I use to be like you, I was strongmindedly against /DJT/ existing on /a/ because it had nothing to do with anime, or even really japanese learning anymore.

Then I settled down and realized it's not that bad and I was just being autistic.

+++ATTENTION+++

I don't really know anything about coding, but I tried my hand at fixing that shitty, modified version of Kanji Grid on AnkiWeb where the JLPT sorting is broken and the font is fucked up in the saved PNGs. I've been using it for a week now and it seems to work fine.

Changes from modified version are:
>Made links go to jisho.org/
>Changed font to IPA Mincho
>Fixed "JLPT Order" sorting and renamed it to "Education Order"
>Changed heading titles for "Education Order" to match school years
>Made "Education Order" sorting the default
>Made selection per deck again

See pic related for what it looks like (left - education order, right - order found).

Should I upload it? If so, should I change the font to something people are more likely to have, or should I just leave a link to the font in the add-on description? If I should change the font, what should I change it to? Also, what should I name it? I thought of calling it "Kanji Grid - DJT Edition", but I don't want to attract undesirables to these threads by doing so.
>>
>>148291719
Yes, please do.
>>
>>148291719
>>148291829
Also, obviously don't name it DJT Edition.
>>
>>148291719
Oh, and regarding the font, I think I could probably just leave it undefined and let people's computers decide what to font to display instead. Is that preferable?

>>148291829
What are your thoughts on the font and name?

>>148291875
Yeah, I figured it was probably a bad idea to do that. I thought about it a bit more and I guess I could call it "Kanji Grid, Jisho ver.". How does that sound?
>>
>>148291211
Oh, it's Mr. Hyde's turn, huh?
>>
>>148291907
The two posts above you are both me.
>What are your thoughts on the font and name?
I mostly use Meiryo, but the font in your image looks great too. Probably best to leave it undefined, I guess. Jisho version sounds good.
Also,
>>Made selection per deck again
Is possible to select all decks? I'm doing Core6k and a mining deck simultaneously, so I'd like to be able to create a kanji grid from my whole collection.

>Is possible to select all decks? I'm doing Core6k and a mining deck simultaneously, so I'd like to be able to create a kanji grid from my whole collection.
No. Again, I know jack shit about coding. I only managed to get it per-deck again with a lot of trial and error (commenting out lines and uncommenting lines, then trying it out and seeing if it worked).

I could maybe redownload the original "Kanji Grid (modified)" add-on and reimplement the above changes while keeping the selection global though, and upload that as a separate addon.
>>
>>148292040
Oh, also, I just tried leaving the font undefined and it ends up using a really shit one, whereas the original, unmodified version would use your system font. I might have to see if I can figure out how to fix that.

Hello, anon here. A couple of days ago i asked some question and arrived at the conclusion i was following the wrong entry level intructions. I want to ask the following questions:

- How much time does it take to go through the grammar book?

- Do people actually learn new vocab with anki at the same time they learn grammar?

- Is it a good idea to start with kanji early too?

Thanks.
>>
>>148292793
>- How much time does it take to go through the grammar book?
About 2 weeks, depends on you.
>- Do people actually learn new vocab with anki at the same time they learn grammar?
Yeah.
>- Is it a good idea to start with kanji early too?
There is no set order for studying grammar, vocab and kanji (kanji =/= vocab). They should be done more or less simultaneously. Whether you want to learn kanji from vocab or study them individually is up to you, read the part of the guide that goes over the pros and cons of each method and decide for yourself.
>>
>>148292793
> Do people actually learn new vocab with anki at the same time they learn grammar?
The only reason not to learn (basic) vocab BEFORE grammar is that it's easier to spread your time among different things than it is to do vocab anki for 2 hours a day.

Other than that, it is much easier to read grammar guides if you already know almost every word that they use in all their examples (probably 1k vocab is enough for this)
>>

たね is an N2 word?

>>
>>148292661
I was just about to make a post announcing my intention to do this.

Here it is:
http://pastebin.com/xCG06x6c

And here's the modified version that it's based on, in case you want to compare the two:
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/942570791

Just a heads up to whoever looks over this. The version this was based on had a line which read
>gc = 0
but while trying to get the selection back to per deck instead of global again, I had to change this line to
>gc = 1
otherwise I was getting an error telling me that I was trying to divide by zero. I have no idea what this line does, so it might be worth someone looking over it and making sure that I didn't inadvertently introduce some security exploit.

The other changes I made should be easy to find just by CTRL+F'ing for stuff like "[Jouyou Kanji]", "IPA" and "jisho". There are no other major changes besides making the deck selection per deck again, IIRC.

