I watched Koji Morimoto's part of 9 Love Stories, Hero.
Dunno if I agree with ANN's writer that it belongs in a pile of shame for being a collection of love stories about briefly appearing characters you don't have time to connect with.
The MCs in Hero didn't get together because they minded other people too much which was okay, but lol at I broke up with my gf just now because I met you again and I guess I can leave my fiancé then.
>>
I recently started watching Saber Marionette J, and it started better than expected. Great animation, and great fun. But when the other girls were introduced its quality fell. Only seen 8 episodes, and the last one was pretty good, so I think this can be some great, empty entertainment for when I take the train, where the distractions would detract from true masterpieces.

Started watching it for the artstyle, and the character design is great, just like I expected.

Besides that, I haven't seen anything pre-2000 in a while. Been stuck on Now and Then Here and There for a while, seen 9 episodes and need to finish the last ones.

Finished Lodoss War TV a few weeks ago, and if you can accept it, finally got back to watching Eureka Seven, after a long break due to the cringe, and it's not as bad anymore.
>>
I'm currently working my way through Revolutionary Girl Utena and loving every minute of it. Even the episode where Nanami turned into a cow.

Justin's "pile of shame" was always a misnomer because apparently only he and Zac are the only people in the world who use that phrase instead of "backlog". It was supposed to be "shameful" that he had a "pile" of stuff he hadn't gotten to yet.

Continuing my Gundam marathon. I am enjoying ZZ way way more than I thought I would considering constant criticism surrounding its shift towards cheesy humor. Honestly, I don't think shift is drastic, original Gundam wasn't entirely humorless as well and in ZZ it never gets in the way of angsty moments, and it does have angsty moments you could see in Zeta like Cecilia's two-parter (which is actually just re-used Mahiru plot from original Gundam with slight changes).

But anyway, Judau seems based and less autistic than Kamille which I like, in fact, new cast is pretty all right aside from Mondo and Beecha. My favorite part is how Axis when captured Judau's sister started educating her and buying dresses, and when Chara got captured by Argama they started using her as a dishwasher. I find it funny for some reason.

And Cello convinced me that Haman-sama is in fact best girl in the universe

>>
>>148346846
Honestly, it starts very rough. They try to make it kiddier, and the original stories aren't exatcly the funniest either. However, if you manage to tough out the first episodes, you'll be completely hooked. The difference between the first 50 or so episodes and the next 50 is astronomical (though the latter still has its moments).
>>

Struggling to finish Zeta Gundam. I think I'm gonna take several month-long hiatus from anything with robutts after that. Perhaps a life-long hiatus. Guess mecha is just not for me. Or is it Tomino's writing? At this point I find virtually all the characters retarded and annoying. Honestly, sometimes it feels like this was written by an alien

Did anybody here watch Touch?

I never see any discussion, and it greatly upsets me. It is much better than Kimagure or Maison Ikkoku that are always discussed in those threads. No filler or misunderstandings, lovable and realistic characters, beautiful direction, humour is on point. Most of all it has this sense of comfyness that is hard to put into words.

I watched it and really liked it. I think its main flaws are how Minami and Tatsuya just meander and take ages to get together. Not really, no. The trends its artstyle follows are mostly just CLAMP ones, unless you want to argue that having 2D mecha makes it retro (which would be kind of silly while a 2D mecha is airing right now).

>it is lacking quite a bit
I mean, yes, but no one's going to make a chart that includes every single good anime made in a 40-year period (that's assuming we cut out pre-60s stuff because almost no one cares). You couldn't even get a consensus on that if you tried. That chart has a fairly agreeable selection of 100 anime from 30 years, that's the best you're really going to get.
>>
>>148350891
I can only speak for 3000 leagues - it had okay Hongkong English.
>>
>>148350963
the OP and ED are really fucking good. The series itself feels really lacking, like they didn't really know what they were doing.

I've been told it deviates quite heavily from the manga, which might explain it.
>>
>>148350937
Was gonna bring this up. Was made in the pre-2000s anime threads a few years ago.

