The reason for this is SAO being shit, but I’m feeling generous and I’ll explain to you why it is shit.

The original web novel jumped from the “We’re trapped in a MMORPG” chapter, to the part where Kirito and Asuna have dinner, fuck and marry 2 years later, to the final boss battle. That’s all.
Of course, the author decided this wasn’t shit writing enough, so he published a second volume composed of side stories about Kirito getting harem members, the Yui thing, etc. That’s why everything feels disconnected.

Sadly, yes. All interesting conflicts, navigating a game world, and even the goal of escaping just take a back seat to empty drama surrounding characters no one has any reason to care about. And then, the whole second season is more of that.

Literally prepare for the MC to spend about half of the remaining episodes pretending to be a father and husband and playing house instead of doing anything interesting at all.

Most of SOA is a story with characters completely independent of the setting, like it was an accident the author used an interesting plot at the beginning and then went on to do something else entirely.

People don't like it because it's popular. People like to say its because it's garbage, but it honestly isn't as bad as most people like to say it is. In terms of visuals and music alone it surpasses most anime. The story? Well, it's certainly not the most original concept, but what it excels at is the execution of this story. The 'forced drama' is honestly handled better than most anime are, which is mediocre/average at best. Its no storytelling marvel, but its certainly not the boogeyman /a/ believes it to be. As for the romance? Back in its time, it was one of the only anime to actually go out of its way to have the MC CHOOSE a girl. And better yet, only about halfway into the original story. The romance between them is handled well when it focuses on them. The whole 'harem' thing is a meme really, since the other girls are all friend-zoned at that point. So, all in all? Its something that got popular, then was made into a scapegoat to hate so that people could feel they fit in. Its ironic, since the original reason was to seperate from normalfags, yet now all the normalfags hate it without even having watched it/undrstanding.

Tough question. It has good story, game mechanics and characters but animation is mediocre and pacing is reeeeally slow. It's like, they could put 3 episodes in one and it would still be okay. And because of that slow pacing the story ends on the most interesting part, that made me mad even more. Two whole fucking seasons and they left everyone hanging. Really reminds me of Legend of legendary heroes.

If the 'game reality' is what you care about the most? Probably. I'd suggest finishing the first SAO arc at least since I did like the game reality stuff. I think my favorite episodes were where they just hung around on that lower level floor and talked to the old fishing dude.

LH has more game focused stuff and whatnot. Still has a gary stu protag, but now there's an annoying tank dude who isn't funny. It beats SAO in the aspect that it has Akatsuki though. Asuna is low tier waifu. Also, SAO has that really crucial selling point of a 'conclusion.' LH won't give you that. Finish SAO1, move on to LH.
