Reposting because new thread: I'm going to a book store tomorrow to pick up the last three omnibus of One Piece and vol 5-15 of Urusei Yatsura, they're 100円 each so it's worth just grabbing them before someone else.

I've been reading Touch, JoJo, and City Hunter otherwise, but I could really use another series which has furigana yet isn't aimed solely at children (OP is about as low as I want to sink).

Any recs from other self-assessed N3's?

The few random helpful anons tend to go unnoticed, the the anons maintaining the op stuff or like the anon who went and proof edited the dictionary of Japanese grammar stuff and posted it a few threads ago. Anon who are doing stuff like that are improving the overall quality of what these threads are build around but they're kind of doing it in the background. Which is refreshing because they could easily be donning trips and all that sort of shit which usually happens in other generals.
All it takes is a few loud and obnoxious anons to ruin individual threads but there is some peace of mind knowing that despite this, things keep getting better little by little.
Kind of like a group of kids nicking spare cinder blocks from a construction site which doesn't really have an noticeable impact on the construction process.

That was a troll taking advantage of the situation. The anon explained what happened with the mega stuff which was the target of someone mass reporting and probably the same person who was flooding the threads. But I guess that goes to show that people focus on sensationalism more than accuracy. Either way, this is beginning to get even more off topic from what should have been a simple point.

Yes, and it was music. It was really only uploaded as a temporary thing and not exactly obscured and so I wasn't entirely surprised it was flagged and removed.
As long as you change your IP and aren't using an exotic browser/OS, they don't really have a reliable means of spotting someone uploading things from the same machine using different accounts. It might be different if you use that new desktop client they have but I don't think you have to use it to upload things.

When you see なり used on its own like this, I suppose it's just なる in the 連用形 to connect the clause to the rest of the sentence?
I'm also guessing that this has an old-fashioned sound to it? How would this be expressed in a modern context?
Would something like 見ること be used, or just 見ると?

Yeah. I tried mnemonics before doing this and they worked well enough, but it was just such a time-consuming method. I had to devote way too much time to thinking up mnemonics of my own because the ones in RTK are totally worthless and I didn't like most of the ones I found on koohii either.

I'm reaching the 1000 mark by rote so it's a bit late to turn back and start doing mnemonics again now anyway.

Nah, I buy "omnibus" editions (総集編) so they're at least 400-1000 page long manga; the first part of One Piece is 20 volumes, JoJo Parts 1-3 are 8, HxH comes out to 11 books and the entire Dragonball saga is 7, etc. Still quiet cheap, especially if you consider the average book in America is $10.

>>148246947
The Urusei Yatsura manga isn't for children; as for City Hunter and JoJo, they may have been published in Jump, but that was back when restrictions were lax and you could see violence and sex on tv. Japan really soft-censored itself since then. It's normal for college kids to buy Jump, and things like Crayon Shin-Chan are considered for men.

I believe it's a way to keep the Japanese language pure and "free from foreign influence", in a sense, by highlighting words of foreign origin
But a bad one at it, I'd say, considering the fact that Japanese has been completely compromised by chinese characters and plenty of vocabulary. Not to mention Japanese words being written in katakana, which is becoming more and more common.

An old friend of mine said she has a Japanese roomate who would be glad to do some basic lessons with me.

Is it worth it, or is the 'talk to someone who speaks the language" just a meme?
>>
>>148277264
Only way to find out is to try. I imagine it differs considerably by person.

Although DJT regularly likes to remind us that being able to speak != being able to teach. So you may get more value out of just talking as opposed to doing their "lessons".

Does anyone here already know a second language or wants to do one after Japanese?

Honestly, there were a bunch of languages (notably Italian and German) that I wanted to do, but I chose Japanese first because I had the most immersion in it, and wanted the challenge, especially since I predicted that future languages. Would learning the methods to pick up Nihongo make future language acquisition much easier?

They probably got that word from the Germanic sphere.

It's called "Schwerkraft" in German, which 1:1 translates to 重力.
There is also the term "Gravitation" that English-speakers probably learn first, although technically Schwerkraft is the result of Gravitation.
I don't know how to make that distinction in English.

Reddit is too gentle, someone coming from there and adopting their view would be the kind of person who studies for years and doesn't get anywhere. You have so many people advocating college courses, people rationalizing wasted time, etc. It's an extremely toxic community for someone who wants to seriously study Japanese, and this is largely in part to the voting and superficial attitudes that lead to people coddling the failures who are lazy at studying.

