Easy to understand plot + low IQ viewers

Goku eating a lot food and being dumb.
The perverted jokes.
Doesn't get more latino than that.
As for z its trash.
Dragonball>the rest
>>
>>148359413
Constant exposure via reruns and basically no local competition. Same reason why a lot of old ass shit is still popular down there.

they can, they're just too lazy to dub it. I don't blame them, why go through that entire process when the same shit is still popular

DBZ was successful everywhere you mouthbreathing retard.

The real question is why Saint Seiya was exclusively popular in Latin America.

I think part of the reason was that the English dub was utter shit.

Cringe warning:

>>148359413
Basically better voices and original soundtrack. US either had Bruce Faulconer shit or even dumber shit like blue popo or "send you to another dimension" instead of "killing".

Saint Seiya exclusively popular in Latin America? Are you fucking retarded? It was huge in France, Spain and Italy as well, and in some Asian countries, of course.
In USA it was shown many years later than it should've, massacred by censorship, dumbed down for kids and with horrible voice acting.

Also, the fanbase in USA started later than in other countries. By the time Saint Seiya and DBZ came to many other countries there were already an established fanbase due to Go Nagai works, Heidi, Candy Candy, Harlock and a few others.

>The real question is why Saint Seiya was exclusively popular in Latin America.

Because they censored the shit out of a series that was chiefly about gratuitous violence and shitloads of blood leading to cathartic turnabouts. Softening the violence off Saint Seiya takes away all the appeal. Just ask Omega's ratings.

It was the only decent cartoon airing on tv at the time. No competition means every kid is watching it. It also air on broadcast channels so you didn't need cable to enjoy uncensored DBZ. You just needed to jerry rig a couple wire hangers, put it on your roof and plug it into a tv, and bam, DBZ.

>>148359818
Welp to be fair, the attempt at an uncut dub wasn't much better, sure it had a faithful script, but it was done by who else, the Texans, back when it showed that they weren't trying with the voices, sure the Dic dub was a gag dub, but i bet those actors if given the more accurate scripts, they would sound amazing

Plus the ADV dub was cancelled, but at least lasted longer then 4kids attempts at the uncut Yu-Gi-Oh dub which was sabotaged on purpose seems.

http://www.otakudub.tv/watch/saint-seiya-episode-3-english-dub/
>>
>>148365249
The voice acting was great. The translation was shit. The Spain version was better translated, but acted like shit.
>>
>>148367284
Here's one episode of the uncut dub of yu-gi-oh.

http://www.otakudub.tv/watch/yu-gi-oh-duel-monsters-episode-9-english-dub/

Sorry if i sound picky, but, even when teh scripts were accurate this time, the delivery is still terrible, plus the same doofy voice choices for the characters, they still sound the same.

Its almost as if they wanted people to prefer their take on the script instead.

It's anime, anime is popular in mexico and south america.
>>
Because Mexico was already proficient in dubs because of stuff like Mazinger Z and Sandy Belle in the 80s while America heavily localized/edited their programs. Lip sync is better there too because of all the dubbing they do.

Not to mention the fact that the transition from Japanese names to Spanish isn't as painful as it is to English, "Karatotto" sounds so much cooler than "Kakarot".

Also, no Faulconshit

Yeah, the ones I listed were the only ones exposed
Otherwise, you could say that DBZ was shown EVERYWHERE compared to everything else so that's what also led to its massive popularity

Hue version was the best.

Makankosappo was Makankosappo, not Special Beam Canon
Tenshinhan was Tenshinhan, not Tien
Kuririn was Kuririn, not Krillin
>>
>>148369173
>>148369460
My bad, I mixed things up. I thought I was replying to a Saint Seiya comment. I meant that the translation in Spain of Saint Seiya is good.

The Mexican version of DBZ, on the other hand, might be one of the best dubs in the whole world. Voice acting is perfect, translation is perfect, they even respected the soundtrack. They did an awesome job.
>>
>>148369531

Fucking THIS.

But in the LatAm dub only Krillin was Krillin as well, guess that's the propper translation?

But makes you think that they have to simplify a lot of shit for Americans, huh?

>HOME FOR INFINITE LOSERS
>>
>>148369420

I think it was the other way around.

So odd, the countries where SS aired during it's prime became big fans, France and most Latin America, SPECIALLY Brazil.

Guess it was a bit too Classic Standard Shonen by the time it got to the US.
>>
>>148369153
But they're the most appropiate for neutral spanish, Locomotion did all their traductions there

Another relevant question is why was Dragon Ball Z first dubbed in Spain and French before the US and other important countries?

I know there was a plan to make a DB dub in the 80s which would have fucking been horrible, but it wasn't made.
>>
>>148369531
I mostly agree, I mean, Saiyajin is Saiyajin and not Saiyan which is good. But then we had Namekuseijin instead of Namekian which was just awkward to say.
>>
>>148369420
Most of hispanic countries are christian, calling the warriors "santos" didnt fly, so they went with Caballeros.

By the time SS was popular enough to air it un the USA, half the world already was using a variation of "knights of the zodiac" as the franchise's localized name.

Compared to what, exactly? Spanish is my second language and I regularly speak to Latin Americans for my job and it's safe to say that Mexican dialects are far easier to understand than any Salvi, Dominican, Colombian, Nicaraguan, Chilean, or Cuban I've ever spoken to.

Castilian spanish is fucking awful too. I'm glad they're breathing new life into the internet porn industry but hearing "s" pronounced like an English "th" is super fucking grating.

In my case:
Action movies where big in The 90's. Specially kung fu movies.
Dragón ball was The only good animation about kung fu.
Dragón ball was big in México. Unlike in América, where it began with dbz.
We followed dbz because it was a continuation of db. And it was a full action and more mature than db. It was like we were maturing with goku. In my case I was a teen where I watched dbz.

Wrong. It was first aired in France (1988) with the title Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque. Then it was spread to other Latin Europe countries (Italy and Spain) with the same name, translated for each country. By the time it arrived to Latin America there was already merchandising existent with the brand "Los Caballeros del Zodíaco", since Bandai had a subsidiary in Spain. And that's the reason why they kept that name instead of using the Japanese name when it was dubbed in Mexico (1992), because they were already selling action figures and cloths with that brand in Europe. The opening they used in Mexico was the same one from Spain (which already was all about "Caballeros del Zodíaco"), and that was itself an adaptation of the French opening, "Chevaliers du Zodiaque", sung by Bernard Minet, who did a lot of openings for French airings of anime (I believe that most of them weren't faithful to the original song, as it happened with Saint Seiya).