Not a security exploit, but the fact that it was divided by zero is indicative of some deeper bug. Look at the "x of x - %" text in >>148291719

>delete the contents of the file

>save the file

>>148293591
On that note, if you look at the "Education Order" sorting in the image I posted and go all the way to the bottom, you will notice that "Hyougai Kanji" says "0 of 2137", but there are actually only 2136 cards in the deck. I'm guessing this might be related. Hopefully it gives you a clue anyway.

Reading a bunch of grammar up front is a waste of time, it won't stick until you practice it with real content. Learning new vocab through Anki is ok, you won't internalize the meaning until you see it in context, but it helps to have the reading down. You should start with kanji right after katakana which comes right after hiragana. Start reading right away.

I'm not the "developer" of Kanji Grid, but I'm the guy who modified it into the version that was in this thread.

If you want to change it, open the python file in Notepad or whatever (documents > anki > addons > Kanji_grid_modified.py), then change the
>_pattern = "kanji"
line to
>_pattern = "vocabulary-kanji"

You can also change the default text by editing this line:
field.setPlaceholderText("e.g. \"kanji\" or \"sentence-kanji\" (default: \"kanji\")")

First thing to try would be changing

The reason why you shouldn't do RTK is because you'll end up relying on seeing all the radicals instead of just visually knowing. Reading pic related by dissecting each kanji logically is slow and difficult. You need to be able know what a kanji is visually without the radicals.

I did all of Tae Kim and RTK and I'm in the midst of core10k (finished core2k & 6k).

Reading manga these days, I'm able to read 2 volumes a day for now, it's fun. I hope to be able to enjoy LNs in 6 months - 1 year from. I should probably force myself to read VNs but I'm having fun with manga for now so I don't want to fix what's not broken, yet.

How did it go for you? What stuff did you read first, etc.

I started with manga after I finished Core2k and VNs after 6k (with ITH). I remember reading a bunch of Ika Musume chapters at the very beginning. Then Madoka volumes when I was between 6k and 10k. And Steins;Gate when I was at 10k+
I started LNs a bit before I passed N2, it was difficult due to the amount of vocab and slang needed. Surprisingly I found my first regular novel, 容疑者Xの献身, to be an easier read.

I currently have my Anki deck set to showing kanji with furigana above it and I've noticed that some words I recognize easily by kanji, but would have trouble knowing the word if I saw it written in kana, while other words I can easily recognize by kana/hearing, but wouldn't recognize if I saw only the kanji.

Is this normal for everyone else? I was thinking of setting up a second Anki deck with the same vocabulary but set to only show kanji/kana, or will it just happen with time that I memorize both naturally?
>>
>>148301603
>showing kanji with furigana above it
That's the source of both of your problems, get rid of furigana on your main deck.

That's nonsense. With enough experience you will be able to recognise words and even whole phrases by shape and other shortcuts. Being able to recognise the kanji individually doesn't prevent that, so why should knowing the radicals stop you doing it with a kanji?

Is doing a rote kanji deck + the dojg deck + core2k a bit too optimistic?

Also, regarding the DoJG deck, how exactly are the cards in the deck ordered? And is there any consensus on cloze vs recognition? I'm leaning towards recognition since I'm not sure whether treating the DoJG deck as though it were a test is a good idea; I feel like it might be a better to just use it as a means of making my way through all the material while reviewing it at gradually increasing intervals.

I already know some vocab. I finished Core2K a long time ago during an earlier attempt at learning moon, and as I've been going through this deck words have been coming back to me.

I was moving at a pretty good pace and was due to finish in ~two months (which is about how long you'd expect the mnemonic approach to take), but I recently hit a wall with it and haven't gotten anywhere in a few days. That's why I was thinking about doing one or both of those others decks as well, so I could at least be moving forward in some aspect of the language.

>>148303670
>I also suggest you skip torturing yourself with a rote kanji deck if at all possible.
I don't really know what to do instead. I tried getting by without deliberate kanji study in the above mentioned earlier attempt, but it caused a lot of problems for me like difficulty recognising and remembering words, and difficulty reading handwritten text. I tried the mnemonic approach but I got bored very quickly of spending an hour a day trying to think up stupid stories for the characters I was learning. I've gotten further through rote without giving up than I got through the mnemonic approach.
>>
>>148304029
>I finished Core2K a long time ago
Then just start reading and mining.
All your problems with recognizing words stem from not enough exposure and a kanji deck won't solve much of that.

If you're the anon from before, you didn't want to use pre-made mnemonics because you didn't like them. But you don't need to like mnemonic for them to work. You can just pick the top-voted koohii mnemonic no matter how dumb it is and it'll be effective. It worked for everyone else, it'll probably work for you too. You could even keep doing your rote shit and look up mnemonics for difficult ones on koohii or KKLC, just make a rule not to get autistic about perfecting it.

