It was so fucking boring and unfunny.
I forced myself to sit through 80 episodes and I just couldn't handle it anymore. Became the first anime I've ever dropped.

The jokes were ok the first 10 episodes, but they became so repetitive you could predict every single one. This kills the comedy.
Same thing with the serious arcs. They follow the same pattern over and over again.

His arc is funny, i like the kagura and sougo scenes and the toilet episode, but comparing with the other characters, she barely have participation in the arcs (Turtle, obi nii-sama and genderbent is the only that she is the main character), for example the shisengumi have various arc of participation, Tsuki have a least 3 arc (Houzen, the spider guy and the shige uncle arc), the ninjas have 1 arc, but is one of the most important for the plot,

Gintama humour is not easly understood by the western audience which is why many people fail to see the humour and quickly dissmiss it as shit. When i first watched gintama it had its moments but wasnt super funny. Years later when i decided to rewatch gintama i found it hilarious and was wondering why it was more funny second time then i realized i had lurked more and was more accustomed to the japanese culture and humour. Basicly alot of the parodys and jokes are ment for japanese audience. But the great thing about gintama is the good balance between serious arc and humour arcs. Not mention Sorachi-sensei executes drama and action scene perfectly.

Indeed alot of translator notes, but pausing to read the TN's ruined the momentum of the jokes and tryng to read the TNs without pausing makes you miss some important points because of focus shift and not being able to understand japanese language fluently.

Not all random per se, but there are filler episodes and other joke arcs that are fairly random with their own charm. But there is a continues story and it developes with both jokes and drama as well as the character development. Most gintamafags would agree that gintama fillers are pretty funny and worth watching and as another anon in the thread mentioned it might be hard to get into it, but past episode 25 it gets pretty good and there are some really good dramatic arcs to look forward to.
