Idol anime typically feature the pursuit of dreams, love of singing or dancing, rivals and competition, overcoming obstacles, and self-improvement. They may also feature cute girls doing cute things, but in essence they're closer to sports anime, just more marketable and more colorful.

Idol anime is vapid, soulless and horrendously shallow and usually replaces the comfy with melodrama. Idols is cute girls anguishing over the most inane, inconsequential bullshit and invariably played completely straight.
