Just finished this. Did i like it?
You thought the art and animation was nice, but felt like the direction was lacking, you proceeded to learn who directed the show only to realize it was a first time director, you also noticed the awful curriculum of the scriptwriter. That's when it hit you, this show is nothing but fluff and will amount to nothing else. You will probably keep watching it for the animation, though.
>>148339180
>please tell me what to think
Okay. It's awesome, possible AOTS.
>>148339427
I don't think the writer has ever had series composition duties on an original from what I can see so really it's hard to draw anything from that. If you drew the conclusion it would be nothing but fluff though you obviously weren't paying close attention. Tons of hints at an intricate plot to come in that first episode the OP and PVs.
>>148340061
>Tons of hints at an intricate plot to come in that first episode the OP and PVs.
This show actually reminds me of Trigger or late Gainax shows that have a lot of style but the substance is all over the place, making it difficult to discern the plot, which usually is very basic anyway.
>>148340270
The actual plot of the first episode was simple and easy to follow. They just left a lot of the setting and mechanics of the world unexplained leaving a lot of open questions. It wasn't all over the place but deliberate.
>>148339427
I don't like the way you think. You sound too full of yourself.
more like Clit Lappers
>>148339427
Direction wasn't lacking and the script was good.
Why the fuck did people like this show so much?
It was so boring.
Papika's crotch in full view.
>>148340554
>calls flifla boring while posting hibikek
Obvious bait.
>>148340554
Boring how?
>>148339180
You liked the animation, but some of the character designs were a bit odd to you. You did feel it had potential, though, but are planning to shitpost regardless.
>>148340651
Nothing was happening.
>>148339427
The direction wasn't lacking at all, the biggest problem with the first episode was the lack of explaining of what's going on, but that's likely going to happen in later episodes so that's a non-argument. If it doesn't happen then yeah that's a huge negative mark but it's too early to say.
>>148340554
how the fuck is an action show boring but forced drama: the anime is?
>>148340708
But like, that's not true.
>>148340734
Watch it again, there's a lot that's explained but requires closer attention to pick up on. I actually think this style of storytelling is much better than any alternative.
>>148340708
Are you sure we're talking about the same anime?
>>148340821
>there's a lot that's explained but requires closer attention to pick up on
For example?
>>148339427
>you need to look at the creator's curriculum to form an opinion about a work of his
Sounds unbiased.
>>148340847
The nature of Papika's relationship to the professor escaped me on my first watch, for example. From a single obscured frame and a "you're alive!" we know that they've been bringing girls in only to have them die on entry to Pure Illusion. Maybe other people caught these things but it's a fast moving show. I think anything that needs explaining at this point has pretty much been explained, you just gotta pay attention to what's actually shown / said.
Web gen animation disgusts me, nothing looks finished, everything is flat and dull.
>>148341164
oldfags must go
Why is nobody concerned about OP being from the future?
You can see Cocona's camisole in the poster.
This is the Munto of our generation.
>>148341849
It isn't even similar to Munto besides the fact that it probably wont sell well.
How did you finish this? Only the first episode is out.
You won't trick me, time traveler.
im a few minutes into the episode right now, should I continue, /a/?
>OP release 3.11
I CANT TAKE IT
>>148342283
Yes. It's the Space Dandy of animation.
>>148341566
I haven't looked at this poster closely before, but now it's clear that the background changes from school to some sort of tonnel/tower with gems. Maybe when they were in a dark tunnel, that's what it really looked like. It seemed that the surface was reflective when they walked through it.