If you are thinking about the popular ones, the idea was to recommend stuff people hadn't already seen, to show people new stuff instead of things everyone already seen taking up space.
On the other hand, including anime people have seen and liked may legitimize the chart a bit, they may take it more seriously.

I think charts are great fun to make, and would love to see it being made in a thread. It's a great way to discuss many different anime and bringing them up. Even if this chart already exists, I think it's great fun just to make the charts, worth it by itself if anyone is willing to put it together. (Also, 1000s of free karma on Reddit)

Omits as much as you'd expect when you take a 113-odd episode TV series and condense it down into a movie.

Not only that but the movie isn't as focused as 999 is on doing 999 things, other leijiverse actors come into play: especially Harlock.

GE999 is really about the journey. Watch the movie trilogy after the TV series.

TV series retells the second half of the OVAs with worse art and animation.
The second half is slightly better, even though it has a new cast but still not good.
In the end, the only things good about the TV series are its god-tier OP and the omake shorts at the end of each episode dubbed.

Well, in 2006-2007, the encoder was kinda new and generic. Then sometimes in 2008 he discarded all old encodes and started doing pretty good encodes from R2J dvds and without the shitty filtering everybody used then. It was the best you could get then, and those usually stayed the best available encodes after that.

If you sort the release list on anidb by "first episode released", then the good run starts on 06.08.2008 with Demon City Shinjuku.
https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=group&gid=3809

Since, bitrates got bigger, x264 better, but that encoder kinda "saved old anime" back then, I'd say.

Flash is okay. Great character design from Takahiro Kimura, same guy who did Code Gayass.
Their chemistry from the original is gone and all they do is bicker. Might have been better if it wasn't Dirty Pair. But then people would have said it was a ripoff.

Universe(the TV series) is a decent place to start.
Then the OVAs cover the same material, sometimes better, sometimes not. I say Universe because the exposition is spread out more, rather than in concentrated info dumps the OVAs have to resort to to keep the plot punchy.
The third OVA is hot garbage. Skip it like a flat stone.
The spin-offs, movies, and whatnot can be watched in any order, and are of varying degrees of quality.
Photon was one of the better ones.
>>

>>
>>148363916

>>148363747
That's the easy answer, but the exposition is pretty clunky in the OVAs, especially the reveal about Yosho.
>>
>>148364178
And? That is the true nature of the franchise. Also OVA has smashing animation that is available on blurays: Tenchi is to a large degree build on visuals and style, so watching the TV series old and busted craprips of R1 DVDs sucks. Or did Universe get bluray yet?

Anyway, watching remakes first for whatever reason sounds fundamentally wrong.

Been reading Mars to figure out where Lord Alberto from Giant Robo came from originally

He barely did anything, had no shockwave powers, and now he's dead

Still having fun with it. The fact that the hero can't sacrifice himself makes for some interesting drama--it's absolutely imperitive that he survives, even at the expense of others, which isn't the usual dynamic.

I can relate with you. I have a problem with mechas, real robot and Tomino writing I guess.

I know this is a retro thread but if you haven't tried you should watch Bokurano, Evangelion and some other robot shows that are less "real", but still not "super" to the point of being simple GAR show.

And maybe you should try super robots too like Gurren Lagann or Getter Robo, they have a different feeling, funnier, if you happen to like bloodboiling shounen like Ippo it might fit your tastes.

But yeah I can get how "industrialized robot wars" with characters written by Tomino are a pain to follow. Though I don't like Macross (first series) much either, and the old robot OVAs that are trying to fit in 6 episodes like Gunbuster generally disappoint me too.

All of this seems to be such a waste of good concepts and potential.

