for learning a single kanji, but when I have to memorized vocabs from textbook for example, I'm having difficulty remembering it (reading sample sentences help a little bit). Any suggestion? Or is rote memorization the only way?

>>148420548

>>148421082
>I'm really not sure how much artistic license is used with this stuff.
There's no one right answer to that. You'll appeal to different people with different translation styles.
>>148420548
Also bear in mind that if you put the readings on the front you'll start noticing a shitload of homophones, some of them from contexts so far apart that you would never normally have the chance to confuse them.
>>148421082
What you do is localize as faithfully as possible, and when a good localization of the meaning and intent of the content is not possible, you have to localize the intent. Otherwise you get shit like the umineko translation. Which, ironically, is better than the original specifically because the entire translation is so incredibly unnatural.

>>148426451
>anime language is not real language
W-wait, what?
You're telling me real Japanese girls won't say onii-chan to me in a squeaky voice?
What am I even learning this language for then?
3DPDは好きですか?
The answer isC
I got it wrong though because at first I didn't think a noun could be もちろん. Is this one of those cut-off sentences where the full one would say something like もちろんいいですけど? Or is there something I'm not getting here.
>>148427455
>The answer isC
please don't lie on the internet.
>夢見がち
I don't get this phrase. Saw it getting translated as 'romantic' a few times, but I don't think it really fits.
But I can't find any sites that give an explanation to it, not even when googling in Japanese.
Help please? Is my Google-fu too weak?
>>148427571
Stop reading translations.
For some reason, I feel like I've always been able to understand Japanese. It feels so natural now

>>148427610
I'm reading raw, I saw the translation of that word after googling for it. But as I said, I don't think it really fits and I don't really trust the source where I found it.
And I can't find any fucking other site with a definition or anything.
>>148427455
Aren't both A and B correct?

I thought it was A but the book said I'm wrong. If no one here knows I might have to go to/int/in order to track down a native.

Yeah, I see that it makes sense now. That question really tripped me up though.

>no context
Did you notice the moving pictures in front of your face and the sound effects blowing into your ear? That is your context. If there are still missing pieces you just have to act like a detective and concentrate on what you know and what you can find out
So while going through Kim's guide he links to some words, but its to the old WWWJDIC server and it doesn't have the stroke order/ definition/ or how to say it and I'm trying to figure out which one to use (as in the word child and small both can be こ, but have other pronunciations too) so I can add it to my mining deck that i just started. Can anyone help?
Here are the words, the ones in the kanji section.

>>148429693
Also what is your go to dictionary that you guys use?
>>148429693
>>148429736
I'm not too sure what you mean, but 子 and 小 both have more than one possible reading, and the Japanese language has tons of homophones, probably more than any other language. For dictionaries, use Jisho/Rikaisama until you can understand J-J dictionaries.
>>148429824
Basically what I mean is how do you decide what definition to use for your mining deck. Should I use the first one that pops up on Rikaisama and just auto import it?
Also the other reason was cuz I wanted the right word/ saying for that exercise. (As in the one he intended)

Just realized what I was trying to do, and I'm an idiot, I was trying to learn individual kanji, and that exercise says specifically:

not the guy you're talking to, but it depends on how you're setting your deck. if you use jisho, you can look for the "common word" and take it from there. you should probably study them in the context of a sentence or something. learning them all on their own is next to impossible.
also, the wwwjdic has a lot of extremely useful abbreviation. here's a list taken from jewpidia (click the [show] button): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDICT#Word_class_abbreviations
>>148432116
I don't set targets or force myself to do it (even if I do, it never sticks), I guess I'd rather attend an actual class where I'm put under pressure to keep up.
>>148432262
Yea that's the conclusion I came to here:
>>148432003