Thoughts on RTK? I just finished learning kana yesterday and I'm still undecided on what to do from here.
>>
>>148309627

100 percent worth it. I used to struggle with identifying words I had already learned because maybe the font was slightly different, or the shapes of the kanji looked kinda similar to the shapes of another word. I spent a bit over 2 months burning through RTK at 44 words a day (some days I slacked), and kanji feels like a joke to me now. It is literally no longer something I worry about. I also learned how to write and stroke order during the process, which just makes me feel a lot more confident in actually knowing the full language, not just reading.

Learn some vocab and grammar first though. Start reading immediately. RTK is not a fun way to start learning Japanese, and I enjoyed reaching certain kanji that I recognizes from words I already knew. When you start finding it difficult to recognize words because you're mixing up kanji then start RTK or something equivalent. It's a pain in the ass, but I don't regret it at all.

It's pretty trivial to edit the Kanji Grid addon's python file to make the changes that I did. I managed to do it successfully with no knowledge of coding beyond a little bit of HTML and CSS in school 8 or so years ago.

Look in the pastebin I posted, then CTRL+F for the bits you want to change. Want to change the links to Jisho.org? CTRL+F for "jisho" in the pastebin, look what line I changed, find that line in your Kanji Grid python file and then just change it how I did.

You don't really need to know what you're doing since you're only changing totally superficial elements of the script. Hopefully someone who knows what they're doing will take a look at the pastebin though and improve on it (maybe make it so that you can choose between per deck and global) and post the result on AnkiWeb.

Ah, gotcha.
I just did a mock-up deck containing only the 教育漢字 and ran it through the modified kanji grid, the one which this one >>148291719 is apparently based off and had no issues with the sorting in this regard. Pic related is a screencap of the HTML print out in the browser. What issues was the JLPT/Education Order" having?

Aside from that, I think it isn't a very wise idea to have a custom font like IPA Mincho as the default font. Making people install custom fonts instead of relying on the already present system fonts, like Meiryo, is putting up unnecessary barriers to entry. I can understand to an extent the font issue anons where having with the screenshot feature but this is already made redundant by the ability to save as html, where anons can simply open the file up in their browser, with whatever fonts they have as their preferred Japanese fonts for reading, and take a screencap of that since most browsers come with built in full page screenshot functionality out of the box.
Doing those sort of things is more like the author injecting their own opinions into the product for the sake of usability. An appropriate solution to such a perceived issue would be to allow the user to select the output font instead of telling them to install a custom font into their system just to use an Anki plugin. But I suppose those are more philosophical points of disagreement than anything else.

is using literally no kanji a common thing in comedy manga like Yotsuba or is it just Yotsuba's schtick

Isn't it just because Yotsuba is a child?
The rest of the characters lines have kanji as usual.

Only the first few chapters out of the entire series has Yotuba using kanji, occasionally. The rest is entirely in kana. Japanese has this trend of writing child characters with kana dialogue because they oft association all kana with children.

>An appropriate solution to such a perceived issue would be to allow the user to select the output font instead of telling them to install a custom font into their system just to use an Anki plugin.
This is a good idea, assuming it's actually possible.

Also, the problem with depending on "system fonts" is that they differ from OS to OS. For instance, the Meiryo font you suggested isn't available on Linux (at least not legally) and I would presume it isn't available on OS X either.

Using google translate to accurately get even a really rough idea of what a sentence means is a skill unto itself. You examine the sentence grammatically, then translate the sentence piece by piece, then arrange the results for the individual pieces in a way that makes sense and corresponds to how they grammatical relate to one another in the original sentence. You can learn a (very) little bit of Japanese just by doing that.

The japanese have the lowest rate of english understanding in asia.

You have to remember that 99% of people a japanese person meets is another japanese person. 0.8% of that remaining one percent are korean and chinese descendents who haven't gotten their citizenship but have never actually been outside the islands. Only a tiny fraction of anybody they'll ever meet does not have a perfect handle on the japanese language and all its bullshit.

>What's the point of learning Japanese if all Japanese already learned English in school
The number of Japs who know English at a fluent level is a fraction of a percent. You might find 1% who can roughly communicate ideas if they gesture a lot and you ignore all the grammar errors. For the rest, they'll be able to roughly pronounce various words like "Japan", "cool" and "peace", but a sentence with more than 1 word will be complete gibberish.

I just really got sick of Anki. I feel like I wanted more time studying words, not just watching them fly by on a screen. I'm keeping paper-based word lists in a yellow legal pad, and working through them using a few techniques. First, I'm writing the words down a few times to ensure I have the kanji down. Second, I'm using them in sentences and looking up words I don't know how to use at yourei.jp, through Google, or in 大辞林. Lastly, I'm using a technique I picked up from another learner, and taking the individual kanji in a word and trying to write as many related words using the same kanji as I can remember.

It's pretty cool how 綾乃's pun was made up by 藤田咲, her voice actor for the anime adaptation.

