Stain is pretty honest with himself all things considered- he's just nuts.

His inner beliefs are consistent with his actions- he has a VERY specific definition of what makes a hero; people who meet it get spared, those who don't get their spines carved out.

He holds back fighting Deku and saves him in the end because he thinks he has the makings of a hero- he tries to kill Iida because he doesn't.

Basically- even if the traitor is method-acting he probably wouldn't been thinking too over-fondly of everyone unless they're actually somewhat insane and a VERY high-level sociopath to the point they can legit like everyone and do stuff because they care about them until it's time to flip the traitor switch and start cutting throats.

5 was the culmination of trying to shoehorn an overarching plot connecting nearly a dozen games over which half weren't written with the intent of being part of a gigantic overarching plot.

It is very Lucas-like in that nothing is ever allowed to be a coincidence for some reason.

For example- in Star Wars did you know that Lucas' intent was that the one soldier who decided not to blow up the escape pod with C3PO and R2D2 was actually a rebel plant? I have to say my favorite thing about this story is how likable All Might is, he could have turned out just really corny (and I guess he kind of is, but in a likable way) but he's just such an endearing character somehow. They really nailed that kind of Harry/Dumbledore relationship with him and Deku. Also, it's corny, he kind of fills you with the hope that he inspires in the characters, it's impossible not to root for him.

I'm actually really bummed that he can't transform anymore, it's just not going to be the same. Obviously this had to happen eventually but I almost agree with All For One that he should have died in the battle. It's a bummer to just watch him waste away now.

Prime example happened last chapter.

Ochako tries to use her quirk to lift the rubble, which by all means she can do easily and with no hassle. However as Momo pointed out that potentially cause problems and injure the victims.

Hell you could say the same for Deku in an actual villain attack during the camp. He beat the muscle fibres guy but in a state if that if he had backup, Deku's victory would have meant nothing.

Shit like that is what's being tested here, being good with your quirk isn't enough to be a Hero. Other's lives depend on your ability to make correct choices and handle yourself well.

It might just be because their relationship reminds me of Harry/Dumbledore so much, but I think it's so he can have a very pathetic death way down the line, like how Dumbledore got cheapshotted while poisoned and weak. Something to really break Deku's spirits at a critical moment the story.