I know that, and I don't really see the contradiction. The fact that he thought that having them fight the evil Koyemshi to save the last kid and destroy Zearth (not to mention throwing in those random alien things just because) was somehow a better idea, and that the kids' facing inevitable death wasn't the entire driving force of the story, means he somehow didn't get it. Or else he got it and thought that ruining that was a good idea as long as it was happier, but that's just as bad. And if I remember correctly, didn't his letter mention something about Kitoh having to explicitly bar him from using magic to save all the kids or something like that?

I've seen some bad spanish soap operas out of boredom and when getting through RoV the constant melodrama and same old story beats were reminding me of them. Romance was pretty basic and history aspect was weak so that's a bit of a bummer.

It's more about expressive and realistic motions than about being constantly on-model.

Notice how there's a lot of little movements that are superfluous but add a sense of realism?
Like at one point Sybil is scampering away from F6, and she trips on Ferris's legs. It doesn't serve any purpose story-wise, it's just for one second, but they took the time to animate it (and even to show Feris's legs being pushed away a little), which gives the chase scene more realism and more urgency.
Also there's a real sense of momentum and mechanical precision in the way the M-66 girls move.

Exactly my thoughts. Also I was expecting a bit more of Dezaki's directing, I sure like it but the "acting" is so Japanese (overdone) that it also fits with bad spanish soaps from a few decades ago.

I can see where you're coming from. The melodrama in the first half irritated me, the way I saw it though was a good portrayal of the aristocracy being out of touch with the whole country surrounding them. And the fact that they never did much of anything to change anything when it was laid out in front of them.
I can definitely see the similarities though.

I absolutely love RoV for a few reasons:
1- It's not exactly accurate, but it follows history closely in a detailed fashion. We get to witness romanticized versions of events and affairs that really happened.
2- This blend of historical drama and romance gives it a varied plot. You can't really say it's 100% soap opera.
3- The characters are well executed. I love how Oscar, a character that could've easily been a huge Mary Sue ended up being so good. I will never forget the one time she was almost beaten to within an inch of her life by an angry mob. Can't say the characters were realistic, but Ikeda really didn't take the fantasy to the extreme.
4- This is a bit of a spoiler, but it's a perfectly executed tragedy. I went into the show knowing it was a tragedy, but it still hit me hard. It sets up a bittersweet ending but then surprises you in the most painful way possible.

Not him, but I think VOTOMS is amazing, mostly because of its worldbuilding. It focuses on characters much later and the first parts of it do a very thorough job establishing just how fucking shit the known universe has become because of constant warfare and what exactly continued warfare with future weapons has done the planets economies and ecosystems. And it does so without lengthy exposition by stern faced men, speaking as if the fate of the world hinges on their every word. It kind of hits the shitter after the jungle arc though, but everything before it is gold. Even after it, there are good parts, but everything past Kummen is a step down in quality. And the spinoffs are just fanservice for people that want to see more of the same, only Mellowlink deviates from that but it is not exactly a profound experience. Just an action flick.

No, they were ugly, and they got prety good later.
They were so ugly that the anime producers made their own - and better - cloths.

I don't know if Kurumada didn't know how to draw them or if he made it on purpose.

Look at the 4th Dragon cloth. The shield is in a perfect place. In the first one, you can't even see it.

Watch both, watch the OVA first.

The first part of the TV series is weird because it retells and expands the Shooting Star part of the OVA with some changes. The quality of that part is a bit all over the place, but Ashram is a fantastic antagonist and it has a great conclusion.

The second part focuses on a new party, and I thought that it was great. Spark's party has more character, he himself has a much better character arc than Parn's general blandness, and whlie the animation fluctuates wildly, it tends to have better action in general.

The party has better interactions, more character and development, better banter, an incredibly based dwarf, and a much more engaging and dynamic plot. I found the OVA to be really boring, as well.

I don't know why it's regarded so poorly.

It has various kinks that I really like (may favourite anime), but it really depends. The animation is not as stable as later OVAs, the setting and story would be better with some extending/changes. People tend to whine that the main character cries a lot after she gets traumatised in the first episode. And so on. I'D say watch it first (japanese blurays came out, although they haven't been pirated yet).