80% of the OP is in gloomy gray or sunset red. I don't think it'll be a Madoka-style "everything is a lie" grimdark story but I'm sure it'll have its bleak moments.
>>148343067
Most of the episode has this feel of isolation and gloom. Only that Papika bitch stands out, and the hectic control room with whoever are her superiors.
>>148340577

>>148345158

>2ch
>>148345158
From what I can tell its mostly the same reaction as here. Some people like it, some people saying it is animation just for the sake of animation and the action doesn't serve the story, some people saying they have no idea what is going on, some people saying they like the fairy tale element but can see it will turn dark, people mentioning Gainax, Ghibli, Birdy, Kyousougiga, Jinrui and so on. People saying it will flop.
>>148345213
Evangelion was pretty average up until the climax, though. End of Eva was what made everyone ask what was going on.
>>148344918
I think the problem with the first episode was how convoluted it was, or at least it felt like that when I first watched it, rewatching it again everything comes together nicely, but too much goes on in the span of just 20 minutes.
>>148345191
For once i feel smart. This makes me happy.

>>148352244
>>148340061
>>148340390
It's about the relationship between the stoic and practical outlook of Cocona -- caged by the burden of reality, vs the cheery carefree outlook of Papika -- seemingly free or ignorant of real life burdens, but also guinea-pig/slave to some other organization.
Cocona is strong for others when they need her. Papika is constantly reminding her to have fun and forget her troubles. They work together to solve problems on adventures in pure illusion, like "Finding the dropped glasses". That goal got progressively harder the closer they got to solving it, but in the end, Papika's drive led to their retrieval with Cocona there to salvage everything in an instant. I believe this is reflected in real life in how she manages other lives through text messages and is always looking to concentrate.
Some of my immediate thoughts on the matter. They may be a little over the place.
>>148352244

The chart in the PV said Papi sukiskuidaisuki's Cocona. The website chart says she suskisuki's Cocona. The pre-screening impressions say the conflict with Cocona/Papika/Yayaka plays out like a love triangle. Story composition is done by a huge yurifag.
It's not hard to understand.
>>148352647
They certainly made sure to make the contrast between the personalities super evident in the direction and visual too. The slow paced, dull, depressing Cocona beginning. The explosion of colours and energy when Papika appears. There is a lot going on in the show I think, a lot more than just, "here are some characters as an excuse for animation" like some people seem to think.
>>148352897
Oh wow totally didn't catch that
Time to put on my het goggles then
>>148352647
As to the question
>What is Pure Illusion?
It looks like a dream world which serves as reality's "funhouse mirror". Considering the Glasses returned to Cocona in a broken state, I can say for sure that it has real consequences even if some rules can be bent.
Cocona mentioned Lucid Dreaming. I imagine we will see her take more control or breaking more "rules" in future episodes. Like the path of the One in The Matrix.
>>148352244
Is this the person who did the interview someone posted in a previous thread? Because the interview gave me the impression they considered most kinds of female relationships yuri, even close friendship.
>>148353009

So putting a character in totally unconvincing mortal peril in the first episode and a convenient power up resolving this non-conflict is good writing and directing? Hmm, okay then.

Considering some people claim to have not been able to follow the plot at all I would say you might be giving others too much credit.
The ED was really good and it had a lot of fun moments. The only problem is that it looks like rather than actual development between papika and coco, its just going to be twelve episodes of yuri-bait were they never become great bros and never become lovers. Since when was discussion and asking questions such a bad thing? >>148355349
Oh man it sure is terrible that people "waste /a/'s time" by generating original content on a board that is nearly devoid of it.
Why does the fact that a person compiled screenshots with very basic context frustrate you so much?

These type of speculation shows are very easy to make, just slap some visual and historical allegories that foreshadow themes or future events. It's only pretentious because some people think these type of shows are somehow more intelligent and often brag about their superior tastes on 4chan, but aside from that, it's a fun way to entertain autists like us. >>148355832

>>148355794
There were plenty of subtle things that are easy to miss if you aren't paying attention but it is pretty hard to speculate too much based off of anything we have seen so far as there really isn't much to go on around it.
I find the idea that pure illusion is some warped reflection of reality somehow linked to dreams quite interesting and there are bits and pieces pointing to that being the case. The trams and clock tower buried in the snow, Cocona mentioning lucid dreams, the part in the OP where Cocona is sitting on the chair looking normal and the reflected her grows a mass of hair. Especially since the stuff that happens in pure illusion has been demonstrated to effect reality. That with the mention of lucid dreaming suggests that possibly with the "treasure" that makes dreams come true you could manipulate the dream reality in Pure Illusion to radically alter the real world and perhaps that is the end goal of the two organisations we have seen so far.
>>148354576