Why do so many people fail JLPT tests? It's like 2 out of 3 for most levels, and a good chunk of successful examinees is barely above the cut-off. Are they registering for exams they are obviously unprepared for? Trying to punch way above their weight? Like what the hell?

Weebs are already delusional, and your standard 3 year college course isn't even close to preparing someone for N3.

They assume that the thousands of dollars they've wasted should have prepared them for N2, and then their dreams come tumbling down.

So I'm curious, what method did you guys go with?

These are taken from the guide, but if you did it another way, if possible, go, ahead and share.

http //www strawpoll me/11393581

I'm currently going with the with vocab route, but not sure if its a good one.
>>
>>148326942
Rather than overestimating their current ability, I think a lot of people overestimate how much progress they'll make between signing up and taking the exam. You'll usually sign up a few months in advance, so it makes sense to try to aim a little higher than what you know you can currently do, but you can easily shoot yourself in the foot if you don't account for how much you'll be slacking until the examination date.
>>
>>148327311
Reminds me of how universities are free in my country and how I passed N2 after my 3 year course.

>>148327437
You can link directly to strawpoll btw

What's sad is that you could have passed N1 in the same time frame if you just stayed at home, so I don't see how this is meant to be impressive.
>>
>>148327437
Also is anyone advanced enough to say the the vocab route is ok to go with? I don't want to start on it, and then realize when I get far in I'm fucked.

>>
>>148327437
If you want the advantages of the vocab route but you're not sure if you have the mental strength to just jump straight into it, do the radical approach. It only takes a week or so to get all the radicals in your head, and knowing that shit gives you so many more options
>>
>>148327604
The vocab route is the best, unless you care about handwriting it's the fastest and the most effective method for learning Japanese

So I guess I just answered my own question, haha. Also thanks for the info.

Still interesting tho to see what peeps went with so I guess that's another plus out of this.

A'ight, also downloaded that one as potential early practice material, will see if it's a bit easier.

I mean don't expect to understand everything at this point, like I said this is still the very early stages (got around 2k words down so thought it a good time to try reading) but I guess I still underestimated just how much help I'd need. Hopefully pick up a fair bit of words as I go or something.
>>
>>148329822
Mine every word you can't read to ensure that sort of thing happens less as you progress.
You'll be cracking those eroge like peanuts after about a year of constant pain and suffering, which is a cheap price if you ask me.
>>
>>148329673
The best screenshots are the ones that you can immediately understand without any context, so usually some piece of self-standing dialogue. But when you actually start up the game, you're usually met with an image of the sky, with narration that tries to build up the setting from scratch. Obviously narration is harder to read since it's more dense, and while you're not exactly lacking context, it's kinda being built as you go along. So quite often the introduction is the biggest hurdle you have to overcome.
>>
>>148330088
At the moment words I don't know occur multiple times in most line, I think that would be counter-productive. Pretty much fresh out of Core2k at the moment, I think I'll wait until I finish 6k before I get into mining like that, since it will probably add a lot of the words I am missing right now anyway.
>>
Should I try to "sound out" the kanji in my head when I'm reading early on, or should I just focus on the meanings of the words and not the pronunciations?
>>
>>148330147
Mining 4k random words from a VN would better prepare you to read VNs than finishing 6k.
>>
>>148330194
What? You obviously need both reading and meaning to read stuff.
>>
>>148330147
Core6k really isn't worth prioritizing over mining. Mining will help you so much more, and it's much more motivating to read when you're learning directly from your material instead of praying that the words core6k throws at you will be the words you're struggling with while reading.
>>
>>148328034
The way I see it, the "radical" way is just a small add-on to learning through vocab, in order to make it more digestible. If you're planning to write, memorizing stroke order in the radicals rather than through whole kanji will probably be easier too.
>>
Do you guys study every waking hour? Or do you take time to do other stuff like shower/eat/etc?

Never again.

>>
>>148330194
Pay as much attention to the sound as you can, that is the most important part. The sound is what we call "the actual fucking word". Everything else is ancillary, even kanji. If you have to confirm to yourself that you know the meaning, think of the context and see if you understand what's going on, or visualise what it is in your head. If you have to resort to an english "meaning", make it as verbose as possible so it won't take the word's place. The last thing you want is to make a habit of thinking in english when you see kanji on a page.

No of course not, that's counterproductive. If you force yourself to do superhuman amounts of studying every single day you're going to have major retention problems. You'll end up having to go back and re-learn things that you thought you already knew. I do a healthy 1-2 hours of studying every day. You could get away with 3 but I wouldn't recommend any more.

You can edit the card type, it's kinda like HTML

I'm using the 2K/6K Deck and you've got per-defined sections.
You simply remove the "kana" part from the Front Side of the card. It'll apply it to all cards in the deck.
