It's still a sad series, and it has a pretty good message and some interesting characters. Just because not all of the characters have depression doesn't mean they're lighthearted shonen protags. Asuka was loud, sure, but she had just as shitty a life as everyone else.

A big part of evangelion was how characters coped with their internal struggles, and asukas way of doing that was by taking it out on everyone else and trying to make herself out to be more important than anyone else.

Shinji is depressed and afraid, so he runs away, or just doesn't care about life at all.

Rei is unsure of who she is, so she doesn't try to figure out who anyone else is.

Asuka is insecure and has an inferiority complex, so she acts with an attitude as if she is overly superior.

Misato has daddy issues, so she relies on men for emotional dependency, even if that man is only a boy.

So on and so forth, you get the point. There is more to evangelion than meets the eye, but not in a cryptic way, rather more like how a person may act a certain way while meaning another, and that meaning is apparent when you look past their words and see what they really are doing.