I did mention that a few threads ago (granted, I only found it based on reading Japanese tweets).
>Rating not even a cover mention, the first installment of Jones' most popular creation, "The Jameson Satellite", appeared in the July 1931 issue of Amazing Stories. The hero was Professor Jameson, the last Earthman, who became immortal through the science of the Zoromes. Jameson was obsessed with the idea of perfectly preserving his body after death and succeeded by having it launched into space in a small capsule. Jameson's body survived for 40,000,000 years, where it was found orbiting a dead planet Earth by a passing Zorome exploration ship. The Zoromes, or machine men as they sometimes called themselves, were cyborgs. They came from a race of biological beings who had achieved immortality by transferring their brains to machine bodies.

This might have been overlooked, but on the official site, in the introduction setting the first phrase is the following, in big letters:
>あなたには、世界はどう見えているんだろう
"How does this world looks to you, I wonder?"
As you may have noticed, there are a lot of imagery that can be seen in two different ways. Pure Illusion is seeing the real world in a different way. Perhaps the things in Pure Illusion, like Oums, are also something that exists in real world. Something to think about.

>>148364204
I did.
Here's my analysis/speculation of what I think is happening.
I can supply the original .png (with layers) if someone wants to change/modify what I wrote if they don't agree/want to add things.
>>148379347
While there are plenty of references to illusions, the actual illusion created by this episode lies in this image since it's only on the second viewing that you realise you are looking at hundreds of hibernating slug-monsters.
When the girls first notice the "frosted trees" Papika calls them "Obake"
>Obake (お化け ?) and bakemono (化け物 ?) are a class of yōkai, preternatural creatures in Japanese folklore. Literally, the terms mean a thing that changes, referring to a state of transformation or shapeshifting.
Which is pretty close to what they actually were and yet another reference to illusions.
It's also how the producers executed this concept: >>148374371 as Papika saw a world that was much closer to its reality while Cocona saw the illusion.
The huge differences in their Cocona and Papika's personalities increases the chance that one or the other will see through an illusion which might make them better suited to exploring the worlds of Pure Illusion then the twins, for example, who are more likely to either both see through an illusion or both be fooled.
Of course, our heroines can only leverage that advantage if they learn to communicate well and trust each other.

I just used Fireworks because Fireworks is optimized for making images to be posted solely online. Indesign has a really general interface that can be used for all sorts of publishing, but Firework's workspace, ui, and shortcuts were all made with web publishing in mind. So a lot of tools and (such as a specific web layer) are readily available. Is Papika from New Jersey?
>>148388827
No, but she's a fairy.
>>148389051
Close enough. When's the yosakoi start?
Pretty nice POV here, even Coco's hair can be seen.
>>148389129
>you'll never look down and see this
>>148389051
The characters designs were specially designed this way so that when QUALITY hits the fan, it wouldn't be as noticeable.
>>148389051
>dude let me in
>I'm your manic fairy dream girl!
>>148389129
>so flat she can't even see her own chest