I don't know, 800mg is an exaggeration, but I exclusively use caffeine pills to study, and it definitely helps a lot with focus and retention. I usually take 2 200mg pills daily. Then again, I don't drink coffee or tea, so that's my only source of caffeine. Maybe I'll have to get some meth somewhere down the line.

I do 20 from Core6k and 20 from my mining deck. It depends on how much you're able to retain and how long you're willing to spend on Anki, but I would recommend starting at 20 or 30 and increasing or decreasing the number depending on your retention. Just don't get too carried away and add too many cards in the beginning, because the first cards are the easiest and there's a high chance of burning out if you try to do like 100 cards a day.

>>
>>148284231
As far as Core goes, 20 a day is fine to start with. Once you've finished a basic grammar resource (TK, presumably), then you can increase it to 30 - 40. The vocab beyond the first 600 or so in the Core (basically stuff not used in your grammar resource/textbook) is just going to be useless and rapidly forgotten information until you start reading and actually see them in context and more often than a few times a month.
>>
>>148284231

There's a 99% chance they were joking. That would amount to about 3 hours of Anki per day.
Just remember that reading is more important than grinding vocab, and you should start reading some easy material as soon as possible (anywhere between 1000 and 2000 words, I'd say, depending on how much you're willing to look up, but you'll need a dictionary either way.)

In most cases I already know how the individual kanji reads from different compounds, so I just put them together and see if it comes out in the IME. Sometimes I also recognize the radicals, I didn't study them per se, but at this point it's impossible to not notice some.

In rare cases where I can't just see the reading or it's something irregular, I draw the kanji here http://kanji.sljfaq.org/

I use it when seeing an unknown/unfamiliar word, or when the voicing go at sanic speed/is slurred.

Is that a good use of text hooks, autists-sensei ?

Did you try scrolling over 貿易会社? It will highlight the entire word even if it's not in the Japanesse dictionary. There's no way to just highlight 貿易 for example.
>>
>>148287371
Oh, that

That's not because of dictionary priority; it's because the rikai dictionary is used as the word boundary parsing index

EPWING is formatted in a way that makes using it for that very difficult without pre-parsing the entire dictionary in memory. Also, most EPWING dictionaries, such as kenkyusha (the J-E one), have special formatting that puts compound words as a related term of an existing word instead of as an independent word.

You're literally responding to someone who has give non-answers to everything and is not trying to have a discussion. He's doing it on purpose yet you keep responding. You're fucking retarded.
>>
>>148287620
Depends, how low can I answer without you saying "I was actually ready for it by that point but didn't have time to take it :)"?
>>
>>148287631
Ironic shitposting isn't trolling, it's shitposting. The fact that he's doing it on purpose is only more reason to respond to him because lurkers will literally copy him otherwise.
>>
>>148287668
You remind me of those self-assessed N3-N2 people. In reality they're usually N4. I can only guess what you really are.

Okay, what does stuff like that have to do with the topic at hand?

Most people are only a few months in and still believe in the AJATT 'fluent in 500 days' meme.

These people have no idea how much effort it actually takes.

Early progress is not indicative of how it will be early on because common things take priority giving the illusion of fast progress for little effort.
>>
>>148287779
You sounds just as delusional as them.

You'll enjoy DJT a lot more if you just accept that anyone stupid enough to take stupid fake advice was gonna fuck up somehow anyway

he doesn't, he's looking up words he doesn't know how to say in japanese
>>
>>148288926
>誰に評価を求めようと自分の能力が変わらないからどうでもいいだろ
>それにアニメが分かるとかエロゲが読めるとかで充分自分の能力を評価できる
って綺麗さっぱりと自己満足という言葉に当てはまっている。

自分で勝手に選んだアニメやエロゲを読めるようになるのを能力の基準にしたら自己満足でなくてなんだろう

If you want to have a more permanent discord thing going on, set one up with permanent invites and post the details to the "join the wired" in the "thread webring" page linked on the djt neocities site.
http://djt.neocities.org/threads.html
>>
>>148290232
Please don't. The discords people post here are literally external circlejerks that don't have anything to do with djt, and usually die in a matter of days, just like two of the threads already on that webring.
>>
>>148290107
