Flip flappers is the only show that seems non-shit this season. I'm also following wixoss because it's hilarious to watch, but aside from that, I don't see anything improving from my first impression. In the first place, it feels like the only 3 "real" shows this season are flip flappers, wixoss and izetta, and izetta looks like it'll be really shit. Everything else seem like quick cash-ins and shoestring-budget-yet-safe garbage.

I don't agree because the very setting of izetta already feels stale despite only one episode having aired, and the overuse of CG and complete lack of interesting art makes it uninteresting to watch.

As for flip flappers, I think that it will be made or broken based on how the random v.s. serious aspects are balanced. So far (especially with how the episode ended), I think it has got the balance right. I don't think the show would be good if it devolved into generic powerlevel bullshit, but I also agree that it would not work if it turned into SoL + alternate world.

But that's not just with regard to original anime, and several anime originals do not have that issue.
With regard to non-anime-original titles, which are always designed to sell the original work, there are basically two approaches which are taken: either make the show actually good, or make it as full of holes as possible while maintaining the base idea, so as to entice people who could be interested in the source material to go buy it.
The latter kind is an example of not designing the anime for an audience (in that case it is designed for the source material).

What I am saying is that if anime is not original the intent behind making it is always an abstract goal and that this kind of abstract goal is often the case with an original too. So basically if you are being strict about it an adaptation in anime can never be designed to watched and neither will many originals which will have cute characters designs made that way to sell merch and so on.

If you say there are there are two approaches which can be taken with the adaptations though, make the show actually good or make it full of holes, then Hibike! I would argue definitely falls into that category of trying to actually make it a good show. They consistently make anime original parts in various episodes of that show to keep it in line with what they are going for rather than caring about the source which indicates an intention greater than the source.

That will likely never be explained and is completely unimportant.

That hasn't been explained yet, Cocona speculated that it was some kind of parallel dimension. All we really know is there is a treasure there that can grant wishes and that things that happen there effect the normal world too (Cocona's glasses were still broken)

Based on the implications in the first episode I would speculate that she is in some way specially predisposed to become the magical girl and that the emotional distress of seeing Papika get fucked over trying to help her out triggered the transformation.

Rakugo was a brilliantly written and executed drama, with some of the best cinematography and editing I've seen in anime in years. Its pacing might've been too slow for some, but I think slogging through the downtime is worth it for the best bits. Despite being informed that it was going to happen from the beginning, there was such a build up and climactic atmosphere to Sukeroku's death that it both made me despair and grin. And that last scene with Kikuhiko breaking down at his grave was powerful as fuck. Can't wait for S2.
The finale to Durarara was the best the series has been since its very start, and was very satisfying. It actually made me glad to have followed the series for 6 whole years.
Konosuba was a brilliant isekai parody and comedy in its own right.

Rakugo was decent, don't get me wrong, but it was a pretty standard period piece a bit over reliant on clichés to drive the narrative. I'd hardly say brilliantly written, although I can't praise it enough for nailing some of the actual rakugo scenes; "shinigami" for example was chilling. I wouldn't say its cinematography or editing was particularly above the usual competent anime either. I was very excited going into it but overall I was a bit let down. Might've gotten my expectations up too high.