>>148380497
>this long-ass plot synopsis
Why.
>>148380456
>Jap hacks put out a shitty nonsensical show
>autists study and overanalyse it
Like clockwork
>>148389273
A picture is worth a thousand words and Flip Flap has a fucking ton of them.
>>148382531
>>148380456
>>148380497
I thought /a/ hated reviews. This isn't a speculah image at all, you're just blatantly reviewing the show.
>>148389273
It would probably be faster to just watch the episode a second time than read that garbage.
By the way, could this be another illusion? Like, it's not Papika upside down but an old man peeking on some schoolgirl ass. My drawing sucks, but something like this.
>girl is bored
>girl uses a pipe then goes to a magical world
It's about weed
>>148389525
So is Super Mario Bros.
>>148387930
Forest Fairy won? hahaha oh wow. Care to tell the details?
>>148389437
I'm choosing to believe it was made ironically.
>>148389574>>>/u/2154850
>>148389517
You're dumb.
>>148380456
>>148380497
You sure did write an awful lot. It's nice but I think it does get bogged down too much in explaining every detail rather than pulling together specific details in order to attempt to draw conclusions from those details.
This doesn't make any sense to me, it's just a random collection of things happening.
>>148390145
Try a second watch, things start to click a bit better.

>>>/2ch/

Some organisation/cult from another world was kidnapping girls to be Papika's partner, so they would gather those shining stones. Papika ran away to search for people to recruit, as her previous partner went out of comission.
>>148390701
I just hope that it'll be more like an adventure, instead of magical shoujo with a grimdark twist.
>>148390780
There was a dead magical girl candidate within the first two minutes of the episode starting. The idea that it is a fun adventure is just an illusion.
>>148390701
So basically: /u/ the organisation.
>>148390908
I don't think /u/ would let cute magical girls die like that.
>>148390957
>die
Maybe they run out of whatever energy they use to recover those stones.
>>148391094
Nope.
>>148390701
>Some organisation/cult from another world was kidnapping girls to be Papika's partner,
We don't know that. Given that the one scientists insist searching on foot is too slow, and we don't know Papika's age, its likely that they custom make waifus to reach PI.
>>148390957
They love their lesbian drama. It's all cute and fluffly with them until they start saying things like "I want Boochi to gain a lesbian harem and have orgies". Purest form of love? pffft.
http://www.animatetimes.com/news/details.php?id=1476035127
"かわいい世界とか怖い世界とか、ピュアイリュージョンで行く世界の印象が毎回がらりと変わるので、とても楽しいです。"
Is MAO confirming that Pure Illusion changes everytime in this interview?
>>148391223
Isn't that kinda obvious? The same winter world would be boring every time.
>>148391223
PV already confirmed that. They'll be in some Easter themed land in the second episode and in a desert world later. Also Papika reacts "oh it's a white world now" IIRC.
>>148391223
Yep. She said "Pure Illusion changes every time. Some times it is a cute and cheerful world but other times it can be a terrifyingly dark world."
>>148391223
PI looks different in the next episode preview. We don't even need the seiyuu to confirm that shit.
>>148391223
>Pure Illusion can be a cute world but also a dark and scare world.
HAPPENING
>>148391199
Lesbian harems and orgies are not drama and they're still yuri, I think. Girls being dead and not being able to dyke it out is not yuri.
>>148391360
>not flappening
One job anon.
>tfw Kokona's world is just another PI
>She'll disappear when it does
>Takahashi Minami: It may seem like a cute and cheerful anime at first but it has elements of reality. While there are funny lighthearted parts it also has a serious story, drama that stings in your heart and hair-raising moments.
/a/ REDEEMED
>>148391374
I've seen yuri dinosaurs, yuri manhjong, yuri bears, yuri vampires, yuri ghosts, yuri bunnies, lesborgs but no yuri zombies yet. Hurry up with that, japan.
>>148391461
I can't imagine cute zombies.
>>148391292
and in this one what exactly is she saying about Pure Illusion?
――おそらく視聴者が一番戸惑っているであろう“ピュアイリュージョン”を、今の時点でわかりやすく説明するとどうなりますか?
高橋:異世界。現実世界ではない場所。夢のある場所。
>Papika may seem a bit pushy and she may do bad things at times but she doesn't do it out of malice!
>>148391551
>inb4 MISUNDERSTANDINGS
Cocona's VA favorite character is Yayaka. NTR!
>>148391515
She just said that it's a different world, as if it was the world of dreams.
>>148390486
This. The first ep, and probably the whole series, is designed to reward rewatches.
>The story becomes more fun with each passing episode but it also gains more and more depth!
/a/ SPECULA REDEEMED
The show can be read as a love-love story as Cocona slowly opens her heart not just to Cocona but to the world. Yayaka is a very important key character, pay attention to her. The twins are cute but also messed up.
>>148391627
She's just saying that because Yaya will suffer the most.
>>148391627
Does the interviewer also say that the viewers might be confused/frustrated by the first episode but that they should give it to the third episode?
>>148391627
>Sakurako kimino's favorite was Tamao
It all comes together. Also mfw she was responsible for Love live.
>>148391627
>>148391748
Yaya seems like the most realistic depiction of an actual teenage girl with attitude problems in the series so far. No surprise that the VAs would relate.
>>148391798
>viewers might be confused/frustrated by the first episode
I think you've fallen for some of the oldest bait in the book anon.
>>148391685
>speculah
Eh, you'll know it'll have a good ending.
>>148391744
>Cocona slowly opens her heart not just to Cocona
So now that the VAs confirmed that the show will get more serious and emotional and Pure Illusion can actually be a dark place are you more excited for future episodes, /a/?
>>148391798
The VAs said to keep watching up to episode 3 because it will make you keep watching episode 4 and then episode 4 will make you keep watching episode 5 and so on.
>>148391872
I'm literally trying to read what the interviewer is saying in the interview.
>>148391837
>Sakurako kimino's favorite was Tamao
RIP Yayafags.
>Papika doesn't know how human society works
>cuddles next to Cocona to sleep
>Grandma goes to wake her up as usual
>has a heart attack
>>148391992
>prepares red bean rice.
>>148391922
I think that much was expected but it is always interesting to get these takes on things. I really wish more people would translate this kind of stuff to be honest. It is part of the reason I am trying to learn so I can read interviews with the people working on shows rather than relying on third hand information. I feel like a lot of misinformation is probably passed around the western anime community due to this lack of translations.
Didn't they mention something about a huge sakuga fight and a good cliff hanger in the third episode?
>>148392167
Episode 3 is also the debut of the magical girl forms.
>>148391922
I basically accepted that Flip Flap is going to ruin Christmas back before the 1st episode even aired.
Who cares what the VAs have to say?
>>148392294
I guess it's going to be the desert episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXbSjAsVF6E
>>148392349

