that's more accurate. The message of 'life is nice but sometimes it's hard but overall it great' is a dime a dozen and not that notable. Altough subtle I think the distinction with Eva's message is important. I once read an article about how japanese fairy tales tend to have dark endings as opposed to western ones. And I think Anno himself once said something along the lines that kids should experience tragedy early on.

So it's not a message you see in many other places of 'life will turn out fine, don't worry about it'. but a message of 'who knows you might get fucked anyway despite your best efforts, but you don't know if you don't try'.

Their goal wasn't the same, Gendo wanted to bring Yui back to life (he kind of wanted the alt universe ending you see in the tv ending) Seele were a death cult that wanted to fuse all human consciousness. They both wanted to start instrumentality, but for very different means.

These all connect so I'll give a single answer

Adam & Lillith were members of the first ancestral race, they were meant to colonize the universe but they somehow both ended on the same planet, which is a problem because they carried incompatible seeds of their race, those were the moons found in antarctica and japan. From Adam's seed came the angels. From lilith's seed came humanity. You could say that both Angels and Humans are grandchildren of the First Ancestral Race. Rei was created from lilith and Kaworu was created from adam, they have their souls so in a sense they are them, though because of Eva's take on identity they become something else than Adam and Lillith, they became themselves.