>tfw you liked what it was and now everyone is saying there is going to be dramatic change
LET'S
>>148392576
FLIP
>>148392596
FLAPPING
>>148392480
>mfw didn't notice the dark scenes in PV back when it was released.
The one at 0:19 is definitely some horror shit.
>>148392526
I don't think it's going to be dramatic. They already showed blood, brains, creepy dreams and presumed death. Also the OP is pretty dark before they meet up and the ED is showing Grimm's fairy tale.
So it's probably going to be whimsical, colorful and ultimately cheerful but a bit unnerving on the side.
>>148392707
Shakycam says PoV flashback to me.
>>148392707
Did you see Cocona being possessed by that creepy looking helmet?
>>148392795
>possessed
It could be a fake coconuts
>>148392875
That's even more disturbing.
>>148392795
Watch is on the wrong hand and she doesn't wear garters.
>>148392875
>multiple Coconas
>>148392905
Those aren't garters, just a skirt shadow and watch changes hands even in the first episode. Same boots too.
>>148392897
Not as disturbing as that girl being real, and girl we've seen so far being the fake coconuts
Is this going to make me cry?
>>148393111
maybe
>>148393004
what if coconut was a coma and it was all a dream
I think dream girl is just Cocona.
>>148392480
>>148392294
It must be noted for the record that their weapons are scissors and fists.
>>148393196
WHat if Paprika was her Otherself? Like in BRS.
>>148393252
I'm still going with Cocona is some reincarnated god of PI
>>148393407

Fists that cast projectiles.
>>148393494
